I am a UK qualified solicitor and have been working there for the past 4 years, so thought my advise might assist you to some extent.

The first thing you will have to do is to take a conversion exam called, QLTT and there are few colleges in London that offers the courses for the same. Before you can sit for the exam you will have to first apply to your Bar Council of the State to get your standing certificate and once you have procured that you can then apply to the Law Society England to get your Certificate of Eligibility to be eligible to sit for the QLTT.

Once you have passed your exam, you can then work as a Solicitor ( as this will be easiest way for you to secure job in the UK as a lawyer) otherwise you will end up doing a paralegal/secretarial work or chances are you wont even get that, looking at the grim and extremenly competative job market for legal professionals.

My experience with the recruitment consultants have not been very fantastic as they could be lazy asses and will not bother much with a Indian qualified lawyer again the blame goes to the image problem that Indian lawyers have globally (not being disrespectfull).

The best way to start with will be to apply to law firms directly and be open to any position in order to get the experience, its all about getting your foot into the door and once you have had some experience within the UK market it will be much easier for you to jump over.

Again i will say that the market is very tough and there are not many jobs around specially for someone with not much of experience, you will be pushed further down on the ladder as people with more experience are opting for jobs that requires less experience, obviously due to the recession.

All i would say that be open to positions within law firms, charity organisation, in house position as it will be about weathering the storm.

Hello Parvez, since you have been working in the UK, from the point of view of learning the ropes, can you tell me which is a better option to do a training contract or to start out by working in an indian firm. i have a few interviews with some city firms lined up but this seems to clash with the placement schedule at college for the tier 1 indian firms. so a little light on this would help. thanks in advance.

I happen to see to the right guidance given by you. I am also a Indian lawyer with a Tier 2 ICT visa just moved to UK along with my wife.

I have rich experience as a practicing lawyer as well as in house lawyer having worked for Banks and Financial Institutions.

From your reply i find that we need to pass the QLTT to qualify ourselves as a Solicitor,but i would like to know whether can we get any legal without that?

You need to get a reality check I’m afraid.

I am an English lawyer at a Top 10 UK firm in London.

The only way for you to get into a decent firm in London/ England is to get into a top 10 law faculty in England and to do the LLB in English Law, get a 1st or very good 2:1 and then fight for a Training Contract, for which the competition at good firm is less than 1 in a 100.

No top 100 firm is interested in a LLB from India or experience in India or LLM (where the first degree is from India) unless you go to Oxford or Cambridge for a Postgrad. Top firms are not interested in the QLTT (where you are India qualified) either.

I get fed up of being thinking that they can do the QLTT/LLM and get into a decent UK firm.

The legal job market is very down. British passport holding lawyers are not getting jobs and are moving to canada and australia and the gulf for better prospects. Yes its a good exposure being at the innovative pinncale of development of the common law. However people from india do not get to do corporate commercial stuff easily, unless you are from a top notch law course in UK and that too when the economy was doing well. One has to apply for training contracts with various law firms in UK which is for two years before you qualify as a solicitor after giving the QLTT.

The legal job market in London is very competitive and saturated atm. The major intake of law firms are through training contracts offered mostly to UK and EU undergraduate students studying in UK. The firms are very outright in saying that they do not want LLM’s. Besides, you have done law from India, which is again disadvantageous as you have no idea of English law. Although Queen Mary’s is a good institution, yet it is very hard to find a job with a good law firm.

I am a Indian lawyer with 9 years of work exp with top Corporates in India. I am drawing a handsome 3 package in India.

I am considering a dual qualification and the two attractive options are the New York Bar and UK Bar/ QLTS.

Before embarking on the journey, I need advise in being able to choose between the two. I am aware of the procedure for the two, but needed some insight on the ground realities as to jobs available.
