ragging
7 Jul 2012, 11:46
Sad day as two very good students who entered as freshers into NUJS Kolkata came back in a week. Rampant ragging, alcohol abuse and transgression of personal liberty by so called “seniors” who would ask you anything from washing their lingerie to dip non compliant juniors’ heads in buckets of filthy beer. Management is hapless

This is a very serious allegation and needs to be looked into immediately. NUJS has surely faltered on this front. why does the NUJS administration not understand how serious the situation of ragging is prevalent in the campus . Moreover the college authoriries seem to have turned a blind eye to this evil act. this has surely shown the real side of the academic culture which NUJS boasts off. Very sad indeed.
Dear All,
Ragging is abuse. Why do the students who leave the college, atleast complaint legally, this is horrible. Two careers ruined.
I understand authorities have openly expressed they are helpless, even in the past. One very senior authority said “do not expect the atmosphere here to be very academic. over the years we are more focussed on placements, so long as outcomes are liked by people, they have to sail with the wind that blows here, just wait things will be alright, you will be able to adjust, just blend in with your drunken tormentors” Presence of NIFT next door only adds to the merriment. Shop opposite the bank gets you whatever you want, even bail if you drink and drive and get caught.
Been there long enough to know the truth.
1. There isn’t a shop opposite the bank. None at all. Literally nothing. It’s the gate to nift for crying out loud.
2. People drink, almost exclusively off campus, it’s college. Chill. If you don’t approve, fine. I don’t need your morality shoved down my throat.
3. The most serious allegations for last. The MOST anyone has had to endure the three years i’ve been here is having to dance or sing. No violence, no threats, no humiliation. A joke or two and it’s over and at the end of it the chap making you dance will be the same guy you’ll be thanking for exam help in six months, the project/essay help in 2 and the coke/beer/lunch he buys you the next day.
There are a selection of dhobis in the vicinity, no one makes any one do their laundry, even if it’s just because we fear the consequences.
I’m anonymous here, there isn’t a benefit to be gained by lying, which is why I’m shocked someone made this stuff up. Who fills buckets with beer anyway?! If we’re such alcoholics, we’d drink it. Honestly, this feels like a real brat, getting a reality check where he’s at the bottom of a heirarchy and lashing out. For a fact, the ragging scene at NUJS is non-existent. I went through it, i see it every day. Frankly, i treat my friends a lot worse than the first years get treated and theyre not complaining on anonymous forums.
Denial of facts and lacing the events with lies does not cover for the ills that exist in NUJS, and the sorry plight that young people who joined this highly rated law university find themselves in. It is time that the authorities took cognizance of the happenings and acted.
I think legally india should do investigative journalism and get the truth out. I feel there is no smoke without fire.
