What things should I focus on in my first year of law school

Hello folks,
The subject line is pretty self-explanatory, I guess.
I am currently in my first sem.
I am doing my course from Nagpur University which is nowhere close to being highly regarded by law firms, so I’ll have to do something extra in order to be able to compete with NLU students.
So, what should I do — diplomas, internships or something else?
Which internship is the best to do for a first year law student?
Your help will be more appreciated than you can ever know.

A consistently good academic record helps a lot.
So try to get good results as a habit.
Diplomas only help if and when you can answer related questions at the time of interviews… So do not burden yourself unnecessarily. 1-2 diplomas during the 5 year course are more than enough. The cherry on top would be that you actually like the subjects of your diploma. I say this because many of my friends took up extremely difficult diplomas in their immediate years and gained absolutely no knowledge. So choose wisely.
Internships ofcourse help a lot. For that you need a good CV, cover letter, a few well-placed contacts and lots of luck (A view propagated by all seniors) However, I don’t dwell on the lack of contacts as a pressing factor. Perform well, and things will come to you.
Hmmmm…what else.
Research publications kind of depict that you are not afraid of back-breaking research work. =D [Atleast I like to think that way…]
First year internships are best done at a good NGO which deals with some legal matters… NHRC, HRLN or State Human rights commission are good enough. I’d highly recommend to not join a firm as of now… A DC or a HC internship will help you learn much more right now.
