NALSAR and NUJS!

nikitha 17 Feb 2010, 22:40

Hey everyone,

Well there is a thread about NLSIU vs NALSAR !..but could anyone shed some light on which among the two should ideally come next on the pref list-NALSAR or NUJS as many say that the rank of NALSAR has come down in the recent past..but at the same time NUJS was always on the third position in the rankings of different sources!

Please give in your views!

nalsar, without doubt!!!

AnonymousLLB 18 Feb 2010, 02:48

nalsar can be compared only 2 NLS…there is a BIIIIIGGGG gap between nalsar and nujs!

AnonymousLLB 18 Feb 2010, 19:12

I can tell u the full history behind the debate.

Stage 1- NLSIU is the king. It is THE law school. Talks of NALSAR and NUJS rising are heard.

…NALSAR and NUJS kick serious dirt in India with fabulous placements, international achievements.

Stage 2- NALSAR and NUJS along with NLSIU are recognised as tier one law colleges by everyone- Halsbury, LST etc etc

Stage 3- Ranbir Singh effect. NALSAR is number two. NUJS number three.

…NALSAR takes a lead.

Stage 4- Ranbir Singh leaves. Along with him his trusted team. A void creeps in NALSAR. The new VC is just not as good. NALSAR stalls. NUJS recruits some fabulous faculty in Shamnad Basheer, Manoj Kumar Sinha, Sudhir Krishnaswamy and Pritam Baruah.

NUJS and NALSAR presently are at equal footing. Peace.

AND PLEASE DON’T MAKE THIS A MUD SLINGING MATCH. NLIU bhoal and NLU jodhpur too are just as good. There isn’t a thing at NLSIU which you won’t get at NLU jodhpur.

And once you land in these law schools its solely upon you that where you end up being.

A rank 1-10 in Amity is just as good as rank 70-80 in NLSIU. And I know people in UILS (punjab university) who I know will do better than some people in NLS-NALSAR-NUJS…coz they are enterprsing enough.

AnonymousLLB 19 Feb 2010, 00:36

The history is pretty accurate. :)

Now we have come back to square one as you rightly pointed out.

NLSIU reins supreme with NUJS and NALSAR biting its heels and NLUJ and NLIU following them closely.

But having spent time going both to NUJS and NALSAR and talking to students and faculty there, **I feel NUJS has taken a slight lead.**Many factors account for this: NUJS of late has gone on a war footing to recruit the best legal brains from their respective fields. Great initiatve…and everyone wants to work under Prof MP Singh who gives great academic freedom to the scholars there.

Prof. Ranbir Singh, Ghanshyam Singh the administrative heroes behind NALSAR’s success have left and have taken with them a lot many faculty. The overall management of NALSAR was bound to be affected.

The recent AP reservation won’t coz much of a worry but nevertheless does make some difference.

But then again look at NALSAR’s acheivements…rhodes scholar…great year in mooting. It remains a great insitution.

Very little to choose between NUJS and NALSAR. But if I were a CLAT hopeful today, I would put NUJS at number two.

ps- those concerned about placements, be concerned when you land up there. All these three get offers from everywhere, in dozens!

ps 2- please do engage in posting constructive comments. Don’t make loose commens like NALSAR is way ahead of NUJS or vice versa.

AnonymousLLB 19 Feb 2010, 14:24

kindly dont misguide the clat aspirants…its an accomplished fact that NLS is number one, NALSAR is number two and NUJS and NLIU are 3 and 4 resp.

its nt a debatable topic and nalsar is inarguably number 2.

END OF DISCUSSION!

AnonymousLLB 19 Feb 2010, 15:09

@ LAW STUDENT

Wow! NALSAR is number two. End of discussion!

Your proclammations won’t do anything constructive man!

BTW…just look what students have preferred…a democratic way of looking at things.

NLS is number one, NALSAR number two and NUJS number three. (Basically I support your point but don’t like the way you are putting it).

Howsoever one must accept that atleast for this year NUJS has move rapidly to further narrow the gap that existed between itself and NALSAR. And I won’t be surprised if some people prefer NUJS over NALSAR.

AnonymousLLB 19 Feb 2010, 15:10

I still don’t think from where nujs issue pops up. Nljs and nlusiu and Nalsar are top two and then comes nujs, nluj and nliu. The point here is even though the Nalsar admin has changed but the key issue is Ranbir singh and Ghanshyam Singh both were never good teachers. The current admin is okay but the thing which makes the difference between Nalsar and nujs is the environment. I would still appeal to clat aspirants to go in an orthodox manner. The reservation fuss is horizontal Nalsar do have 30% woman’s reservation which is non- existent same applies to A.P. reservations .

AnonymousLLB 19 Feb 2010, 15:14

@ Law student

Another thing: Who says NLIU is number four. I know many people who prefer NLU over it. Some of the ‘cool’ guys go to symbi etc and enjoy their life rather than staying on in well…Bhopal (not a wise career decision, but maybe a wise life decision)!

NLIU and NLU are two great instis…and you are free to choose between them. But please don’t make averments devoid of logic with no facts to corrborate.

Ask any person who knows this field well and he would give u this guide

1.) NLSIU

2.) NALSAR/ NUJS

3.) NLIU/ NLU

Sachin Malhan used to say this years back and the today’s pundits stick to this. It is a great thing that these colleges have kept up their standards!

AnonymousLLB 19 Feb 2010, 15:18

Nljs and nlusiu

(THESE COLLEGES DO NOT EXIST) LOLOLOLOL.

And from where does NUJS pops up. Halsbury law pops it up, LST pops it up, Mint pops it up and Outlook pops it up. And if you don’t pop it up…bang your head against some wall.

AnonymousLLB 19 Feb 2010, 16:21

m sorry but yea..even i agree that NLU Jodhpur and NLIU Bhopal are on an equal footing! :)

nd the gap between NALSAR and NUJS has not decreased…rather it has increased…NALSAR recruited some top quality professors this january and my frnds in nalsar told me that the current first year batch is very good…in that batch there are 14 students who have preferred nalsar over nls…nd the quality of students does make a difference…also the environment at nalsar is much better than nujs, i.e the students are much more competitive and are involved in a lot of extra-curricular activities…nalsar’s supremacy in mooting and rhodes, felix and inlachs scholarship for nalsar students is a proof of that.!

AnonymousLLB 19 Feb 2010, 16:22

@Cmmmm… are u planning to open new law schools?? NLUSUI…nljs…lol!

AnonymousLLB 19 Feb 2010, 18:36

NUJS is in the center of the city, Salt lake city to be precise, the poshest of the areas in CAl.

That NALSAR is in Hyderabad is a fallacy. Its far away from civilisation.

NUJS has a 5 acre campus.

NALSAR has a 50 acre campus.

NUJS and NALSAR have equally fantastic placements.

Take your own pick. Both are equall good.

AnonymousLLB 19 Feb 2010, 18:50

NUJS is in the center of the city…bt how does it help??? students hv got nthng to do with the location of the college…nd if you talk about IN-CAMPUS facilities…NALSAR is inarguably the best…the hostel facility is awesome…the library is largest in INDIA…yea its even bigger than that of NLS…the campus is eco frndly…nd moreover there is a beautiful lake beside the campus…what else can a college offer???!!?? nd about the placements, any day nalsar gt better foreign recruiters!

NALSAR WAS MY FIRST PREFERENCE…AND IT IS THE PLACE TO BE!

AnonymousLLB 19 Feb 2010, 18:57

but i must confess, NUJS guys hv kickass fun!! They do all the masti in the world…i hv been to NUJS once, for invicta, and can say that NUJS campus life rocks.Totally! ;)

AnonymousLLB 19 Feb 2010, 22:38

I guess its becoming an indirect mudslinger allright …

right now .. without a doubt owing to their alumni and established market name NLSIU is at the lead …

NALSAR was affected by Mr. SInghs departure but lets not kid ourselves … NALSAR was not exactly so fragile that it would be shaken up that badly … its gaining .. its either as good as NLS or its the nextbest …

sadly due its GEOGRAPHICAL positioning NLIU bhopal is forgotten at its 3rd … theres a reason its been put there again n again .. and with the new director its bound to go places … but at the same time a strong argument also stands for NLU Jodhpur and NUJS .. the latter specially cashing in from its Cal advatage very clearly …

my advise to the CLAT aspiratns is … please dont be misguided … please dont DIE for a college … some sane ppl have thankfully pointed out very clearly that it doesnt matter where you are if you can proove yourself … you could loose yourself in the rat race in a place like NLSIU and you might loose the chance to add that extra bit to your CV in bhopal … but eventually its all about YOU

AnonymousLLB 20 Feb 2010, 13:47

NUJS IS MY CHOICE THOUGH I WILL BE EXTREMELY HAPPY IF I GET EVEN NALSAR WHICH IS MY THIRD CHOICE.

TALKING TO MY FRIENDS, COUSINS IN THESE PLACES I KNOW FOR SURE THAT CAREER WISE BOTH THE COLLEGES ARE ON EQUAL FOOTING. IF I DO WELL ACADEMICALLY IN ANY, I’LL GET A JOB OF MY CHOICE.

BUT WHAT TILTS MY CHOICE TO NUJS THAT IT IS IN A PRIME LOCATION IN CAL**. I WANT TO SPEND MY YOUTH IN A FUN, HAPPENING PLACE. ALSO THE RIGOUR OF NUJS CURRICULLUM WILL ENSURE THAT I DO NOT SLACK.**

NLSIU, FOR NOW REINS SUPREME.

JUST AN OFF COMMENT…AND I HEAR NUJS IS THE BIGGEST RECRUITER OF NALSAR…:) ITS JUST RECRUITED THREE FACULTY MEMBERS WHO HAD STUDIED FROM NALSAR :P

BUT I THINK ULTIMATELY IT DOESN’T MATTER. IT DEPENDS ON PERSON’S CHOICE AND ITS BETTER TO ASK SOMEONE U KNOW (A FRIEND OR A RELATIVE) AND NOT RELY ON SUCH FORUMS TO MAKE YOUR DECISIONS. I KNOW A LOT WHO WILL GO TO ANY LEVEL TO PRAISE THEIR COLLEGE AND MALIGN THE OTHERS… :(

NLS-NALSAR-NUJS-NLIU-NLU ALL ARE GREAT PLACES TO BE IN. I HOPE THAT I AM THERE!!!

nikitha 20 Feb 2010, 17:56

Thanx ALOT to all those who gave in their views and facts!it helped me look at it from both sides ..!

as of now im thinking of placing NUJS above NALSAR..

if anyone can contribute anything else to this thread or if you have some other facts ,I’d be grateful!

m a 2nd year NUJS STUDENT and i am well aware of the current situation…dis is not the best place to form opinions about your preferences coz people here belong to the various NLSs, so the opinion given by them is generally biased( who doesnt wanna place his/her college over others?)…so think properly before you decide, because u mite have 2 regret later…m saying so because some of my frnds had messed up their preferences and later on regretted…so do what the world does and fill the preferences accordingly…had i been in ur place, i wud hv filled the preference in the orthodox manner, i.e. NLS-NALSAR-NUJS-NLIU/NLU-GNLU-HNLU…

think nd den decide, coz haste makes waste!

nikitha 20 Feb 2010, 20:40

oh-uh..! i havnt yet finalised my pref list..was just thinking about it!

though,NUJS ,i was always keen on it coz of the location!

AnonymousLLB 21 Feb 2010, 13:50

As someone has already pointed out - aspirants are well advised to not rely on posts contributed by those claiming to be from one law schools or another.

It’s messed up, but there have been known incidents of law students posting under aliases such as “NLS Student” or “NUJS Student” to further their own opinions. Don’t pay attention to anyones opinion only because they claim to be a student at one law school or the other.

Simply put, if it really is about getting “your” preferences right, pay attention to the following.

Firstly, its “your preference”. There’s nothing “orthodox” about that. Research on the respective law schools - their faculty, infrastructure, past achievements (not just over a year or two, but consistent performances), alumni, quality of student intake, recruitment, location, etc. Anything and everything that matters to you.

Secondly, if in doubt, read up on rankings in other magazines. (Just not India Today!! They have the most botched up rankings ever!) But please don’t rely on the “rankings” part. Merely focus on the information that they provide about the law schools. For that matter, even the LST website gives a decent background to a few law schools. But take everything you read any online forum with a pinch of salt.

Thirdly, put everything you research in a perspective. Granted, NLS may have a few more achievements under its belt. But then, the first batch to pass out of NLS was way back in 1992. The first batch from Nalsar passed out nearly 10 years later, and from NUJS some 12-13 years later. The point being, NUJS and Nalsar, both, are phenomenal law schools to be at and just the fact that you’re having this discussion shows how much they’ve achieved in a small span of time.

Without going on about “which” law school I chose, what I can say is - that’s how I made my choice. And no regrets. In fact, the one I chose - was the only exam I wrote and I’m still convinced that I’m happier for that choice.

At the tend of the day, all the law schools will give you the liberty and the opportunity - perhaps some more than the others. It is, indeed, in your hands to make it count.

PS - But, every other factor considered, if you’re looking for a better college experience based on the city, Calcutta is your city. Unlike all other law schools, NUJS is bang in the middle of things. And Calcutta has a lot for any traveler to explore. But please, thats only my personal opinion.

AnonymousLLB 22 Feb 2010, 10:12

Given that over 12,000 are going to take CLAT, I think it is a little

presumptuous to believe that one is going to have a choice

between NLS, NALSAR and/or NUJS once the results are out.

All the more because even a difference in a few marks may

mean a difference in over 300-400 rankings.

Though I do not know the seat allocation formula, most of the

successful aspirants will not really have much of a choice

and may have to settle for whichever law school is alloted to

them (correct me if I am wrong).

Truly, the CLAT takers should be more concerned about

asking which college NOT to join. My intention is not to convert this

discussion into another slug fest, but I do believe that there are certain

law schools under the CLAT umbrella which are inferior to law schools

which are not under the CLAT umbrella. Hence, it would be prudent

to avoid such law schools if you have a better option.

Legal Dodo

AnonymousLLB 22 Feb 2010, 11:50

Agreed. Must know which law schools to avoid.

But, Re: your first point - the logic in your argument is flawed. Even if the marks separating the ranks are thin, the preferences given by the applicants would play a role. Moreover, the starting point of the debate here is a presumption that a student has a ‘choice’ between ranking one law school higher on their preference list than the other. So, what exactly is your point there? That since the competition will be stiff, the preferences won’t matter? That’s just flawed.

I think you misunderstand the way the CLAT works. The exam let’s you rank your preferred law schools in your applications and the allotment for that law school would depend upon your rank. So, even if there are 12,000 applicants, just about everyone (even those within with the same ranks) would still have a choice.

Say, take the student at rank 252. Assuming there are 53 seats at NLS, a 100 at NUJS and another 100 at NALSAR (just an assumption) - Now, if 53 students have already opted for NLS, and 99 have opted for NALSAR and 99 for NUJS. Now, whether the student at rank 252 chooses NUJS over NALSAR or the other way around does matter! However, for a student ranked 253rd, there may be little choice. But, for every one of those ranked higher than him, there is a choice.

PS - the number of seats mentioned above is just an example and I’m certain that these don’t represent accurate intake strengths of the respective law schools.

AnonymousLLB 22 Feb 2010, 13:04

Thank you, HoHo. I must admit my ignorance about how seat allocation is done under the CLAT system. Thank you for educating. I’m still a little confused. If you list NLS, NUJS and NALSAR among the top three choices and land up with a rank of 500 or so, it is unlikely that you will be offered a seat in any of these three. What are your options then?

Does the application allow you to give a preference of all ten or so law schools covered by CLAT?

Apologies for digressing from the main topic of discussion.

Legal Dodo

AnonymousLLB 22 Feb 2010, 13:56

mr dodo, why do u presume that an aspirant will get 500 rank…anyone who is preparing for clat is aiming for the top 100 rank…nd if his preferences are messed up, he’ll mess up everythng…!

FYI, there is no concept of counseling in clat, the students have to fill the preferences beforehand in the app. form, thats y we r having this topic in our discussion!

AnonymousLLB 23 Feb 2010, 14:47

I can totally understand your pain in deciding which law school to give as my preference..

Just so you know i gave clat last year and my preference was NLS,NALSAR,NUJS..I was alloted NUJS according to my rank.. After spending 22 days i was upgraded to NALSAR because of a vacant seat.

I have seen them both well enough now.

I will admit that i admit that both of them are nice places, but i am slightly inclined towards NALSAR because i am studying there.

NUJS has a small, lively and bustling Campus in the city with a strong faculty..There Hostels are not so decent though, i know for a fact that there is shortage of rooms in the Girls Hostel and you need to clean up your vessels after each meal you eat (it actually gets to your nerves after some time). Luckily for them they have a good faculty base.. Also the closer location to the city makes sure you can go haver fun and paint the town red..

NALSAR on the other hand is far from the city (about 40 mins by bus) located next to a lake and has a picturesque 50 acre campus. the faculty is decent compared to NUJS.. its not that good and does not fare so bad.. Infrastructure here is much better(only those who have been to both the places can tell you that).. I also realized that law school hardly gives you time to have fun.. for most part of the day you are so engrossed in project submission, mooting(NALSAR is reigning mooting scene now), debating, studying(NALSAR has 6 set of exams in a year while NUJS has 2) that you hardly get time for anything else..its not like we dont have fun, we go to the city, dhaba etc.. You got to agree that where there are 400+ students studying they must have devised there own ways of having fun..

the rest is up to you to decide.. i would suggest do some more detailed study and mark your options and study.. it is not a easy task to come in the top 200..

Best of luck

AnonymousLLB 23 Feb 2010, 15:01

and just if you are wondering will the AP reservation dilute standards..

every year about 10-12 ppl from AP anyway make it to NALSAR..

so a reservation of 16 seats wont affect the quality much..

AnonymousLLB 23 Feb 2010, 17:53

Come on! Washing your own plates isn’t a big deal!!! :O :)

So according to you NUJS has better faculty and better location, whereas NALSAR has better infra.

JFYI the situation in the hostels is very much settled now. It seems that this years batch had a lot many girls. Some problems arose early on…but now aal izz well!

nikitha 23 Feb 2010, 17:58

Thanx there for the valuable input..!and now im thinking of marking my preference list in the conventional order! i did’nt noe about the hostel problem at NUJS..!anyways thanx again!

AnonymousLLB 23 Feb 2010, 21:33

LOL…THERE IS NO ‘HOSTEL PROBLEM’ IN NUJS. WE HAVE GOT A ROCKING HOSTEL LIFE!!!

THERE WAS ONLY TEMPORARY PROBLEM COZ THIS YEAR THE GIRLS OUTNUMBERED BOYS. A MINOR PROBLEM WHICH HAS NOW BEEN RESOLVED DID OCCUR THOUGH!

And I think NALSARITE puts the most sane comments. The situation as it stands now is thisl

1.) NUJS HAS GOT A BETTER FACULTY, NALSAR A BETTER INFRASTRUCTURE.

2.) NUJS IS LOCATIONALLY AT A SUPERIOR POSITION.

For placements you really don’t need to worry. Both are equally matched. Therez no recruiter which would prefer a good chap from NUJS to a NALSAR one…and vice versa.

Take your own pick**. NALSAR IS ACADEMICALLY MORE RIGOUROUS. NUJS IS HIGHER ON JOIE DE VIVRE QUOTIENT!**

Tough choice if you have to choose between the two!

AnonymousLLB 23 Feb 2010, 22:53

Faculty is temporary. Infrastructure is permanent.

Nalsar’s faculty can improve. Nujs has too small a campus for any infrastructural development.

Now u knw who is better

AnonymousLLB 23 Feb 2010, 23:03

I never commented about the “ROCKING” aspect of your college or Hostel life, my dear friend..I am sure you do and so do we..

I merely said that the Hostels have glitches.. 500+ students crammed up in just 2 hostels just gets claustrophobic..I felt this too while I was there.. and how big do you think your single rooms are, I have seen them too..

If college means just having fun, i suggest you should contemplate joining a DU college..

you need to pass out with knowledge then think differently..

Like I said, even we have fun here too, just because we are not in the center of the city does not mean we study 24X7..

AnonymousLLB 24 Feb 2010, 01:13

Well, you never commented on the ‘ROCKING’ aspect of NUJS’s hostel life…but someone else, who has lived more than ummm 22 days? surely can. Right?

Claustrophobic…oh! really!ha! with the lovely salt lake city around? Don’t kid me!

And I heard one guy from NALSAR’s cricket team say this about tis ‘50 acre campus’…“sookha ghaas hai saara”…(its all dry grass…dessert)

Now please don’t get me wrong…my own preferences read NLSIU-NALSAR-NUJS…and I think it should be for everyone else…but making derogatory remarks on the size of NUJS’s campus is something I cannot digest.

And a small campus does have its benefits…you can go to the library or the gym whenever you want…and on a day when you slept for long…just dash off to the college :)…

And for sports and atheletics NUJS recently got a ‘formal’ tieup with the Sports authority of India (which is just accross the road)…so no worries on that front too.

Finally, a small campus might restraint NUJS’s further infrastructural growth…but I hear talks about acquiring some land…so lets see.

AnonymousLLB 24 Feb 2010, 21:57

NUJS v NALSAR - the rivalry is as old as the colleges themselves. And it’s all in good spirit.

At the outset - I study at NUJS and I chose NUJS over NALSAR.

1. Infrastructure

It would be a shame for anyone to rely on a few comments here and fall prey to this misconception that NUJS’s infrastructure is “incomparable” to the other law schools.

NUJS fares pretty well when compared, in general, to other universities. It’s true that the campus is spread over some 5 acres, but that’s only because 5 acres in this part of the world is more than sufficient for all our needs. The fact is, add to that an entire Sports Authority of India complex and a stadium which are right next door, the market areas, the hang-out places, a bank, other relevant places, etc - the only things that you would need a campus for are (a) the hostels and (b) the academic building.

So, if you ask me - with all these facilities RIGHT around the campus, is 5 acres “too small” an area for a national law school? I would, without any hesitation, tell you - No, it’s not. It’s big.

Do we “feel” a space crunch here? No, we don’t. We have a well-planned and spacious city around us, and every god-damn thing that we may need. Infrastructure wise, NUJS is surely not “behind” any other law school. In fact, I think it’s one of the more pleasant campuses I have set foot on.

However, at the same time, the authorities have been chalking out plans to acquire some more land in anticipation of the future needs of the University. The word around is that the land would in most likelihood be utilized for an even bigger library (the current library is pretty huge and well equipped) and accommodation.

2. The Girls’ Hostel

Two of the current batches have a rather skewed sex-ratio. This is partly because the University’s intake, which as of today stands at around 120, was not always this high. Besides, many students (like in the girls hostel earlier, and the boys hostel still) have had the luxury of residing in double rooms by themselves. Therefore, in light of the incoming batch’s strength, a temporary re-arrangement was required. But like someone posting earlier commented - all that seems to have been sorted out.

3. The Quality of the Hostels

I’ve stayed in hostels before, but the NUJS halls of residence are probably the most entertaining / fun hostels I have been in. At the end of the day, rinsing your plate with water is hardly any reason to base ANY college application on. Pretty much everything at NUJS is student-run. At the end of the day, the choice is up to us - we choose whatever we do. From my two and a half years at the university, I believe my hostel life has given me the independence and the responsibilities that I would expect to be a part of the experience. That aside, the food in the mess is pretty good, the hostel staff are extremely friendly and the overall amenities are good.

4. The Academics

Someone posted - “faculty is temporary.”

The truth is, building a good faculty is a difficult proposition. It is something which requires years of effort and perhaps THE most important consideration while determining a students choice of law school. If you had the opportunity of studying under some fabulous teachers, washing your plate after lunch hardly seems like an issue.

5. The Mooting

NALSAR’s performance this year has been quite enviable. Frankly, I’m very disappointed by where NUJS stands in the moot rankings this year. But.

Mooting’s been bad for NUJS this year. But that’s just one year. I could write a whole new post on this altogether. Instead, all I’ll say is - Watch out for us next year!

Overall, life is good here, academics are good too. If anything, NUJS offers more options to us - we go to the library not because we have nothing else to do, but because a better faculty inspires us to. When not, oh, there’s just too much to do!

Legally interested 12 Apr 2012, 08:58

I have heard that the situation regarding the girl’s hostel has not changed even until 2012 and there are still three girls being accommodated in a twin-sharing room. Is that correct?

AnonymousLLB 20 Apr 2012, 05:52

As per the latest room allocation list, the current first years have all been allotted twin sharing in a room meant for two people (for the next academic year). Trust me, this room is quite spacious and comfortable for two people to live in. Imagine this: when we were three to a double occupancy room, it was cramped; but still slightly manageable. Therefore, twin sharing is very comfortable. However, the incoming batch will be asked to reside in the dormitories on the ground floor which will accommodate 40 odd people.
