The Tamil Nadu National Law School - hating on a college just because it's new, justified?
So, before anything else, I rejected HNLU in favor of TNNLS. Reasons being many. I always did want to go down South anyway. I’m not someone who’s caught up in the whole hype about NLUs and even though I’ve received countless lectures about how rejecting HNLU in favor of an institution that has yet to begin its classes, I refuse to acknowledge that it was a bad move.
The general consensus seems to be that HNLU is older and more well established. That it’d be a bad idea to join just because it’ll be the first batch. I understand, being a part of the first batch would make anybody insecure but every college has to begin somewhere right? Back in the day, even NLS and NALSAR had their first batches at some point of time, I’m sure they didn’t fare poorly. So the question that arises is- why the hate? Just because the bottom tier NLUs haven’t yet carved a niche, means that a new college with a clean slate won’t be able to, either?

just check up on the whole setup -TNNLS has yet to recruit it faculty. and if u are not after the NLU tag, i would very well suggest that any university giving a BA.LLB degree will do. no need to spend money on any college with a supposed NLU in its name. Yes it is not proper to hate a college which is new - but there are other NLUs which are 4 -5 years old & yet to make the mark. In comparison, maybe a private institution which is newly started will probably be a better option because there the promoters will be fighting to survive in this hugely competitive world unlike the NLU which does not have such a stake to prove itself since there will be no fear of the loss of investment - it is all at the governments expense.The private institution will probably make more efforts for placement than an upcoming NLU. My advice therefore would be - go to TNNLS if you must to but be prepared to face all the inconveniences - no faculty, no infrastructure & most of all - being guinea pigs for the institution.

Its only cause seniors and alumni make a lot of difference in NLUs. And things like committees, internships, moots,library, etc are already in place in these colleges, that once you enter the college, you don’t have to worry about things like improving and changing your college (and the feeling that all is shit) which usually happens in all new NLUs, and can concentrate on better things..NLSIU did not become what it is overnight.. It takes time.. Hence, your hate is justified.. HNLU, Bhopal are going down anyway cause of its location, and in about 8 years time, TNNLS will be better than HNLU, only cause of its industrial presence in the state.. NLU-D is one of the top institutions cause ppl opted for it because of ‘Delhi’.. and wen the first batch passed out, its one of the top ranked institution.. So don’t worry and have fun in college..

There’s been a lot of controversy surrounding DSNLU, about how there can’t be two NLUs in one state, so its very legitimacy is questioned.. Let’s not talk about that. (With Telangana, the dynamic changes though)

Amen to that. Succinctly written. A job isn’t my top most priority at the moment. I intend to do my LLM, then maybe enter into teaching. So placements, is not something of a concern to me. I did want to come down South. A clean slate appeals to me more than anything else. I just hope some quality students enter, otherwise, well… it becomes just another NLU, instead of really carving a niche for itself. 5 years is a long time… Fingers crossed.

Do not concern yourself about the University you are going to, if the choice to be made is between TNNLS and HNLU. HNLU hardly has any reputation to speak of. So it’s not like you are giving up on much.
Your mind seems to be made up pretty much,how old are you, 17? as you said Five years is a long time, I hope somewhere down the line you don’t regret the choice you are making and wish you had more options, career wise. But then, we all suffer the pangs of misplaced idealism at some time or the other. When you are digging your grave, make sure the view around isnt too bad. Enough of a Sunday evening rant.

Thank you for your suggestion about going to TNNLS, & about the inconvenience of the college, but let me tell you that TNNLS has an amazing infrastructure that is made in such a short period of time, students have all the facilities from proper healthy food in the mess to proper washrooms along with ACs in the classrooms. About the faculty, bit problem is there which is going to solve next year. And even Patna, Cuttack doesn’t have a proper faculty in spite being older than TNNLS. And TNNLS is growing at a fast rate & it’ll be among the top NLU’s in short time
no collage or university is good or bad it depends only on students and faculty members so dont think that TNNLS is bad because students who really want to study and achieve there goal ther are happy in tnnls and very near to their worthy goal…
