CLAT preferences : NLS vs. NALSAR

tkk 14 Feb 2010, 16:00

Hey to all,

I was wondering about my CLAT preferences and would like to hear different opinions on whether I should rank NALSAR or NLS higher ie. as my first preference. This is what Ive managed to infer so far :

NALSAR Pros : better hostel, larger campus, better infrastructure overall.

Cons : proposed reservation for AP students might dilute quality, proximity (or lack of) to hyd city

NLS Pros : Reputation, library, IN bangalore city

Cons : infrastructure, hostels.

Can anyone add to these? faculty? internships? placements? overall college experience/fun factor?

All opinions are welcome even if they’re biased, as long as this thread doesn’t turn into a

NLS vs. NALSAR free -for-all :-P

Thanks a lot.

It has always been NALSAR v. NUJS maan.

NLS reins supreme. And if I were you I would prefer NUJS over NALSAR for now. The new NALSAR vice chancellor, though good is not good enough and NALSAR has thus stagnated a bit.

AnonymousLLB 14 Feb 2010, 21:17

i dont think from where nujs pops up lol

dude prefer nls first and then nalsar dr is a huge gap thn…

u gnna spend 5 yrs in a law clg dts a lot of time…

nls, nalsar are well established … n in case if you miss the top two then only go for nujs…

AnonymousLLB 14 Feb 2010, 23:01

Please don’t get into this age old debate.

NLS/NUJS/NALSAR are tier ONE law colleges according the LST. Even an organisation as experiene and knowledgeable as LST does not give rankings within the tier.

Also see student choices. These three are at the top. NLUJ and NLIU are also catching up. Please bring an end to this discussion.

Dear Sir,

While I understand your view point, you said it yourself it is an age old debate and that is exactly why in a rapidly changing law school scenario the prior notions of tier 1, tier 2 etc.. are breaking down. This is mainly do to many new factors that have come into play (eg. AP reservations), and that is why I am asking for opinions. When I make a choice about where I want to spend the next FIVE crucial years of my life, I just want it to be an informed, educated one. Is that too much to ask?

Thanks.

If anyone has anything to add, PLEASE feel free to do so, especially current students…

NUJS vs. NALSAR, sure but why? i need facts :)

AnonymousLLB 15 Feb 2010, 14:09

m myself in the second year at NLSIU and i personally believe that the only law college which competes with NLSIU is NALSAR…nalsar gt a gud bunch of students and a decent faculty…dis year around 15 students opted for nalsar instead of nls…bt nls is still the best…so choose between the two…both are class apart, its only that nls gt a fringe benefit of being the first national law school of india…nd obviously it gets the cream of the clat aspirants…nyways, i hv told u my perception of the top two…decide urself!

AnonymousLLB 16 Feb 2010, 00:09

the campus is 22 kms frm the city..but the bus service is good…da nearby locality, shameerpet has dhabas which serve edible food…the campus life is very cool bt the timings are a bit strict..u hv 2 be back 2 da campus by 7pm…but this is justified as the campus is too far frm the city…the mess sucks…they serve basically south indian food but for non vegetarians, the place is not too bad…dey serve non veg 5 days a week so its pretty okay…as far as faculty is concerned, nalsar gt sm of the greatest academicians… professor amita dhanda, prof Vk, the registrar, are well known people in the field legal education…the best part is the hostel life…it truly rocks!!! i hv been in boarding since 6th grade and the life here is the best i can say…and about the ap reservation thing, as far as i know, the reservation is horizontal and not vertical, its not gonna affect much..every year around 10-12 students from AP generally make it to nalsar on merit without any reservations so another 3-4 students cant dilute the standards…so dont worry much about it…so feel free to choose NLS or NALSAR, both will make ur life!!!

P.S. if you come to NALSAR, be prepared for the “POSITIVE INTERACTION” with the seniors..;)

AnonymousLLB 16 Feb 2010, 14:46

@ NALSARITE

Are you sure you feel like dat about NALSAR…No doubt the campus is briliant and hostel life is the best in the world… but to start with First the professors are not up to the standards as they used to be with Prof. Subba rao, Prof. ramakrishna, Prof. Errabi, Prof. Sandhya, Prof. KDR, Prof. Kalpana and Prof. Unni. The entire systems needs to be revamped keeping the career of a litigation or corporate lawyer in mind. Second since Ranbir Singh left the university lot of things have changed in the college especially in terms of ability to obtain sponsorships and funds.

To probable CLAT aspirant:

Well if you really wish to join any law school not just NALSAR well be ready to motivate yourself and make the best of the opportunities that you get which well be present. The class room teaching will not aid you in any manner for your future especially if you are seeking a corporate career except maybe contracts. Faculty is a problem in India and presently I would say NLS, NUJS and Jindal Law have the best faculties. Other colleges including NALSAR can boast of only one or two names but dats about it.

As for CLAT preparation for legal reasoning read the basic torts and contract priniciple available online.

tkk 16 Feb 2010, 14:57

Thanks a ton to NLS student, NALSARite and LOST NALSARITE.

Ive heard about this “positive interaction”, should I be looking forward to it or fearing it :-) ?

Yea, thanks I’m in possession of material for the legal reasoning segment. but to be honest I’m slightly more worried about the critical reasoning area, as my logic seems to deviate from the book’s logic more often than not.

Thanks again to all of you. and btw NALSAR placements going well this year too?

AnonymousLLB 16 Feb 2010, 15:31

ofcourse u shud be looking forward to the positive interaction! its fun!! nthng serious!! nd LOST NALSARITE, dont exaggerate the faculty problem, the problem is only wid the arts subjects, which hardly mould ur career…we still got the best professors…dont we have vepa sir?? moreover, students make a college nd professors…! nd clat aspirant, dont u worry about placements…if u “survive” here for five years, u’ll definitely get a decent job…the placement week has not yet begun nd more dan 45 students have already been placed…2 days back ITC recruited a few students, GAIL came 2 weeks back, AMARCHAND recruited 13 girls, few from the 4th year hv gt placed in foreign law firms…so placement is DEFINITELY not an issue!

AnonymousLLB 16 Feb 2010, 15:35

dont even think about JINDAL!i wud prefer HNLU or even AMITY over it! :D

AnonymousLLB 16 Feb 2010, 18:24

i still wont say faculty is that huge problem in nalsar, plus the situation can change overnight so please do not prefer any other colg over nlsiu and nalsar. This year nalsar have got a quality international relations teacher.

AnonymousLLB 16 Feb 2010, 20:46

I think the situation is pretty settled

NLSIU is the number one.

NALSAR number two.

NUJS number three.

NLIU bhopal and NLU jodhpur number four.

Many other institutions are coming up. The competition surely is increasing. But these five are the ones no one should give up. I recall my teacher at LST telling me that at NLUJ you will get everything you will get in NLSIU. It is just what you do in college that matters, not the brand (ie if you have a brand as good as these).

And yes some people will say that mabye GNLU or NLSD too deserve to be among top five. Yes, by all means. But let us give them some time.

Please don’t start mudslinging contests. May legal education in India prosper and grow :)

AnonymousLLB 17 Feb 2010, 11:39

pretty much correct. between NALSAR and NUJS and between NLU and NLIU, the decision often can boil down to city of choice / quality of life. You do pretty much the same things and opportunities are always there. But the no. of international / corporate placements are another factor that some students want to go by. Thus, GNLU and NLSD are still not on top of the list as of now and that’s d same reason as to why NLUJ and NLIU Bhopal come after NLS NALSAR and NUJS (although students from those colleges also get foreign jobs etc., the no. is lesser).

AnonymousLLB 17 Feb 2010, 11:43

NALSAR is VERY far from the city. It may help some people make a choice.

AnonymousLLB 20 Feb 2010, 08:24

Well… I agree that NLS is anytime better than NALSAR… but, if you get into anyone of them, nothing comparable to that.

Well… I wanted to know whether the said 20% reservation for AP students in NALSAR is from CLAT 2010 or not?

Thanks!

TriniTy 20 Feb 2010, 10:14

I don’t know if this is one of your considerations but I have seen NALSAR lawyers to be more commercial minded whereas NLS grads are more academically inclined.

AnonymousLLB 20 Feb 2010, 18:51

what kinda dumb logic is this!!???!!! nalsar has got 4 rhodes scholar in 1o years…doesnt it mean that its students are academically sound!

TriniTy 20 Feb 2010, 20:52

#485 - I was comparing the average NLS student vs. average NALSAR student.

Are you sure I said ‘academically sound’ ??? :p

AnonymousLLB 22 Feb 2010, 23:44

Im from NLS (not that it matters). And I have one thing to say. Get a life. Stop bickering .. This reminds me of the ‘my daddy is better than your daddy’ fights.

AnonymousLLB 23 Feb 2010, 18:28

NLS anyday simply because it is more than 20 years old. Every new college will have its good days and bad days. In your first 7-8 years of existence you might be good because u hv a good vc. But that doesnt mean u’ll continue to be the best in the next 10 years of existence. Most of the new colleges after NLS hv seen their share of going downhill after coming in with an initial bang.

I am not saying NLS has not had its bad days but at least with NLS u can be sure the college will not change significantly with the change of vice chancellor or change of administration. NLS as a system is old and mature enough to retain its identity even with a change in administration. Nalsar which is barely out of its formative stage has not yet attained the maturity to handle change- this was seen with the departure of their VC Prof Ranbir Singh.

Bottomline is that Nalsar has been on top in the last few years- There’s no guarantee they’ll be on top tomorrow- They are too young for us to be sure. NLS has been on top for the last twenty years. They will definitely continue being on top (if not the best) for the next 10 years.

AnonymousLLB 24 Feb 2010, 23:44

anyday??? u must be kidding!!! the myth that nls is number one “anyday” is busted now!! the recent mpl standings testify that…so dont say “anyday”!

AnonymousLLB 28 Feb 2010, 13:21

Notwithstanding mpl rankings I’d say anyday because the mpl rankings only reflect the mooting performance of colleges this year. I am sure u wont choose a college based on how it performs in moots in one particular year

AnonymousLLB 28 Feb 2010, 23:08

I know for a fact that in the current NALSAR first year, about 12 ppl who were in the top 50 ranks of clat, gave NALSAR as their first preference and came here.. they could have easily got NLS..

The scenario is slowly changing..

(Please refer to the NALSAR list of clat 2009 to validate this)

AnonymousLLB 1 Mar 2010, 02:20

Just because some students giving CLAT preferred Nalsar over NLS it does not mean Nalsar is better. It just shows that many law aspirants writing CLAT are either misinformed or there is plain lack of awareness amongst them .

AnonymousLLB 1 Mar 2010, 12:37

lack of awareness!!??!!the situation is changing now !! accept the fact…even india today acknowledged the fact in 2008…!!!! the reality is in front of everyone!!!

AnonymousLLB 1 Mar 2010, 16:32

India Today acknowledged it. But that was when Ranbir Singh, Ghanshyam Singh and co. were implementing their plans in full swing.

With their and other faculty member’s departure NALSAR’s reputation has taken a hit. Many good faculty too have left. 20% reservation (though makes very little difference) too has been a setback. The successor VC I hear is failing to fit in those huge shoes.

Someone had pointed out the history of competition between NLS/NALSAR/NUJS. I very much concur.

Earlier NLS was THE thing. NALSAR and NUJS soon began to catch up. NALSAR came for a nose to nose finish. But now NLS again is on top. Followed by NALSAR/NUJS**. Now again its more of NUJS v. NALSAR than NLS v. NALSAR.**

But no one can ignore the brilliant achievements of nalsar in moots and otherwise and of NUJS in the research field. Placements of both the colleges have been as good as NLS. So…good luck to all the colleges. and also to other superb colleges we have in nliu, nluj, gnlu.

AnonymousLLB 1 Mar 2010, 18:26

thats a moronic argument…just because ranbir singh and ghanshyam singh left the institution u cant say so…nalsar is as good as it was in their times, rather it has got better…it needed a start wich both of dem gave it…like madhav menon gave to nls, now nalsar is on its own…nd it no longer depends on the faculty…even madhav menon left nls to establish nujs, but did it affect NLS?? NO!!

P.S the ap reservation is horizontal and not vertical so it doesnt affect much!

AnonymousLLB 1 Mar 2010, 20:00

NALSAR was a one man show man. Ranbir Singh gave birth to the institution and tended to it till it became big and strong. It still is big and strong but without its caretaker, a bit weak.

NLS and NUJS since their inception had VCs changing in a couple of years and thus don’t have such problems.

Its a perfectly valid argument. When great leaders leave, organisations do suffer! As simple as that!

AnonymousLLB 1 Mar 2010, 20:41

nalsar has a perfect caretaker…veer singh is as good as ranbir singh…come 2 nalsar nd den u’ll knw dat nalsar is as good as it used to be!

AnonymousLLB 1 Mar 2010, 21:40

it is really not an argument to say how a institution is dependent on one man..

seriously, if you have another argument then be vocal..

What is the whole talk about Ranbir Singh and how NALSAR is handicapped without him..

it gives such an impression-” we cant find enough flaws about NALSAR, lets just concentrate on its ex-VC..”

Give some more strong arguments than that..

(I am sure you guys can do better, keep trying)

AnonymousLLB 5 Mar 2010, 01:27

Oi NALSAR wannabe troubleshooter! You don’t have an argument, say that. Don’t say the other guy’s argument is as “moronic” as yours. And let’s face it. NLS has a name, and deservedly so. NALSAR too is a good institution, and is fast catching up with NLS, but for now it is NLS and not NOT nalsar.

and you know that nalsar became what it is today because of that ranbir singh. true, that the institution is not entirely dependent on him. but even then, as others pointed out, some of the best faculty nalsar had too left, and that definitely had an impact.

Know what you are talking about. learn to make informed arguments. Don’t tell me you are from Nalsar, cuz they would actually argue better than you would. No offence though, ‘mate! Cheer up.

AnonymousLLB 5 Mar 2010, 20:39

INSECURITY..huh??? NLS PEOPLE GET A LIFE!! AND FACE IT!!! FACE THE FACTS!!!

AnonymousLLB 6 Mar 2010, 03:55

Face the facts indeed! Go make up some and post it here. We will take a printout and stick it right up there! Go get a life, dude!

AnonymousLLB 6 Mar 2010, 18:24

why r u guys fighting?? it is a well known fact now that NLUJ is d best!

AnonymousLLB 6 Mar 2010, 21:53

NO NO! CNLU is the best. oh wait! Lady shriram is the best for law!

or is it Stephen’s?

joy.joy14 12 Mar 2010, 16:14

Can anyone tell ,how is the GLC College in Mumbai…

What is the Admission Process to it?

LegalPoet 12 Mar 2010, 17:51

A very frank opinion:

GLC was legendary. Today its not.It should not be an option for any serious law aspirant. GLC, today is a shadow of its past. Even the shadow is very very faint.

This article here explains that well http://www.jammag.com/careers/n/showart.php?art\_id=247

LegallyIndia too carried an article on CLAT

http://www.legallyindia.com/20100212486/Law-schools/clat-a-retrospective-trip-down-memory-lane

which spoke on how a student who had spent TWO YEARS in GLC preferred to come to NUJS.

So he is presently in 1st year at NUJS, while in GLC he would be in 3rd year. While this might be an extreme case scenario people are willing to sacrific a year in colleges like GLC, ILS, Symbi, Christ, Amity etc. to make it NLS, NUJS and NALSAR…

However GLC is still legendary. Legendary for its pathetic infrastructure, legendary for examination goof-ups and legendary for a course structure which is meant for the previous generation.

Some good points too are there: extremely low fees, possiblity of interning ‘after college hours’ in good law firms which translate into jobs too. Also, GLC still inspires awe among some and still rocks in moots. And it is in Mumbai!

Guest 3 May 2010, 17:33

nls remains the best by far…

AnonymousLLB 17 May 2011, 05:06

guys, guys guys…what are we trying to prove… i know for sure that its the students that make the institution as you have problem of good faculty every where. as far as student quality is concerned both colleges have more or less same quality of students be it in terms of academics, mooting sports, scholarship, or placements its almost the same . so its not about nals is better or nalsar i guess its about what sought of lifestyle one prefers.

AnonymousLLB 17 May 2011, 05:13

nls you guys forgot how badly you guy were beaten by nlsar cricket team.

and yes we have seen your stupid sports fest where you have all your lucky looser nonsense.,,,

AnonymousLLB 17 May 2011, 09:50

I’m from NLUD.

And I’d say NLSIU any day.

Unless a campus figures very high on your list of priorities.

(And believe you me, if you’re gonna live there for 5 years, the campus matters)

AnonymousLLB 17 May 2011, 11:39

Campus is very important, but so is it’s proximity to the city/station/airport etc.

NLS is 30min away from the city centre and “happening” places and Nagarbhavi, where it’s located is developing really fast and well. We have dominos, pizza hut, 3 or 4 chinese eat outs (not shacks or dhabas), and at least 5-6 others like KFC in a 10min radius.

While admitting that the NALSAR campus is truly amazing, I think the NLS one is better located and, while smaller, not at all small in an absolute sense.

AnonymousLLB 17 May 2011, 14:47

Once upon a time, when things were nice, and the number of NLUs small; the rankings were:

1. NLSIU

2. NUJS/NALSAR

3. NLIU/NLUJ

Madhava Menon, the phenomenon, left NUJS. Ranbir Singh, an emerging phenomenon ran NALSAR and ran it very well. The rankings than read:

1. NLSIU

2. NALSAR

3. NUJS

4. Others.

Ranbir Singh left NALSAR. He took all the good faculty. He took the good administrators.

NALSAR was never run by anyone else. Who would replace Ranbir Singh? NALSAR’s success was, to some extent, personality driven. Who’d be the new personality who’d run NALSAR?

Veer Singh came to NALSAR. Veer Singh is, politely said, a […] guy. Without good faculty, without good managers, NALSAR slipped down.

MP Singh came to NUJS. He recruited the best faculty from everywhere. Three faculties from NALSAR itself. People from NLSIU and NUJS too joined NUJS as faculties. Rhodes scholars, Oxford graduates, IP studs!

Students too were an inspired lot. Big international moot wins. Big law firm placements. An entrepreneurial culture. “Instead of joining a law firm, lets start a law firm”, was the ethos.

Add to it the “Salt Lake City”, the NUJS home-ground. A fantastic, happening, culturally supreme, fun place to be in. When you are young, this is the sort of place which you want to be in.

Contrast that to “Shameerpet Lake”, the NALSAR home-ground. Its far far away from Hyderabad. Its not even in Hyderabad. And its not fun! Definetely not with a Veer Singh in. :D

The ranking now stands:

1. NLSIU

2. NUJS

3. NALSAR

4. Others.

---

The debate always has been and always will be. NUJS v. NALSAR.

NLSIU is a grand old daddy. Light talks and anonymous comments won’t disturb its place in the hierarcy.

AnonymousLLB 17 May 2011, 17:14

Totally agree!

No one can step into the shoes of RS. Trust me, Nalsar students cannot wait for Veer Singh to leave. As for NUJS, MP Singh has taken them to a zenith which can be attributed to the brilliant faculty he’s brought in.

NLSIU no doubt is still at the helm but it’s more to do with it’s really wide alumni base. Give NALSAR and NUJS five more years and they’ll be giving it a run for it’s money!

As for NLSIU v. NALSAR, I really don’t know why the question crops up! The real ‘versus’ is NUJS v. NALSAR, in which clearly the former is leading the race at the moment.

AnonymousLLB 17 May 2011, 17:28

@Anonymous and Completely Neutral - Trust me Guys, you are going to get abused by NALSAR guys very soon :P How the hell in the world did u dare to compare it with NUJS.

Dont you know, it is the best. Even then NLSIU. LOL :P

AnonymousLLB 17 May 2011, 17:30

ok guys if campus and location makes an institution number 1 then lets see what nalsar has to offer its students.

though its 30km away from the city but the campus is spreed across 60 acres and it has got everything that a residential campus needs be it gym, play ground bb/ badminton/ tennis court nalsar has it. it has by far the best campus among the law schools. now lets talk about its surroundings. nalsar has a massive lake where one can go fishing and it has a very nice area for tracking or jogging. also nalsar has got a very nice fitness cultural. anyways if people think they need a city fun then worry not coz ul find great luxury resort and its not very expensive. so guys all that jaz of this its buit in no mans land is really over hyped. even though its little difficult to stay coz of its jungle nature but guys nalsar will make u adventures. think like this rest all the law schools are in the city whats the difference but nalsar is different.

AnonymousLLB 17 May 2011, 22:39

So now that MP Singh is running NLU Delhi, should NLU D be ahead of NUJS and Nalsar outside of the CLAT preferences?

AnonymousLLB 18 May 2011, 06:27

nalsar o nalsar why do you have so many flies

so many pretty eyes

whats wrong with all the guys

clat aspirant 17 Jan 2012, 11:30

i have heard that law student have hectic schedules, too much to study, they dont have life, etc. is that true????

m a clat aspirant nd m appearing for clat this year..m a fun loving person..

so if i get into good law schools this year..will that be bad…?

do students at nalsar/nlsiu have life full of masti? they go to clubs or not?

if i get into law school i dont want to study like a study freak student…

so can you clear mah doubts bout law schools plzzzz.. :) :)

AnonymousLLB 23 Feb 2012, 20:04

What about JGLS?

I mean, if you subtract the fees from the equation, then, would Jindal Global Law be a good option?

AnonymousLLB 17 May 2012, 13:50

You’d anyday want to pick a National Law University over JGLS.

JGLS is in SONIPAT. FAR away from civilisation man.
