Moot Hoot

Posted by Sarthi on in General blogging

You’re mesmerized by the seniors coming in your classroom and giving that powerful speech on the co-curricular events of law school. They familiarize with you with this activity which you dreamt since of doing since the day you started preparing for CLAT and were not sure if it actually even existed, hell, you weren’t even sure of its name! Yes, it’s what we know as-‘moot court’.

The whole setup is fictional, but for you, it’s the real thing. And those seniors, with their army cut, waist high jeans and Bata slippers looked like they ruled your college. They were in fact, ‘cool’. Whereas the guy sitting at the back bench whose cologne you could smell till the first bench was the loser. For once, THIS WAS YOUR MOMENT TO GLORY.

You join forces with the guy sitting next to you. You had already got a chance to acquaint with him earlier and you knew that this dude was amongst the top speakers from your class (he couldn’t stop babbling about his debate wins).

The first place to prove your locus standi was the college’s internal rounds. You had found an average third member. You preferred this guy research from home, or rather take a bath and come to the library. But not to worry, you are on a good track.

Moving on to the morning before the Internal Rounds, you just take a moment to think back to the last 3 weeks of your life. You slogged post-midnight in the library every day, you blew up your entire saving on photocopies, bindings, fancy stationary and this new tie you’re wearing today. There is nothing that could stop you now.

Entering the court hall you see your opposing team for the first time. Your stomach just did a cartwheel inside. When you spent the last 3 weeks in commentaries and reports, these girls spent their time at the parlour. You can’t help but wonder if one of them even got a expeditious enhancement surgery. And just when you start reassuring yourself by looking at your mammoth research in front of you, you see three old, overweight men enter the room and sit in Their Lordships chair.

Your most cherished thought which you formed since Mooting Day-I where you saw yourself three years down the line, walking to college, with the memorials after your second Jessup win on one and with Miss. Boobies who dumped cologne boy in the first year, in another— kaput.

Haha I appreciate your sense of humour. However what gets most to me is how people spend days and months researching on moots. I don't really think that much is required. Mooting is actually quite fun once you approach it with a lighter mindset. I speak from personal experience.

This whole mooting thing is little overrated. I agree with aforementioned comment.

Ha ha ha ha - "When you spent the last 3 weeks in commentaries and reports, these girls spent their time at the parlour." GOOD ONE!

On a separate note, good moots need hard work - don't approach them light-heartedly. They are not for fun, but for development. The fun is automatic if you are passionate, and so is the sucess rate.

hahaha...awesome bro. I swear I was going to write a piece on mooting and I shouldn't have read yours first. Now I will keep deleting things after writing cos they will be similar to yours.
Great post again, witty, short and sharp. Loved it.
