“Should you marry for love or for money?” This is a question which has elicited diverse answers from various people. Envying another’s wealth and trying to achieve the same status has always been a very natural psychological response for most people. And there are die-hard romantics who’d rather say that “love and fresh air” is sufficient for life. But what if we tweak the question a little? What if we ask these same romantics whether in their choice of career they would preserve their passion over a higher-paying job? We will find that the proportion further reduces. The strength required to pull through in interesting, and often less-established fields is sadly missing in most people. That is why while the number of people queuing up for the established “fat pay-check” jobs is increasing, lesser people are willing to step out of the line.

And hence we find students of NLUs mostly opting for desk jobs in law firms and opting for corporate law as their subject of specialization. Make no mistake, there are many of these students who are actually good and have a passion for this field. The problem lies with the “confused student” who doesn’t know what to opt for, and by default chooses this profession. Following a lead is not a bad idea. But destroying your time where you could have actually chased YOUR dreams instead of someone ELSE’s is a complete waste of a life. Your work may lift you and make you reach the zenith, or be a constant source of dissatisfaction- whatever you make of it.

I would suggest you try all possible options for internship in the first two years of your college life. NGOs, courts, practising advocates, different welfare organisations, and explore their pros and cons. Find out new fields of law that could build a new generation.

Most importantly, it is better to remain confused and take your time in deciding what you want to do than jumping to a wrong decision.
