I have the same thing in mind. I’m from a national law school and even though the employment prospects aren’t that bad here; I want to do an MBA for the simple reason that it imparts great skill and will definitely add value to you regardless of what you want to do in the future; many law firms actually hire MBAs so as to better cater the needs of their clients as they provide an insider’s perspective. I think the main reason most law students don’t go for an MBA is the fact that both GMAT and CAT require you to be proficient at maths and most law students haven’t dealt with the subject for many years.

@same - I guess that’s true. But Maths isn’t really impossible. Nothing a little practice can’t improve. :) Especially if I start practising from now itself.

So, you plan on directly attempting CAT and GMAT after law school? Will it be a better choice to work for a year or two and gain some experience before trying? That is something most guys in other streams do.

I can totally relate to you here.

I am a second year law student studying BBA LLB from a top level NLU. After spending 3 semesters, Ive realized that law as i know it might not be my true calling. Internship at the High Court has confirmed that belief. The courts remind me of the family domination in the profession, the need for a family background to succeed, the utter incompetency of most of the litigators, which can be attributed to a lack of serious exams to screen worthy candidates(the bar council exam is a sham) etc.

Also, I find myself immersed more in the financial subjects, which somehow to me are more promising in that the finance field is regulated by veritable professional bodies with stringent standards to ensure the entry only of candidates worth their salt.(talking about CA,CS, MBA etc)

Im struggling to convince myself to complete the 5 year degree because of the certainty that I will never again enter any Court. (found them repulsive, no offence to those who think otherwise).

Im in a dilemma whether to drop out and change my course, or continue with the degree and go for an MBA after it? Want to know whether the MBA after law help me change tracks from law to finance?

It’s funny, because my doubts regarding my interest in a future law-based career also arose the day I visited my state’s High Court. It’s been a month or so since that visit and now I’ve realised that I’m definitely more interested in the Management side of my degree. Of course, studying law and it’s theories is interesting, but it’s not something I’m heavily invested in.

I hope someone manages to help us out here. Law + MBA is certainly a logical and unique combination. What I want to know is whether the B-Schools and Companies will agree with that opinion. :)

Listen up straight from the horse’s mouth.

I am an experienced lawyer - 8 years of work ex. and at present am at IIM Calcutta. Not some distant learning, not some executive weekend, but full time, residential. Typing this from the IIM Campus.

One year though. - something like ISB.

(ironically, internationally, its my prog that is MBA, and two year one is called MBM)

Thats right ! did law. practiced law. (lots of moots too in law school) gave GMAT (not CAT) scored “really”, “really” high and then joined IIM.

Was it a good option ? will tell you in may once the placements are over. :-)

In the meantime, if you have any questions you can ask here. Kians’ contemplating to give me an audience for the blog for law and MBA. :-)

also, is it difficult to get back to maths for aptitude tests like CAT & GMAT when you have been away from it for so long?

Check out the 2+2 two option offered by HBS and some other US colleges. You can apply straight from your 5th year of college.

There is enough precedent of lawyers doing an mba and then doing something business-related or even coming back and joining a law firm.
