GNLU- An Insider's opinion

Posted by Napster on in General blogging

So, you made it to Gujarat National Law University (GNLU) ? Or thinking of joining it next year ?

Well there are a lot of things (good/bad) that you might have heard about it. All the NLU’s have merits and demerits. All the non-NLU colleges will detest the NLU’s (generally) for one reason or the other and the NLU’s will always think that they are better, in more ways than one.

GNLU is no different. It will complete 7 years this July. It has definitely grown from strength to strength but has it grown enough ?

I will definitely not tell you the rank of GNLU amoung the NLUs. One very big reason for that is that I don’t know. :) It is different in all the surveys done. I guess GNLU usually lags behind in the ranking because 1) only two batches have passed out till now and so we don’t have a substantial support from them as of now. This will improve over the years. Drastically. 2) GNLU doesn’t have their own campus. The campus is under construction. According to the University reports next years CLAT batch will be able to study in the new campus right away.

College/hostel is far away from almost everything. Its in a corner of Gandhinagar. The place is far away from any kind of civilization. The curfew time is 9:30 pm but that doesn’t seem early as the entire city is closed by 10:00. Gandhinagar is the greenest capital in the country. Good road. Auto rickshaws are the only mode of transportation. 800 students staying together, no dearth of humans in the college campus itself.

The hostel is a decent place. Twin sharing rooms. I have been told that these are the best hostels amoung all NLUs. Pretty big rooms and decent facilities. Basic stuff is available right outside the hostel.

Closest place to hang out is Ahmedabad. It takes around 30-40 minutes and transportation is easily available. Gujarat is a dry state (Ha!). So the ‘fun places’ are sometimes not what everyone expects.

Gandhinagar has a Cafe Coffee day, U.S. Pizza and proper Punjabi, South Indian outlets. Veg- Non veg both are available. Cambay resort is the high end place. In short, food will generally not be a problem if you are cool with eating out. Mess sucks ! (almost everywhere).

Faculty, well that’s a tricky one. Some of them are exceptional, some are mediocre and the rest all plain stupid. Generally all of them will help when you meet them in person, except for a couple of them who are a pain in the donkey.

The opportunities are quite a few. Considering the fact that GNLu is getting a lot of support from the State Government and the High Court of Gujarat.

Placements have been good. Top 4 rankers got through Amarchand this time. I am not aware about other placement but I have heard that Pangea3, Khaitan, Wadhia Gandhy etc have also taken a lot of people. PSUs take a lot of people. Plus, Gnadhinagar has so many of them.

Gujarat is known for being safe for women. People here are way more helpful then in a lot of other states in India. (No Offense)

I want everyone to note that these are all my personal views. I have no intention of disrespecting anyone or any university. I also urge people to not argue about which college is the best as that kind of arguments never get to a conclusion. All universities are good in one way or the other.

I guess this is it. If you want to know more, just ask me through a comment. I would be happy to answer them.

Thanks

Keep Smiling. :)

Basic and very important question. What do people at GNLU do for liquor? Do enlighten us on the same.

@1- Very important question asked...i myself was about to ask phoenix this. Its hard for me to spend 5 days being 'dry' (and i am not the only one ;) ). Don't know how people will manage to abstain for five years.
And I feel you should have discussed the campus life at length. You just gave an introduction.

PS- I bet the magnificent "sutta", the sole recluse for most law students, rules there too?
napster 17 Jun 2010, 23:06
+0 -1
@1- Its manageable, if you know what I mean.
@2- A lot of people in the college do not stay dry even for one day. So I guess that answers all the questions relating to the 'dry state'. :D Sutta definitely rules. We have two designated places for it, the adda and the galla where everyone gets together.

I have not discussed campus life at length because it would become a very long post then. Also, I cannot include everything. I was bound to miss somethings. I guess I can answer all the campus life related questions through comments. :)

I must say I am not too surprised to see that when it comes to GNLU, the first thing that people ask is," How do you manage to get the booze?" :D

@4- I agree.
@5- GNLU is not a special college. If you work hard and work consistently then you are bound to succeed everywhere. Also it depends a lot on what you mean when you say 'outshine' others.
If you want to any thing more specific then I will be happy to answer that :)

Kindly elaborate when you say the past batches have been of little help. I belong to the 2004-2009 batch, i.e. the first ever batch.

How can u forget to mention the BIG TUSSLE between 2 distinguished personalities when u were giving the reasons for the "lagging" behind of GNLU ? !
I am sure none of the NLUs have gone through so much...and the fact that our students dealt with it and won moots and other competitions in spite of the poor administrative support.
Having said this i also want to clear all the aspirants that GNLU has passed that phase and now a lot of things have changed for the good...so don't worry...
@2 - dnt wrry...u won't be bereft of your stupor. GNLU caters to the needs of everyone. In fact, you will be surprised by everything and everyone...just give yourself a semester here! By the time you pass out you will be one knowledgeable earthling...even more knowledgeable than an 'interdimensional being' (=refer Indiana Jones).

Liked your post. Useful for the freshers being admitted to GNLU. Its to the point and does not go into the never-ending battle of the NLUs.
But I'd like to point out one thing. I don't quite agree with your statement, "Gandhinagar is the greenest capital in the country." I believe that has to be Chandigarh.

@7
In a lot of NLUs the number of pass out batches are a lot more. These pass outs have been working since a long time. They have established themselves properly and so they can now come back and help in recruiting the current students in the firms/companies that they work in. GNLu pass outs on the other hand have been working for only two years now, max. They are still establishing themselves and so naturally cannot support the current batches with placements. The 2004 batch has been a great help to a lot of people looking for internships though. I did not mean to offend or accuse any batch bhaiya. :) In college too, your batch was very very supportive to not only me, but all the juniors. Your batch has set a trend and it is being continued now. :)

@8- I am sorry to have missed that. I joined college after it was all over and things had settled down. All that I know about it is rumors and stuff which I was not able to confirm so i decided to stick to things that I knew. But I definitely agree that the BIG TUSSLE was a hindrance to GNLU's progress. I am glad that its over now. :)

@9- Thank you !. I saw a board in Gnadhinagar which said that "Welcome to the greenest capital in India". :D I guess that's just for the tourist then. :)

Gandhinagar is indeed the greenest capital city in India considering the (number of trees : number of humans) ratio of the city.

I completely agree with Phoenix on all aspects including the Booze.

It is true that the clash of those 2 personalities really pushed us back a bit, however we have taken some major strides since then. Another unlucky thing was the untimely death of the founder chairman which also pegged us back but then there is no point in thinking about the past when the future looks promising....

@Phoenix: I guess u must be 2007 batch if i'm not mistaken.

@vijay bhai: nice to see u active on LI. Nobody is taking anything away from ur batch.....

@18 what relevance does guj as a fast developing state have, with respect to whether an institution in that state is good or not? And of course, gujarat also takes care of minorities like no other state does...

@17- I guess you can rely on GNLU. No point spending a year studying for CLAT. Believe me, GNLU will not disappoint.

@19- Do I smell sarcasm in the last line ? :D

@20- You are in law school. If you want to ace it, studies will be your night life. Everyone worries about it but it doesn't make much of a difference. Also, you'll only be in college for 8 months. Rest 4 can be spent at your home town or at a place which has a good night life ! :D

FYI, Almost all the NLUs are pretty far away from the city. Gandhinagar is well connected to Ahmedabad. :)

I've had the occasion to witness a discussion among some of your students, and the degree of minority-unfriendliness was worrying. There was more or less a consensus that all Musilms are terrorists. And I know from an insider that this is a dominant viewpoint, shared both by a large part of the students as well as by the faculty. This sort of institutionalised intolerance I find is unique to GNLU. Apparently even the version of History that is taught is decidedly saffronised. I'm not saying everybody in GNLU echoes the same sentiment - but it is much more than a muffled whisper.
napster 24 Jun 2010, 13:17

@22- This is so not true.

GNLU is secular. Obviously there are a few students who have radical views. Such students are bound to be there everywhere. From your statement, I guess you are talking about a specific status message on facebook but a student. Well, I should tell you that they have the same views even before they joined GNLU.

Let it be known to all that GNLU is not minority unfriendly. There are Muslims in the college and they are never reminded of that fact, ever. Everyone is treated based on their general behavior. If someone is a jackass then he/she will be condemned by the other students irrespective of religion. Similarly a person who behaves properly will be treated nicely irrespective of religion.

When you say "There was more or less a consensus that all Musilms are terrorists." you are accusing all the students of the college. Get your facts right please.

GNLU does not teach history is a saffronised way. Please do not say such things if have not seen it yourself. Certain people have such views and you should not form an opinion about the college based on just a bunch of students. Kindly refrain from doing so in future. This is a public forum and you blatantly accusing the college is very damaging to the college's image. Imagine what impression is created on the new students.

GNLU is secular in its approach towards students. Students are taught as they should be. No anti minority feeling is prevalent in the college.

These comments of GNLU not being secular are rubbish.......
Muslims are terrorist????excuse me......nothin of this sort has ever been the view or been taught......

@22:

Well guys, I belong to the community that Mr./Ms./you-know-what 22 has mentioned in the comment and this is my 5th year at GNLU.

GNLU is not merely my alma mater, it is my home as well. And we all know how is one treated at his/her home (irrespective of the community one belongs to). GNLU is no exception.

It is most unfortunate, highly shameful and utterly disgusting to see people like 22 to resort to these (cheapest possible) means of indulging in mudslinging. My sympathies with 22 (i hope he/she/whatever-thats-called soon gets the much needed psychiatric treatment) and my heart goes out to the poor parents of 22 (who, in all probablities, do not know as to what sort of creature they have given birth to).

For all others, I hope that my restatement is assuring enough to clarify all the doubts that might have occured after reading the nonsensical comment posted by 22 above.

i would not like to join GNLU.
it has no campus.
no booze...

no campus placements.(in a batch of 160 only 40 got recruited.)

GNLU is in a miserable condition.

however i would love to be a part of top 6 NLU's.(the old is gold)

it's in a bad form.

@28-
Please get your facts straight.

First of all, GNLU's campus is almost done. Only 6 mths to go.
No booze is your problem. We are law students, not drunkards.
We have a pretty decent campus placement. The figure you have quoted is not accurate. I know that we did not have 100 % placements but they were not this low. A lot of our students went for higher studies or joined their parents.

So please tell me how is GNLU in a miserable condition?

At the outset, I would like to appreciate the writer of this post for his interesting endeavor.
One thing I badly wanted to point out- the Hostels in GNLU are awesome right now because there is attached Bathroom & Toilet in each room. This is unlike any other Law School Hostel in India.
Since, first years will be reading this post keenly to find information about various law schools and rectify their preference list, I would say that one should choose GNLU only if he has not got it in NLS Blore, Nalsar Hyd, NUJS Cal, NLU Jodhpur and NLIU Bhopal.
The reasons why I place GNLU below the above mentioned Law Schools are:
1-The Crowd- 160 per batch. 800 in the University. The most populated National Law School in the Country.
2-There is no Student Association in the University. For everything, you need to lick the Faculty’s arse. The absence of a Student Association indicates that the students are not interested in various activities at all. The Administrative Staff are the laziest and the dumbest you will ever find on the planet.
3-Mooting is managed by the Elitist group who commit grave blunders all the time- Remember when the so-called best Mooter in college drafted an Intra Round Moot Problem which was plagiarized from an old Jessup Moot Problem?
4-Debating is again only for the students who have the gift of the gab. First, the Debating Society was started only last year (Five long years after the University began) and till date there hasn’t been any Debating Workshops which was held. Second, the selection structure of the present Debsoc sucks. Instead of having a single round of selection for all Debates in one year, there are selections for each debate. And third, the debaters do not have international participation in debates at Oxford, WUDC, Asian Championships, etc. So, effectively the GNLU DebSoc sucks.
5-The quality and standard of Classroom Discussions is abysmal. Remember, a student has to stand the shit in the Classrooms for five long years.
6-There is no proper Football/Basketball Ground near the Hostel. The Sports Committee was even unable to liaison with SAI (Sports Authority of India) to permit GNLU Students to play various games. Except for the once in a year, Football league which was started last year, there is no throughout the year facility for sports.
7-The Students here are selfish. They only want to get a high GPA and fuck off from this place. No one is interested in developing the University. It is said ‘Students make the University’, but here ‘students are breaking the University’.

@30

I would say that one should choose GNLU only if he has not got admission in NLS Blore, Nalsar Hyd,NLIU Bhopal, NUJS Cal, NLU Jodhpur and HNLU Raipur.

however, personally i think RMLNLU may not have the old NLU status but still there is campus,facilities and most importantly LIFE.

so for me its like this:
NLSIU'
NALSAR
NLIU
NUJS
NLUJ
HNLU
RMLNLU
GNLU

@30- I am sure it is some very frustated student of the University unable to get things his way and trying to vent out his illogical and irrational opinions.
@31- Kindly get a life for yourself. When rankings from publishers are debatable, who are you to set your own standards? I know my friends from GNLU and they do have a LIFE! and I guess much better LIFE than people like you.;
Anonymous guest 1 Aug 2010, 03:50

@ #30 - judging by the content in the post, it seems to me that a frustrated student has vented out his/her anger on GNLU. One thing i'd like to point out is that THAT person isn't exactly helping "making the university". Do your own part in improving the college. I am sure that you are too uninterested in that or rather indifferent. Merely posting stuff like that wont change your responsibilities to your college.

Well in all Honesty the 'Night Life' may not be there, being Gujarat and all but who says there aint no 'hostel life', plus seriously alcohol is the reason you think GNLU is bad, you are right in not choosing this UNIVERSITY(as opposed to a PUB) cause the university refuses to choose you, and talking about reasonable things we have one of the best libraries for a law college.... so haters who became preachers get a life and your snobby nose out of our buisess

I have got into GNLU. Flying over to Gandhinagar tomorrow for initiating the admission process and for my first glimpse of the supposedly awesome new campus. I did my schooling in Mumbai and having lived there for the past 5 years I've grown used to a few luxuries like, having places to eat at even when it's 3.30am, an ubiquitous presence of Wine Shops', finding 14 varieties of fag at every shop you go to etc.
I do know about Gujarat and it's sanctimonious culture. I don't give a damn. I think GNLU is a great college. It's got a good infrastructure, nice faculty, good placements, good LLM offers... What more do you want?! I'm sure there would be ways to find booze. Right?! :-)
To be honest, i'm still a bit unhappy that I didn't make it into NLSIU/ NALSAR/ NUJS (PS. I think GNLU is in the league of NLUJ ..and i never really cared for NLIU) but let's just say, I left those colleges for the nerds! ;-) :-P
