Exemption of Professional Tax for Advocates

DBS 9 Jan 2013, 06:44

I have received a notice to pay Professional Tax from the Profession Tax Officer,Mumbai. Notice has been issued under sub-section(2) & (5) of section 5 of the Maharashtra State Tax on Professions,Trade,Callings and Employments Act,1975. I have read that there is exemption in certain states but is anybody aware whether Advocates in Maharashtra are exempted from first 5 years from enrolment with the Bar?? I have read about this online somewhere but couldn’t find any notification regarding the same. Has anyone else received this notice?

I am a Junior Advocate, don’t work in a law/solicitor firm!

P.S. Found this article in TOI.
