Ragging rampant at [a national law school] - stress causes child to withdraw his admission
We are a group of parents who are very concerned about the safety of our children studying at [a national law school]. There is ragging taking place to such an extent that there is physical violence involved and its become difficult to talk to our children as they have become evasive and unwilling to talk about the issue lest their seniors find out. One boy has already left this “much coveted” college as he could not handle the pressures of ragging.
The future of our children is at stake here, both physical as well as their mental health is in danger. A group of us are actively thinking of withdrawing our children from the college since the faculty is aware of this issue but turns a blind eye to it.
We wish to seek punishment for those involved in this hideous activity in order to put a stop to this altogether. Please advise us on the best course of action.

I am really sorry to hear that.
Would you mind getting in touch with us directly and confidentially via the contact link above:

Perhaps there is something Legally India can do to help?
Best wishes,
Kian
Please get in touch with the police. This shows the quality of the Bhopal college. Are the college authorities sleeping. What the heck is the V.C. doing. Please do something it is the life of someone elses child
This is ridiculous, least expected from a school that is one of the top 5 in the country. It just shows the lack of concern from the faculty’s side. The culprits should be identified and suspended to teach everyone a lesson for the future.
Students study for 1-2 years to get into these prestigious colleges and then are faced with such a pathetic and scary college experience, unbelievable. My child is currently studying for the CLAT, I will make sure that he does not choose NLIU Bhopal under any circumstances.
If nothing is done about this soon, I suggest you take it to the media; national newspaper or television.
the person who withdrew could at least make a police complaint.
It is shocking to know that students (with the knowledge of the faculty) such a prestigious “legal” institute indulges in illegal acts such as this!
Befriending juniors by way of friendly ragging is something else, but hitting people and torturing them to a point where they are compelled to leave the institute is AN ISSUE OF NATIONAL concern.
Tweet about this! Put this on Facebook! Get the attention of the other-wise news hungry media!!!
As shocking as this post may be, for now I urge everyone to slow down.
Until an independent third party, such as Legally India or other media, can corroborate this version of events, or otherwise, it is just an anonymous allegation in an online forum or a troll.
I would urge the original poster to please get in touch with Legally India, as requested earlier, as soon as possible so we can confirm the authenticity of the allegations. I promise we will keep any identities disclosed in our conversation on deep background.
Best wishes,
Kian
There has been some suspicious activity on this thread and we will delete any comments for the time being that do not appear to be anything other than trolling or contribute meaningfully to the discussion.
We take the allegation of the original poster very seriously, but unless the original poster can please provide some corroborating evidence or confidentially contact us with information soon, this thread may be removed.
Any light that can be shed on this situation by anyone in this thread or elsewhere would be appreciated.
This is ridiculous. We would never expect something like this from a National Law school. We’ve all been to college and understand that ragging is more of an interactive, get-to-know-each-other kind of activity and NOT a reason to hit children!
Serious action needs to be taken. Authorities need to be informed and issues such as these need to be escalated!
Whoever this is,
I am a 4th year student in the college. Ragging is hardly even visible in NLIU. The usual song and dance and intimidation ends in the first month itself. I request Kian to take this post off until legally india has a confirmation of the event from real people.
Also, its rather strange for parents to come to legally india and post an anonymous complaint.
1. this is not a complaint redressal forum.
2. Why are you anonymous? If your kid has been ragged, why haven’t you contacted the authorities in college?
The director, and the hostel warden usually address complaints seriously.
Also, NO student has left the college because of ragging. Everyone’s still here, and the college opened this monday. It would be exceptionally quick for a student to leave the college in 2 days, without informing the authorities. No one has left.
this is a hoax.
Please stop defaming colleges.
Please do not make false allegation without any proof and defame a prestigious college of this country.
i am also a 1st year student of NLIU and nothing like that had happened with me.
i also appeal legally India to remove that post.
I am a NLIU student. I am currently in the university and am witnessing all the happenings in the college. I can assure you that no form of physical ragging has taken place in the college. However, the news of a student leaving the college has been confirmed. When I talked to his mother she said there is no place for kids to dry their clothes in the hostel rooms and this makes the conditions in the hostel inhuman for her son Mr. V. I would personally request you parents to stop making such false allegations which have no base whatsoever. If you have a proof of such incidents happening in the college, you are free to contact the concerned authority, instead of posting such anonymous comments on an online forum.
Also, a personal request to Kian, please remove this post as it is defaming our college. A positive interaction takes place in every college, be it NLS, NALSAR or even NUJS. Parents should understand the fact that it is of utmost importance for a kid to know and interact with his seniors, reasons are pretty much obvious.

Concerned student of NLIU Bhopal
Thanks for your feedback, we will remove this post soon if we do not receive any corroboration of this.
I would urge the so called concerned parents of students to not defame my college. I am a first year student of NLIU Bhopal and I can assure you of no such incident taking place. There is a positive interaction going on in the college and we have been told about its importance. The guy who left the college, Mr. […], was my room mate, and he told me that he was brought up in a very lavish environment and he could not live in a hostel and he was determined to join NLU-Delhi instead as it would be closer to his home.
I would request the concerned parents to stop trolling on this online forum.
Its funny to know that people are so outraged even without knowing what happened!
Also there is no physical ‘ragging’ going in NLIU. Its just senior junior interaction which happens in very other college.
Stop making an issue out of it!!
Why dont you contact the ward’s parent - Im sure if the college refutes such incident they would immediately give the name contact no of the ward and his father as they have all the details
It is rather unfortunate that such false allegations are being levelled against NLIU, Bhopal. I have studied in this institution for the past 4 years and can vouch for the fact that the atmosphere in our law school is more congenial than most other National Law Schools in India. I have had the fortune of studying in India’s finest boarding school and am proud to say that the so called “Bhopal Law School” provides fine academic standards and comfortable boarding and dining facilities, to say the least. The senior-junior relationship at NLIU is something the entire student community is proud of. It is in fact one of the foundations of our institution.
The ‘ragging’ being referred to, is of a similar nature as in other National Law Schools across the nation. Anybody who disagrees with me can verify the facts by contacting students of other law schools. I am not claiming that 1st years are molly-coddled and indulged by seniors, but they are definitely not “ragged” to the extent that they are forced to consider leaving NLIU. This is preposterous and I on behalf of the 5th years strongly condemn such false propaganda against our institution. It is foolish to believe that the kid in question left NLIU because of ragging since, as has been pointed out previously, he left within a day of joining NLIU. No major incident relating to ragging has occurred on campus in the past 4 days. I along with a number of other 5th years have independently investigated such claims and they are all, without exception, false.
If you are envious of or prejudiced against NLIU, if you cannot digest the rise of NLIU as a potent force in the sphere of legal education in India despite the odds, if you cannot appreciate NLIU’s excellent infrastructure and illustrious alumni, then I suggest you get a life. Find a job. Do something creative. And before anything else, as has been mentioned earlier, disclose your identity or get in touch with either the student body or the administration. We are proud of our law school despite all its shortcomings and constantly strive to improve the existing systems here. We only accept criticism which is either substantiated by empirical proof or levelled by identifiable persons.
I request Kian to remove this malicious post from LegallyIndia since it is baseless and appears to be a result of ulterior motives.
Regards.
Dear concerned students of NLIU,
Firstly, I can assure you that the parents are not getting kicks out of defaming the college where their children are studying, they have no incentive to do so, rather the opposite.
Secondly, given you are smart enough to get into this college, you can be credited with realizing the fact that at the moment the students will be scared to complain or take any names.
Thirdly, the reason this is being voiced here is because its a public forum and believe it or not, that is the point of a public forum. As to one of the parents contacting the moderator to assure him this is not a hoax, I assume they will do so sooner than later.
Finally, whoever made this statement “Parents should understand the fact that it is of utmost importance for a kid to know and interact with his seniors, reasons are pretty much obvious” should know that this is exactly the reasoning that most people use to justify ragging, I am not saying that you are, but just exposing the line of thought.
Every student in the college is an adult, senior or junior and does not “need to be taught” how to interact with seniors. As to the seniors, they have not right to go about teaching the same.
-Friends of concerned parents
Sir/Ma’am,
It’s highly ridiculous that being parents raising such a huge issue of physical ragging, declared a criminal offence in India, you would choose a garb of anonymity, that too on a public forum where “law school mud-slinging” is everyday news.
There are better and more appropriate forums to voice your concerns and if seeking public attention to this issue is what you want, there is no lack of main-stream media in this country.
Being a student of the college, and not having heard of any such incident, I’d reassure the viewers that this is just a parent-troll or a troll-parent. We expect a higher level of maturity, and if you still think that the “ragging” here is “stressful” please furnish the concerned authorities with details.

As a student studying in this University in the second year, let me assure all of you that there is no ragging taking place in this University. As a student who is paying a considerable amount of fees and studying in this college, I am really sad when the reputation of the college is being tarnished which in turn would affect the reputation and placements of the students. I am able to understand the worries of the parents as even mine and my friends’ parents went through the same phase last year. The new admissions would take a few time to adjust to the surroundings. Home - sickness is also very common in new admissions.
So the purpose of this thread was to raise concern. That’s been done. The administration has always had a zero tolerance policy towards ragging. The senior students at the University have clamped down on acts of ragging. Let’s take down this post. It is ridiculous to even suggest going to the media. That would bring bad publicity. (I suppose that there are some who might be happy with that kind of thing. But I’d like to believe that most of us aren’t.) It makes absolutely NO SENSE to continue this thread in the light of these developments. Would Legally India be so kind as to take down this post?
It’s a crap … Useless
We are all 1st year students at NLIU and we can assure that no form of physical ragging, violence or abuse has taken place here. The seniors have been most co-operative and helpful so far and we are sure it will remain the same throughout our stay here.
NLIU definitely deserves its place among the TOP 3 law schools in India.
Still haven’t had any corroboration? Can we please pull the post down now? Like mentioned above we have zero tolerance so far as ragging is concerned, and disciplinary action would have already been taken against the seniors allegedly involved had there been any substance in the allegations being made.
Regards.
Dear All,
It is highly unlikely that a parent’s concern with ragging would be addressed by a public thread on a website. It refutes the credibility of the allegations that concerned parents would start online trashing of a top tier National College over officially complaining to the concerned authorities.
This thread is defamatory and I believe that was the purpose.
I request the Admin at Legally India to take note of the non provision of any credible information.

Dear Sir/Madam,
I completely agree with you that no first year needs to be taught or anything of the sort considering they are grown individuals themselves. But please also be mindful of the fact that even parents are bent on characterizing all interactions with juniors as ragging as you yourself did in the previous post (also “exposing” a thought process). Also, that many parents don’t take the separation of their kids from them very well and are often known to act emotionally, irrationally and over-enthusiastically.
I will not tell you to take my word for it, but believe it or, after some uncomfortable incidents 6-7 years ago, the student community has a strictly enforced code of self regulation. There are very strict boundaries drawn in this interaction. I will not pretend that these boundaries are never breached, even a 2nd or 3rd year is not very much more mature than a first year, but whenever this has happened, that senior’s batchmates, his/her seniors all make sure that corrective action is taken. This includes everything from apologizing publicly to even replacing the packet of biscuits eaten without consent. To talk of physical violence, it is unpardonable. The students themselves throw such seniors to the administration (and yes this has happened before). Every 2nd year student, before they meet the first years are informed of their boundaries very clearly not only by the staff and faculty but also the senior students themselves.
I’m sure that you will agree that interaction with seniors is a healthy thing. Whatever interaction that is bothersome to parents like a first year singing or dancing or attending extra lectures, all, let me assure you finds a worthy end. In this trimester, all the university clubs, cells, societies induct first years - and it is these interactions which allow the first years to find their niche, the seniors to see which lot fits where. I’m not saying that this will give a license to a senior to use physical violence or mentally torture any junior. But that is why we make boundaries! Most seniors are wise enough to figure out the repercussions of “ragging” and those who are not, are stopped by the wise ones.
In what is considered a healthy interaction, the standard has become more and more liberal with every passing year especially at least since my first year many years ago. Please also understand that a first year’s sensitivity is also paramount here. I remember from my final year how one of the 3rd years then was nearly expelled because he told off a first year rather harshly when he came for “help with studies” at 3AM. That first year complained he was ragged with a lot of other stories which were hard to believe. Parents need to understand that some reactions are often normal and have nothing to do with a first year being singled out to “rag”. These things happen in between senior students, in offices on roads, everywhere. Yet in all other places it is uncivilised behaviour and indiscipline but if a first year college student is involved, it is “ragging”.
Anyone who has been to a residential school or university will agree that it has its own eco-system. It never serves good when disrupted unnecessarily. This is why I will reiterate the comments above that it is no good voicing your opinion here. In case you want to enter a mud-slinging match, by all means continue and I’m sure many will indulge you. If you want a solution or even just peace of mind, take the appropriate route.
I urge you to speak to some senior students if there are any incidents in the hostel; the students of NLIU are a very small close-knit society. They will provide the best solutions. If that is not a good enough option for you by all means speak to the warden - Mr. Dhiren or Dr. Birpal. If you’re still not happy, speak to Dr. Rajiv Khare, Proctor (from my experience, he loves reprimanding students and taking strict action against them for everything). Last but not the least, our vice-chancellor, Dr. S.S. Singh. They have all done their jobs exceptionally well in the past and there is no reason why they will falter now.
Please understand that if you do not take this step and only take your ward’s word for what happened, you will ruin a student’s career and a parent’s dream. You know what ragging provisions are like and they hardly have a happy ending for either party if you go down that path. There is no ragging in NLIU, no human rights violations and for god’s sake, there are worse things to worry about in the world.

A fine example of my point in the earlier post. An emotional and over-enthusiastic parent. I doubt this individual has made any inquiries or taken any steps to find out the procedure to report such instances. I’m sure its not even about her ward. Any rational person would not jump to conclusions about the “Bhopal College“‘s quality and worth on the basis of this. Especially, if they’ve heard of what ragging means in an IIT. But of course it says a lot about the IITs and everyone knows that its the worst institution in the country!
I blame reality television though.
Dear concerned parents and concerned friends of parents,
I am a first year student in NLIU Bhopal and I highly resent the charges laid against my university. As to not complaining about people online, there is nothing to prevent us from naming names under the very same garb of anonymity you all are using, is there? We are smart enough to realise that. It is very interesting that you are insisting that physical violence is going on though many NLIU students have informed you that it is not the case. And the point of a public forum is NOT defaming a reputed institute with absolutely no positive proof. It is in extremely bad taste.
Contact the university if you have a problem. Don’t spread about rumours.
An interesting discussion. Without opining on the alleged (and unproven) situation in Bhopal at all, I am a little concerned.
Why is this ‘positive interaction’ acceptable exactly? From what I understand, this goes on in almost every national law school, to some extent or other. It may manifest as forcing juniors to sing silly songs for groups of seniors, making them perform pointless tasks, or mildly demeaning them and establishing a seniority pecking order (under the guise of humourous and harmless interaction).
This may not be ragging in the IIT sense, but to my mind this definitely lies firmly on the ragging continuum, and it is potentially the thin end of a wedge, and a bad place to start from.
Who decides when interaction finishes and ragging starts? Who is to stop individuals or group who have a hard time drawing that line in each case? Why not outlaw this kind of behaviour altogether?
Take the eggshell skull rule - what if simple interaction with one student who may be particularly sensitive ends up causing serious psychological damage?
Is this a partial explanation for why students from minority backgrounds find it hard to fit in? Does this explain why there is such a high ‘attrition’ rate in national law schools?
Is ‘interaction’ the way intelligent adults who will soon be lawyers should behave?
I know that ‘interaction’ is justified by saying it forges stronger bonds between students and batches, but does it do this at the expense of those who leave or get bullied out?
All said and done, I find this concept of ‘interaction’ slightly hard to stomach.
I welcome your views.
I fully agree with you - the so called healthy interaction(sic) really may break up a young mind who is all set to enter a professional course. Further you are right in saying whart are the boundaries for such interaction, who is the umpire to watch the one sided match - now the child who has already loast one complete acadameic session who will take the resonsibility - it is absolutely ridiculous to camuflouge it has a healthy interaction
But you must come out with the truth
I am a first year student of NLIU. By personal experience i can confirm that there is no ragging whatsoever .Further i would humbly request the group of concerned parents to mention their ward’s names because me and my batch mates as a part of this prestigious institute find it extremely disrespectful that an institution such as ours is being defamed without any concrete facts or justifications.
Kian,
I believe its best if we discuss the merits and demerits of the junior senior interaction on another thread, with a different subject.
Regards.
I’m a first year student here at NLIU. And i’d like to draw particular attention to the fact that defaming our college being students here is not something a “close to sane” person would do, so even if for arguments sake had there been such alleged ragging under the veil of positive interaction, no one would complaint on a public forum in this manner, except trolls inclined to defame an institution they are not a part of.
Any real complaint would be addressed to the concerned authorities in a legally conclusive manner and (STRESSING AGAIN) not be trolled on a public forum to ridicule the institute.
Here at nliu we have regular checks all day long by the wardens and other authorities, even the new boys hostel is separate from the old boys hostel, i.e the freshers are allotted different hostel blocks altogether.
Coming back to the real issue, i can bet the forum mods still have no conclusive evidence about the allegations, and having been given the time to pull down the post the continue to feed the trolls, thus abetting in defamation without conclusive evidence or cause.
I really hope the mods take notice of the malpractice going on and prevent the ongoing degradation of the repute of a highly respected institute such as NLIU.
Brilliant point Kian! The few students who are not that comfortable with the public interaction/humiliation are affected by this in the worst possible way. Add to this, the social pressure that is created at the time of ragging, by saying, everyone else is comfortable with it, you are the odd one out ends up increasing your reservations if nothing else.
All those who are saying here regarding ‘knowing’ juniors, I don’t know from where they’ve come, but the last time I checked, We don’t ask people whom we want to know to sing and dance before their name. We all are responsible for the uncanny sense of superiority we feel when it comes to interacting with junior. Just because you cracked Clat a year before does not make you superior than anyone else and like any other relationships, If you want juniors to respect, earn it rather than force it.
I am a parent of 1st year in NLIU. According to my ward, it is apparently a conspirecy by a greedy parent of 1st year student who got in another university (not among these 14 NLUs that are included in CLAT 2012).
They wanted their fees back from NLIU and for obvious reasons, NLIU doesn’t pay back the fees once classes start. Best way to get the fees back is to make the grounds to withdraw the ward form the school.
Its not true that wards are scared of talking to their parents. I talk to my ward every day. My ward is absolutely fearless and happy.
Regards.
