QLTS- Inclusion of India

Hi,

I have received a response from SRA that they are awaiting information from India with regard to the QLTS. Can anybody tell me if things are progressing or its something which will go on for years?

I don’t really think that the BCI is going to take any necessary action unless and until someone puts a gun to their head. I have asked the SRA too regarding this issue and this is what they replied…

“I can confirm, regrettably, that I am unable to confirm the status of any applications between the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) and the Bar Counsel of India in regards to the Qualified Lawyers Transfer Scheme.

I would, however, suggest that you check with the Bar Counsel of India that they have applied to be one of the recognised jurisdictions and also check our website for updates on recognised jurisdictions. This can be found at the following http://www.sra.org.uk/solicitors/qlts/recognised-jurisdictions.page.

If you have any further queries that you would like to discuss, please contact us by telephone on 0870 606 2555. Our lines are open 09.00 to 17.00 Monday to Friday. The latest update of the recognised jurisdictions have been updated (13rd of October 2010) on their site and they have added Canada and US but it still does not have India in it.

This is very disappointing. I understand from the media reports that Mr. Gopal Subramaniam promised to take action ASAP. I hope this does not have anything to do with the BCI’s decision regarding entry of foreign law firms because there is no no relation between these two things logically.

I think you are missing the point. The SRA will eventually include India on its list, it’s quite obviuos. The problem is the cost of this programme - which is almost GBP 5,000. How many people can afford it???

FYI, I believe the BCI submitted the application on Friday so fingers crossed it will accepted this week or soon…
