The company secretary course gives you a big edge not only in terms of CV but also in knowlegde of corporate laws. serious effort is required to do CS especially if one is doing it without the coaching facilities available. All the best to the aspirants…

I am also a student but I have talked to a lot of people about the same thing.

First of all, doing the course is not a small thing. Its like a proper degree and you need to work hard for it.

Second, even though it is a correspondence course. It requires a lot of reading up all the year round.

Its a good supplementary course along with your five year llb.

I have known a few seniors who got jobs just because they had a cs degree apart from the llb degree.

Every company requires one cs. It cannot function without it. New companies keep coming up from time to time and so the career prospects are great.

I am sorry but I am not aware of that. I guess there are a lot of lawyers on this website who are associated with UK firms, they might know the answer.

As long as Indian firms are concerned, I can assure you that they give substantial importance to CS.

i have joined the cs course and am gonna write the foundation exam this december…and i have also joined a law college for my llb…will be helpful for me in anyways…

After completing your 3 rd year you will get BA (law) degree then you can directly enter into CS executive program ie, second level of CS. From there it may take atleast 2 years to complete CS course.

you can join 1 level of CS course ie, foundation level after if you dont have graduation ,once you complete foundation (one year) you can enter executive CS level.

so if you are in 1 or 2 year of 5 yr LLB course you can try joining foundation.

but if you are in 3 yr of 5 yr LLB course wait for BA law degree and directly join Executive CS.

if u r really interested in corporate sector than doing CS would be very nice… (even if u r not able to complete it, atleast try to do foundation and inter)

as far question regarding UK firms is concerned…

uk n us firms those who outsource their work or who works with MNC prefer people with indepth knowledge of company laws, so in all cases, CS degree always give an edge..

@ above there is no inter in CS , now it is renamed as executive.

Hi, I’m a B.A.LLB (Hons.) student in a National Law University. I asked someone about pursuing CS alongside the law programme but they said that one wasn’t ‘ALLOWED’ to get enrolled in two professional courses simultaneously.

Though,(he said) since neither the univ. nor the C.S. admission forms asked for such a specification or warned, students were enrolled in CS… but that it was a clandestine thing…

Please advise!

that’s right,BCI guidelines clearly stipulate that no one can pursue any professional course(like ca/cs/cwa) while pursuing a law course

Of course you can choose both… Companies like say TATAs have a legal and secretarial department where they prefer people have both degrees… The boss of the legal department is also the designated CS of the Company…

With regards to law firms, I know many of my friends who have landed great jobs in law firms because of CS… So if you provide the intellectual effort then go for it…

doin cs course completely depends on your interest. As u r law student of national law school u will get good opportunities in top law firms and multinationals. to u cs would b additional qualification. if u want to become a company secretary do the course. but u should keep in mind that u can not take membership of both professions. u need to choose one.

TO DO CS IS DEFINITELY GOOD DECISION BECAUSE POWER & AUTHORITY GIVEN TO THEM ARE USEFUL FOR SERVICE AS WELL AS FOR PROFESSION .. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND TO DO CS.

Knowledge is important but the main importance of CS is that it is a statutory post for all listed companies and also for private companies beyond a threshold capital. Generally in Corporates the Head Legal/General Counsel Position is taken by a CS as he not only Heads the Legal Functions but also doubles up as a Company Secretary. From that perspective CS is somewhat mandatory requirement for heading Legal Function in Corporate. However ceratin companies now are trying to delink Legal functions from Secretarial Function but they are very few.

Please do not mislead. No person can practise two professions in India. firstly the moment a person joins a company as an employee his sanad goes into suspension i.e. he is no longer an advocate. He may be a law graduate but he is no longer an advocate because under Rule 49 of the Bar Council of India Rules, an advocate shall not be a full-time employee of any person, Government, firm, corporation or concern and on taking up such employment, shall intimate such fact to the Bar Council concerned and shall cease to practise as long as he is in such employment. Moreover no Practising lawyer can simultaneously practise any other profession. kindly refer to AIR 2002 Bom 268. Also the Supreme court in 1996 SCC (3) 342, while dealing with the validity of Rule 1 of the Maharashtra and Goa Bar Council Rules relating to enrolment of Advocates eligibility conditions, in para 20 has observed that `legal profession requires full time attention and would not countenance an Advocate riding two horses or more at a time’. The Bar Council has framed specific rules in this regarding putting restriction on other employments by the Advocates.

Yes, one can do the CS course even while doing LLB or anytime thereafter even while practising as an advocate. But subsequently he has to choose only one profession, either that of CS or Advocate…not both. Any way if a person joins a company he ceases to be an advocate in any case.

The Rule #6 of Rules of Legal education, 2008 bars pursuing CS alongside Law.

“6. Prohibition to register for two regular courses of study: No student shall be allowed to simultaneously register for a law degree program with any other graduate or postgraduate or certificate course run by the same or any other University or an Institute for academic or professional learning excepting in the integrated degree program of the same institution.

Provided that any short period part time certificate course on language, computer science or computer application of an Institute or any course run by a Centre for Distance Learning of a University however, shall be excepted.”

The Section 2 Subsection xxiii of the Rules provides the definition of “regular course of study”-

“Regular Course of Study” means and includes a course which runs for at least five hours a day continuously with an additional half an hour recess every day and running not less than thirty hours of working schedule per week.”

Therefore, you CAN pursue Law and CS together.
