i know the article is by an nujs grad; that is why i asked an nlsiu’ opinion. btw the article seems to be very intelligent; it values things which one should value but generally doesn’t.

If you are interested in experimenting a few things and also being in a slightly relaxed atmosphere where you can dedicate a lot of time doing a wide-host of extra-curricular activities like moot, debates or exploring out-of-the box innovative idead there is no other place law-school better than NUJS at the moment. You will get reasonably good academic curriculum and lot of time to explore what your hear tells you.

However if you are keen on achieving a high standard of academic excellence, then NALSAR and more inclined to do better career-wise for the next five years then NALSAR is the place. (I am not saying that NUJS will not let you achieve academic excellence also, but Nalsar is slighlty better in this regard). Hope tihs makes things clearer.

NUJS has a built in environment for entrepreneurs. It is NOT AT ALL lenient; ask first and second years who have to do year round research…writing about 2000 words per week.

But there is this independence and dynamism in the student community. And the facts speak for themselves: Rohit Das’s PXV law firm, Ashish Arun’s ORP LPO, Ramanuj Mukherjee’s iPleaders a legal risk management firm and Tanuj Kalia’s Lexbiosis.

Noojies not only get jobs but they create them in big numbers!

At the same time NLS has a trimester system and doesn’t leave breathing space to innovate, explore and start-up. Though one NLS guy has started a food joint which is a damn cool concept.

NLS also scores highly on foreign law firm placements. 8 of its students were placed where at NUJS around 4 people were placed. So, well, there you are…

I am a 1st year NUJS student and I can tell you-that writing 2000 words a week is no big deal. We all end up starting the 2000 word essays on the last night. But of course if you want to follow your heart and be an entrepreneur and start early when you are in college- then NUJS is the place to be in!

Being a legal recruiter and having visited and interacted with current students and passouts of NLSIU and NUJS; I can easily say that both colleges are neck to neck in terms of student quality, placements and infrastructure.

While presently the NUJS faculty is much better it might be not the case in next 2-3 years (who knows). NLSIU scores in overall reputation but again NALSAR and NUJS are giving it a tough run for the money.

NUJS is in the heart of the city and the students there get opportunities like Startup Saturdays, Blogging events in the posh salt lake city. This has lead to many NUJS launching their own business ventures.

NLSIU is by far the best. If you’ve qualified for both take NLSIU without thinking twice. Don’t read all that tosh about trimesters being strenuous or NALSAR having a better business spirit.

But that is the hot question of the week: Why is NLSIU the best, when there is no visible reason for it to be?

NALSAR scores equally on faculty, placements, student quality and location. Infrastructure is much better.

Why choose NLSIU when NALSAR can offer you better infrastructure and NUJS better faculty and location?

Why is no one from NLSIU answering this? I think there is no reason why CLAT aspirants should consider NLS as their 1st choice.

Actually NALSAR or NUJS should be the 1st choice. NALSAR with better infrastructure and NUJS with better location & faculty.

Old Institution is the only thing which makes NLSIU preferable.

I have seen students at NLSIU spending their most of the time in useless activities. Many of them start their project just 2-3 days before the submission ( Mentioning this because it happens everywhere, and I earlier thought NLSIU is an exception but it is not )

They also copy paste it, and get projects from the friends staying in some other universities.

And, as the first CLAT batch would pass out. One would be able to see more declining difference between various NLUs, and NLUD would be a tough competitor.

I have seen people from NLS commenting “We are the Best”, but When I ask why ? They say You are challenging our supremacy? Ask everyone.

This is only a myth.

I don’t think NLU Delhi’s stifling culture will allow them to succeed. 18-23 year olds if allowed to go out of the campus only from 4-6 pm in the evening is just ridiculous! More than anything, it tells you about the mindset of the institution: stifling, restrictive, overbearing and overly paternalistic.

More than anything else, one should value independence, freedom and those values. NLUD is going counter to these. The development of the students will be impaired and retarded.

NLSIU has always valued these values and it remains the best. As far as copying in projects goes, it’s a malaise which affects every college in India, not just law schools.

Simply saying “NLSIU is the best”, “NLSIU is supreme” would be an absurd argument.

Does it provide better placements than NALSAR and NUJS ? Only in Foreign Firms, not in National Firms.

Does it have better Faculty? No, NUJS Faculty is better

Doest it have good infra ? No, NALSAR has better Infra

Alumni Base. Yes, it has but NALSAR and NUJS are also making their Alumi base strong year by year.

Values Freedom? No, NUJS students have more freedom

NALSAR too gives Rhodes Scholars.

Then, what makes it supreme ? The only reason I find in the old institution

I think even the foreign law firms take people from the trinity of NLS-NALSAR-NUJS.

This time they took 8 from NLS, 4 from NALSAR and 4 from NUJS. So even foreign firms are realising that there is less difference between these three.

The person gave their choices - NUJS or NLSIU. I don’t know why NALSAR people want to butt in unnecessarily.

I don’t get the marketing and attempts to poach students who want to go to NLS/NUJS. It is simple really, good institutes don’t market themselves.

Choose either. NLSIU and NUJS have both seen awesome entrepreneurs come up.

NLS - Mooli’s (restaurant in London), Bhukkad (eating joint by a 3rd year).

NUJS - Lawctopus, ClatHacker etc.

With regard to business atmosphere, NLSIU’s new E-cell is doing great work and we get to speak to a lot of amazing alumni for

eg. a NLS-Cambridge pass out on IP matters while starting up, a NLS-Linklaters-now running Akosha.in, An NLS-passout-Amarchand partner-NUS prof etc. I mean you just have to look around to see the non-Law things NLS pass outs do - even in that respect the Alumni are brilliant and LOVE to help you out the minute they hear you want to do something business-y and non-law.

Entrepreneurship - I believe is far more prevalent in a place like Bangalore than Cal. You could always do a remote internship with some IT start-up.

NUJS may have an image of catering to entrepreneurs - NLS has one too. It’s just not that well advertised.

We’ve had tonnes of competitions - example one for setting up a food stall for a couple of days and running it from the local on-campus shop. Got a lot of amazing food that way.

But, I have heard that NLSIu E-CEll inspires itself a lot from NUJS Students. No false claims, but NLS students say so.

Ask NLS would no doubt clear and confuse the matter :)

NLS Entrepreneurship is good, and they inspire me a lot. But, for past few years , NUJS has taken a lead in entrepreneurship matter. And Legal entrepreneurship which we are talking about. PVX Legal, OffShore Reasearch Partners, Lexbiosis, IP Leaders, Verus etc.

NLS past batches were indeed amazing, but same cannot be said with the current batches. Presently, NUJS takes a clear lead in this regard.

Bangalore is more Entrepreneurship kind, but environment is more favourable in NUJS than NLSIU:)

Overall, NLS is better.

Lol. another misconception. The faculty level has gone up at NLS. Our legal faculty has always been decent. With the addition of an amazing new prof, things are definitely looking up. Every year our seniors come back from places like Yale and Harvard.

Our social sciences faculty is very good too.

NLSIU Faculty is good, but it is average in front of NUJS Faculty.

What I’m saying is that it’s getting much much better. We know for a fact that at least two amazing professors are coming (back) here.

This year NUJS has done better in moots too. The faculty at NUJS is much better especially due to sincere efforts of the NUJS VC MP Singh (a renowned academician).

Since infrastructure is the same in both colleges and since NUJS is in probably the most posh, happening central area of calcutta; I think NUJS should be preferred over NLS not only by entrepreneurs but by all CLAT aspirants!

Well, in all of Legally India’s coverage only NUJS had a separate tab for ‘Startups’ and ‘Entrepreneurships’.

2 startups emerged from NUJS, none from NLSIU. So you know what does what.

The thing is when you are located in the center for a metro city like Calcutta, you get to interact with a lot of people: tech guys, startups, businessmen, bloggers, artists and event management companies (All of this goes on in Salt lake city, Kolkata)! :)

This explores you to the world of possibilities in law and outside it. This cannot happen in colleges located in far flung areas.

I don’t know about NLSIU v. NUJS; but as far as NALSAR v. NUJS go…NUJS is my clear preference. NUJS’s faculty quality is miles ahead and so are the placements.

Also, NUJS’ location in the heart of the city is a big plus point.

I don’t know why NALSAR’s placements have been so bad vis-a-vis NUJS.

I wonder why no one is talking about the syllabus or hostels. English is NOT taught at NUJS. So if your English sucks, you’re done for.

Also NLSIU has dormitory system for 1st years’.With 40 idiots in a room with you, lots of things can go wrong…

There is a big space crunch in the girl’s hostel in NUJS, so that is a bit of a put off. Academics wise, yes, NUJS doesn’t have a course in Eng, but if you don’t have a command over the English Language, you don’t deserve to be in a top law school. With respect to the other subjects, NUJS allows students to take electives from the third year itself; therefore giving them the freedom of choosing what they want to study. Basics like Law of Contracts, Law of Torts, IPC and Property Law are done in the first year itself.

@2991pd - I didnt have a good command over English, but I am in NUJS. I have made a command over it after spending 2 years in NUJS.
