Post my graduation from a top National Law School, I got an offer from a medium sized Company. My grades were not earth shattering, but I was not in the bottom of the class too.(lets say in the top 40 of the batch) A contributory factor was the slowness of hiring across markets. I decided to take the offer, which was moderately paying. In the course of my employment with the Company, I could see that I was stuck in a rut even after 6 months of my job. I have been trying desperately to move out. However, I never really got any offers at all, in these years of trying. On the rare occasions I did manage to get an interview,(I swear to God I am not lying) the interviewers, without exception, praised my initiative (in learning about sectors other than the one in which my Company is functioning as also about the sector in which my Company is functioning) and knowledge but uniformly suggested that I needed more experience and that having knowledge does not equate to having skills. Now, here is where it all turns circular- I would not get experience until I get into practice. At my workplace, I see that I am never going to be promoted as there are only two levels of lawyers- Head of Legal and everyone else. At the same time, in house experience is considered secondary even while recruiting for positions in Companies , in my experience, thus far. It has been more than 4 years now and I am starting to wonder if I have any hopes of making it to a good law firm at all. What may I do to increase my chances of recruitment? Should I quit this field and pursue another field altogether(I have an MBA in my mind, but I cannot afford to do one from abroad)? Would appreciate if someone could really provide me guidance in this regard.
