NLIU vs NLUJ vs SLS Pune vs GNLU
6 Jun 2011, 09:24
Guys
It is currently between GNLU Gandhinagar, Symbiosis Pune, NLIU Bhopal and NLU Jodhpur for me.
Please, please
Give me a brief idea about what to expect in each of the above 4.
I have a good chance in all 4 of them,
PS: Gnlu because people say it is the fastest emerging law school, and well I live in Gujarat too, not a strong point to base my choice on, yet it is in my list.
PSS: Symbiosis because it is the best ‘private’ law school. And I have given my GD&PI. Can you please tell me about the banes of landing up in a private law school as compared to the NLUs? I mean do they not get to participate in national meets, moots or sports events?
Sincerely

I think it should be either GNLU or NLU Jodhpur.. Gnlu s the fastest growing law school.. just look at their placement statistics… on the other hand.. NLU Jodhpur is equally good.. Symbiosis.. below par compared to these institutions.. NLIU is good but it has locational disadvantages…
Hey Anon,
I’d say it depends on your priorities.
But as for making a choice if you get into all 4,
I’d say go for:
NLU-J, GNLU, NLIU, SLS
This is purely academics based. Includes the best faculty etc.
Now,
Do remember, if you also plan to have a lot of fun and a ‘rocking’ college life, then the order should tilt slightly. It may sound silly, but 5 years is a really really long time and it gets frustrating being in one place for so long especially if its a small town with prohibition.
NLU-J is doing well and the hands down winner but remember it is in a place some 30+ kms from Jodhpur, so you may not have the best time there if ‘fun’ is one of the top criteria.
GNLU is ranked second because it is coming up really well and plus since you’re from Gujarat, it will be ideal for you.. No chances of homesickness etc. But do remember prohibition and hardly any non vegetarian food options.. (None on campus now anyway)
NLIU bhopal is third because its an NLU so ranks above SLS and also it has a beautiful campus and good faculty. But again, it is in Bhopal. See that. It matters where you are. Truly does.
SLS is in Pune. Yes its a private law school, maybe one of the best ones. The campus is pathetic and non existent (Can vouch for it, been there) No hostel facility. Expensive living there! But. The crowd is amazing. Pune is beyond amazing. The faculty is good. The placements are alright, not so great this year. See Bar and Bench for more. You’ll have an amazing amazing time there. Guaranteed.
Therefore, if you want the best 5 years of your life, choose SLS. But work yourself to the bones. I’d personally pick NLU-J though.
The Private schools do get to participate, provided they are invited. Symbiosis and Amity are definitely invited everywhere. So that’s not an issue. Why NLU over a Private University:
1) government patronage. So they get huge amounts as funds etc.
2) Jobs. Govt. companies and PSU’s will recruit from there. So higher chances of getting a job.
3) Recognised. No chance that they will be de-recognised or have their affiliation removed anytime soon.
4) More accountable to the public.
5) More transperancy (See above)
6) Usually more cost-effective, but not always.
7) NOT a money making gimmick organisation run on the whims and fancies of a dictator.
(Wait! Who am I kidding.. 4,5,6 and 7) happen in NLU’s too. But the chances are really dim as compared to Private universities.
Do NOT go to symbiosis. The placements have been less than 40%. Out of 40% more than 30% have gone to low end LPOs.
NLUJ
NLIU Bhopal
GNLU (see the placements carefully. only amarchand has recruited big. otherwise, small law firms and local gujarat companies have been the recruiters. the faculty is very average).
Recruitment stories on LegallyIndia and performances of the students in the domestic and international arena as far as competitions and peer review is concerned I would suggest you follow this order of prefrence:
1. NLU-Jodhpur
2. NLIU, Bhopal
3. GNLU Gujarat
4. Symby
First of all, NLUJ is not 30+ kms away from Jodhpur.. its just 10 kms from the railway station.. and it is probably one of the best NLUs to have fun in…
Ya, Really? I’ve been there. Definitely not 10 minutes away from the railway station. And the closest city is Jodhpur. Pune over jodhpur for fun, anyday I’d say. And I did rank NLU-J number one ac/ to Anon’s list if only you’d read carefully.
1. NLUJ
2. NLIU
3. GNLU
4. SLS
and I agree that except AMSS all other major recruiters are local PSUs…and I can guarantee that even AMSS won’t hire more than 2-3 students in future. Also, NLUJ is the best in academics, placements and fun…just choose NLUJ and you won’t regret.
NLU-J would be my advice.
I frankly rate NLU-J and GNLU equally, but you live in Gujarat, so I recommend getting away from home, growing up and learning to fend for yourself.
Personal advice, Please dont go to nlu-j and become a trade law nerd.. I get that it is an ‘emerging’ field but dont go into it cause everyone else is :P
If you do choose to come to gnlu, look me up and i’ll gladly help you out :)
NLU Jodhpur is not very far from the city. It is 15 mins from the Railway station. The main reason why you should choose NLUJ over GNLU or NLIU are the state reservations. NLIU and GNLU have state reservations which reduces diversity within a batch of students. NLUJ is more cosmopolitan.
NLIU Bhopal your first preference.
1. Just 10 minutes away from National Judicial Academy with Prof. Mohan Gopal taking regular courses for NLIU students.
2. Bhopal is amongst India’s fastest growing cities. Check Residex of the Home Ministry which calls it the fastest growing city in real-estate.
3. You might go to GNLU.. but it’s still a new college.
4. Jodhpur can only be as good.
5. Check last year’s LegallyIndia analysis of top CLAT law school choices.
NLIU Bhopal’s National General List + State General List ended higher than Jodhpur’s National List. Making it the 4th most preferred college. State People getting higher ranks than Jodhpur’s National Last Rank. That speaks volumes.
1. India’s First & only Cyber Law Center with Cyber Forensics Department has already started.
Too enhance ur choice and alleviate ur confusion, i would add an entrant to ur list. The following in the pecking order:
NLU-J
NLIU/HNLU/GNLU
SLS Pune
NLIU has been sliding down slightly. And the progress that its made since 1997 is shadowed by the progress HNLU and GNLU have made since 2004 each.Im particularly impressed by HNLU and its placements this year. But, nonetheless, NLU-J wins this comparison.
hey,
frankly if u take my advice, choose symbi…although the college has no campus and a pretty average infrastructure, but it lets u be!! frankly i have closely monitored my brother’s life who is working as an advocate in a litigation firm, and the life is hell…and this is so everywhere may it be litigation or corporate…so a fun college life is more important than anything else because by the end of it you should not have any regrets…we go for every cultural and sports fest there is…our annual cultural fest this year was the biggest fest ever in pune and it was just the 3rd year of its inception… we do everything one should do in his college life and by the end of it a month before our exams we buck our asses up and study like maniacs…and frankly our syllabus is as extensive as any NLU… the city being pune is another added advantage…we have very relaxed college timings and being inside the city helps us pursue our hobbies or work in NGO’s or even do a simoultaneous course like a diploma or a CS…i am interning in a firm and trust me it is nothing like wht u learn in any law school…u have to learn everything afresh…noone is going to teach u all tht in any law school…therefore barring the top 3, ie, NLSIU, NALSAR and NUJS it doesnt make any difference…
Its true that symbi doesnt give great placements…the reason being tht very few students sit for placements…and it is also true that maximum students from symbi get PPOs(Pre-placement offers)…the firm im interning has two senior partners from symbi…so guys who are from national law schools- ur notion that we dont do well in life is absolutely wrong…infact people at the bar hate NLU students the reason being none of ull ever go to the bar and even if u practice at the bar u enter the same with a stiff upper lip that is not warranted of a junior advocate…all of ull go towards luring placement offers of corporate and legal advisory and the latter in my opinion is a pretty degrading job devoid of any challenge whatsover…we work on our own without anyones help…get jobs on our own…and eventually make it big…as said by our principal “we are a college not a placement agency”
Im sorry my friend my advice ran into hundereds of words but someone really had to stand up for symbi sometime against the arrogance of NLUs…
so concluding…i dont see how one can survive for 5 years in Jodhpur, Bhopal or Gandhinagar and still claim to have had fun in life…in this matter symbi truly rocks and pune makes it rock!!
see, it depends on you.
if u want to stay near home, choose gnlu.
if u want to get the best from amongst your list, choose nlu-j
if u dont get nlu-j, choose gnlu.
with narendra modi’s personal patronage, gnlu has a brighter future than bhopal.
dont go to symbiosis.
u can have fun anywhere in the world.
this notion that u cant have fun in NLUs is ridiculous.
watch this if u have any doubt -http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QPgBhQ0Wd5I
best of luck.
frankly no law school can ever guarantee u a “brighter future”…it is all on u…this is the fundamental difference between law and other professional courses like engineering and management…NlUs will make u sit and force u to study and research whereas these are things which u will have to do it on your own as a lawyer…once u enter a law firm noone is going to help u with anything …thts the differnce between NLU and symbi…we are not forced to work…we do everthing ourselves…and quite frankly if u want to get into a pure legal practice dont even by mistake go to an NLU!!!! none of them ever go to the bar
and yeh i can see how much fun NLU students have…none of them are ever present in any cultural festival…and mind u im not saying this because i dindt get through any NLU…i cracked clat and got through GNLU and i also got through NLU delhi…but i made a wise choice and took symbi and frankly im having the most awesome time here…atleast im not in a jail!!
This is for the arrogant prick who is supposedly ensuring the topic starter that AMSS won’t recruite more than 2-3 people from GNLU next year. Who are you to state things like that in such a matter-of-factly tone ? Cyril Shroff ?
I’ll just wait for another year for the recruitment stats to be up on the internet and to find your foot deep in your own mouth :)

This is for the person who is too blind to see the truth behind GNLU’s placement…I’ll be more than happy if I am proved wrong…but that’s future we are talking…at present trends clearly show that major recruiters in GNLU are local PSUs…so Mr. I know I am wrong but I am just too adamant and stupid to admit it…go get a life…your blind love for GNLU won’t make it the best law school in the country…use your brain and stop criticizing others just for the sake of it. :)
listen mr. anonymous, the thing about this nlu vs symbi debate is that of quality of the students in the institution. frankly speaking, i almost died laughing once when a friend of mine from nliu bhopal actually thought that mla’s are in rajya sabha.. hahahaha. jokes apart, dude the thing that is to be understood is that the quality of the best in symbi is definitely equal to that of any law school in the country, secondly, you can be stupid and be pompous about doing well in one particular exam on one day but dude who r u kidding huuuh? dude listen, i assure you this is not a case of sour grapes, i scored 139 in clat last year, which wudve gotten me to nliu bhopal and i did get through to nlu delhi too. but there are a lot of things that you have to keep in mind while choosing where you are gonna spend half decade of your life… a place which where your academic ring masters are gonna force you to go through a system which i admit would have the best infrastructure possible THOUGH IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE WITH NO OTHER LIFE? or a place where there are gonna be many retards around you who you know have paid there way in, into a place which someone said “has no infrastructure” but a place which lets you be, with a great academic structure of legal education which DOESN’T FORCE BUT ENCOURAGES YOU TO ACHIEVE EXCELLENCE. AND TO THE POMPOUS RETARD WHO SAID SYMBI HAS NO INFRASTRUCTURE ” WE HAVE THE CITY OF PUNE FOR A CAMPUS AND WE UNLIKE MOST OF YOU, WE ARENT IN THE MIDDLE OF F&^%&KING NOWHERE.I AM NOT SAYING CHOOSE SYMBI OVER NLSIU OR NALSAR BECAUSE, I ASSURE YOU, I WOULD HAVE CHOSEN ABOVE SYMBI BUT SYMBI PROVIDES A VERY DIFFERENT FUTURE WHICH CAN BE EQUALLY BRIGHT, JUST THIS TIME, YOU WOULD BE THE ONE CHOOSING IT. CHILL. GO LISTEN TO SOME MUSIC DUDE :) AND HAHAHAHA AT MR. ANONYMOUS WHO PUT UP A VIDEO OF “JUST CHILL AT NLIU” HAHAHAHAHA DUUUUDE REALLY???? ARE YOU KIDDING ME??!!! HAHAHA LIVING IN A FOREST HAS DEFINITELY MADE YOU FORGET WHAT REAL FUN LOOKS LIKE!!! HAHAHAHAHA DUDE!!
Hi,
Please dont mislead people. In the name of freedom you cant tell people to chose Symbi and inturn spoil there lives by just having fun. If you can do better at symbi its good, but overall you know everyone cant be talented like you who find fun only in bars, pubs, etc of Pune and not in Forest Reserve.
Moreover your argument on freeedom is follish because if going for freedom and fun would have been the case, you should suggest people to even join open schools from childhood.
Dont use public forum to spoil future of youths…
let them choose whatever they want…
Cheers
Lawyer
This ‘Symbi guy’ is so much into fun and other pompous stuff that he couldn’t even see that the video wasn’t ‘chill at NLIU’ but ‘at NLSIU’.
I would definitely advise all those people who just want to party hard and harder to go to SLS. It rocks.
But if unfortunately someone wants to study seriously and have a bright future thereafter, then alas, you’ll end up being in an NLU.
Its time to face the realities Symbi boy :|
Mr. Lawyer…please point to me where i even mentoined the idea of fun to be bars and pubs…and mind u the maximum drugs problem is in ur most revered NALSAR…but that doesnt take the credibility away from that college…
More than to defend symbi…im here to show u NLS arrogant heads your ur place.
no mention to the top three as they are undoubtdly the best…but what the hell are NLU-J and GNLU?? they are just kiddie law schools who have verry recently gained some recognition…kindly stop gloating over a tag of NLU…although our own college has no such tag but we are no less than any of ull in intellect…and this applies to all NLSs including the top three- please keep ur feet at the ground rather than on cloud 9…and mind u MR. lawyer not just a few of us but ALL OF US DO WELL!!!! This is a humble request to all u not so humble NLU students to stop misleading people about symbiosis and pump some air out of ur heads…look into ur own pants before pointing out others infections!!!!!
Well the anonymous National Law School brats, its u guys who need to face the realities more than anyone else… u need to know that there exists a world beyond ur colej boundaries, moot court competitions, paper presentations, and publications… and if u fail in realizing that then don’t worry u will know it when somebody from Symbiosis, ILS or any other law college which u guys consider non-existent will kick ur ass on the bar or even in corporate for that matter…
So, better come out of ur illusory world before others give u a feel of the real one… take the advice, its always better to do things on ur own.
Let everyone decide for herself or himself where one wants to study. By any standard a National Law School is a National Law school. If it is new today in Ranchi, within a few years it will take shape and become something of repute. Symbiosis is no bad. It has its merits and has come up very well. Therefore, let us not unnecessarily debate about where one should go or not. Let the students(and their parents) decide it.
Thank you!!1
all we want is an end to baseless defamation of our college by people from NLUs
comment much appreciated :)
Wow. You guys are amazing.
I got into all Four of these colleges.
I chose NLU Jodhpur above the NLIU, GNLU and Symbi.
Yes. Your comments influenced me. I admit it. And most of you have been fair with the pros and cons. Amazing insight.
That Symbi v NLIU (or all national law schools) fight was not very helpful, though thanks for trying.
I have a lot of advantages at Pune and Gandhinagar, (Home plus army cantt quarters)
But I would rather go with peer review and expert opinion rather than gimmicks like India today and outlook rankings. I mean c’mon Public voting for best law school rankings!?
look at this stupid link: http://specials.indiatoday.com/survey/bestcollegespoll2011/colleges\_results.jsp?survey\_id=1010115
GNLU has 1061 votes
NLSIU has 51 votes
You get the idea.
Also, I read up about the tandon committee’s impending decision over Symbi’s deemed status.
http://www.sakaaltimes.com/SakaalTimesBeta/20100316/5722378841322252290.htm
I would rather not risk it.
Bhopal’s reservation put me off to no limit. I scratched it out immediately.
Thanks a ton guys,
I appreciate the sincere help.
Anuj
hey … fee structure in nliu bhopal is higest amongst all national schools …why is it so???????
even nls banglore nalasar doesn’t have such!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! then why nliu bhopal??????????????????
Hey Parth,
Check the list again. Luthra, JSA, Trilegal, LKS, Platinum- what more do you want. And don’t forget that we had highest no. of recruitment this year. Second, what makes you say that AMSS won’t hire more then 2-3 people in future? First get your facts clear and then make a statement about MY law school.
And to the Anonymous: NLU-J, GNLU, NLIU, Symbi…Any Day. After 5 years, all it matters is to get placed. And NLU-J could guarantee you that. Infact, if you are good, you might land up in a foreign firm. Crowd is equally good. And Jodhpur has loads of hangout options, so if you are getting it, go for it.
^^ Thank you !
FYI, 2 ppo’s from AMSS Delhi already. And this is before the campus recruitment has even begun.
There goes your prediction Parth, like i said..Foot in mouth !
couldnt put my sef through the pain of reading everything, but just so you know, something that i have seen in my law school and i also know it holds true for the other top 5 or 6 nlus in the country is that 50% of the people who are in there cleared symbi and then decided to chuck it for a better option and the other 50% didnt give symbi at all, in effect symbi has to come out with 3 to 5 lists to fill their seats, so now it leads me to wonder who finally joined symbi.
First of all guys , please remember there are some students and professors in each law of these law schools working hard to do the best in the field. All the above law schools are in the top 10 out of 1100+ law schools of the country. No person has any right to pass any defamatory comments on any law school. This not a competition or race where the top 3 ranking law school will win and all the institution from 4th on-wards will have no future. It is not the the 240 lawyers of top 3 but combined effort of all will be required to justice to this noble profession who s services will be required by a nation of 1.22 billion people.
Choose wisely after careful consideration after confirming the authenticity of information provider.
You guys leave me to wonder as what is so special in the National Law Schools if they haven’t taught you that writing defamatory comments on a public blog can land you up in a litigation and the court to decide that it is a defamatory language. Excuse my knowledge of law or for that matter that I am in the industry, it leaves me to wonder that in Legally India all I can see is defamatory remarks and competition between law schools and also National Law Schools snubbing the others in the name of their college. I would personally suggest my fellow colleagues at TATA, SUZLON, ALMT Legal, AZB Partners, DUA Associates, CLP Group, FOX MANDAL, and Kocchar & Co. to give a second thought while visiting National Law Schools for their recruitment drive. Do you guys even realise that we, people in the industry read the blogs here in Legally India. What an apathy towards decency in replying to public blogs. @ Legally India Moderator, kindly screen defamatory remarks made against any college in this blog or else Legally India could be at the risk of entering into a litigation. If these comments continue we may have to launch a PIL against you guys.
Dear Arrogant Prick,
Well its been almost an year since any discussion took place on this forum. I just realized that I was supposed to make you feel happy by proving you wrong. AMSS recruited 8 from GNLU and Trilegal 9 :)
http://www.legallyindia.com/201204242767/Law-schools/2013-recruitment-day-zero-at-nalsar-gnlu-nliu-amarchand-trilegal-hire-30
So please, use your words carefully in the future. Never know when they come back to haunt you :P
well i am appearing for clat and symbi this year..and this forum hasnt helped me in any way.
Fair enough. What are you wondering about specifically?
In short, there’s no real answer - you’ve got to make up your own mind depending on your gut feeling and the information at your disposal. The oldest CLAT schools have some advantages, but likewise sometimes the location could be a clincher or what you want out of your career. Litigation locally? Or a top law firm job?
I think give CLAT the best shot you can and then take a call when you have options on the table?
After reading to an interesting debate of symbi v. nlu and also in my personal opinion..i shall say that definately the top three nlu’s are the best law schools in the country…but than if we talk about colleges starting from the fourth rank, i will definately suggest SLS,PUNE. It is the best private college of the country. The curriculum is way beyond awesome..placements are also good..Being situated in Pune makes it perfect..the only thing which lacked in the college was its infrastructure..but even that tag(of having a bad infrastructure) is no more because symbiosis has constructed its new campus in viman nagar,pune..which shall be starting from 2014…
I think a student who really wants to study can study in any environment, however the life of colleges of having fun n enjoyment is also necessary.and for such thing, one needs to be associated with coleges like symbiosis wherein a student who really wants to study and enjoy his college life can go beyond no doubts..
‘NLIU has been sliding down slightly!’
I wonder which part of the world you live in. NLIU has been performing very well in all arenas and activities associated with law school with very active participation in and especially ADR.
There is no basis for your presumption.
