CAT(IIM) after Law School???

Rahul Cherian 24 Jun 2010, 13:28

[color=#8000FF]Well wanted to know whether obtaining a post graduate degree from any of the IIMs is a good option after completing B.A LLB from a good law school. Will it give better job prospects and more scope??In what way would it be useful?Or is just a basic undergraduate degree from a good law school enough?

thank you for asking that question. Even I needed to ask it, on a knowledge basis

the more the better… i was readin sumwhr that a substantial numbr of the CEOs in India r alumni of both IITs n IIMs… so what the harm in having the combi of NLUs n IIMs… if u take myself… durin counseling i had the option of choosing BA or BBA… however i felt that i can have a managemnt degree later n wil hav more diverse knowledge than my BBA counterparts..

I am going to the same.

The prospects of a job increase manyfold if both the institutes are good.

Law and finance are closely related. Marketing and HR, not so much.

Although it does help to have two degrees, even if they are not completely related. It shows that you have diverse interests. Plus, it also increases the scope of places where you can apply thereby increasing you chance to get a job. :)

Students of the top NLUs actually find themselves in a dillema when they clear CAT. Many do not go for IIMs.

The reason is this: after two years of IIM and after 2 years of working (having graduated from an NLU…ie you don’t go for an IIM) the pay packages, job responsibilities etc come to be nearly the same.

Moreover, the sort of subjects you have like corporate law, securities, M&As etc and other co-curricular things in an NLU give you skills good enough to match that of IIM students.

@legal Poet:

“The reason is this: after two years of IIM and after 2 years of working (having graduated from an NLU…ie you don’t go for an IIM) the pay packages, job responsibilities etc come to be nearly the same.”

Not that I contradict your statement. Two years ago I read the very same lines and contended myself working with a good law firm job. However now I have reservations on the same:

i. frankly only top 1-2% land up with jobs in big law firms which pay as much. They too have to work extremely hard to sustain their positions. Many embark their legal careers with litigation practice chambers/ offices and in 2 yrs earn nearly 1/10 th what an MBA would earn from day 1.

ii. Moreover, the work life one would have post MBA (IIM) grad, the recognition and package and life quality over all would be unparallel to any Grad from a law school. Believe me when I say this, the jobs most of them end up doing isn’t as crude and laborious as what a law grad is expected tp do no- matter where he joins.

iii. The instant recognition, acceptability and security of future one aspires for doesn’t come in a package deal with an LLB degree but with MBA it does.

iv. An early switch from these top firms can bring one down to 1/3 the salary the IIM Grad would take home without much efforts. So a decision to switch becomes more difficult.

To sum up we all work hard in our respect offices, chambers , courts. Put alot of our health and mental peace at stake. all this with little guarantee of where we end up 10 years from now. While with an much lesser effort at cracking a management entrance and 2 years at MBA, life becomes much simpler, comfortable, respectable and rewarding for all those who walk down this path.

PS. an MBA COLLEGE PREFERS A LLB CANDIDATE FOR ADMISSION ANYDAY OVER A B. TECH GRAD.

You made that look as if it is a cakewalk. Getting in IIMs is not the end of road. Securing a well paying job with all comforts after an MBA is as much difficult as it is for an NLU grad to get into a top law firm. And mind you the corporate houses aren’t fools either. They make you toil like every other fresher coz well they bloody pay you out of their nose. Those MBA grads too slog themselves to sustain coz if you don’t perform you are no good to them.

And instant recognition? Can you name one MBA grad who got instant recognition within two years?

‘The grass is always greener on the other side’, as they say.

First of all I appreciate you for writing your thoughts on this.

I can see you raised the following arguments. Please give a patient read. I hope we discuss this and not argue.

1. You made that look as if it is a cakewalk.

Well may be we consider that it sounds a cakewalk but my friend for an LLB to LLM and even bar examination we need to sit for entrance examinations. These entrances not easy (I hope you agree here atleast).

I am not comparing the method of evaluation of performances (there are ranks for CLAT and percentile for CAT) and not even the number of applicants (in which CAT surpasses most of examinations). As lawyers we all possess a level of competence which is tested in entrance examinations and we are not judged on knowledge of legal principles alone. A fair amount of general aptitude also is tested in entrance.

CAT examination too comprises of similar elements and being an inter-disciplinary examination lawyers are well equipped to sit for them in terms of competence and knowledge.

Clearly with sustained efforts a LLB grad can easily crack CAT. No- where LLB grad is less equipped. If CLAT can be cracked CAT is not that difficult either.

2. Getting in IIMs is not the end of road. Securing a well-paying job with all comforts after an MBA is as much difficult as it is for an NLU grad to get into a top law firm.

I would completely differ on this point. Its a fact and not a myth that an IIM grad has secured his future. The fact is that most of these people do to land good jobs and average salaries ranging to 24 Lakhs. Compare this to NLS and NALASR or any other top Law school and see if its more than 2X the average salaries.

The brand name sustains job shifts and even promotions. The same is not true for law schools at present for sure.

Beyond this if you still disagree then I think you should seek examples for yourself.

Also try finding a fresh IIM Grad with a salary below 75 K a month. If you do please share this with all of us.

The Argument on salaries post 2 years of work ex post LLB and MBA if is to be even considered then please meet your friends working for a good law firm. They will tell you one of these things:

(i) Attrition rate is very high, (ii) not many plan a long term stay (iii) work hours are killing.

A parallel compassion with IIM grads would be a lot different , please seek for yourself and share with us what your hear.

Moreover, a brand name earned from a Top IIMs is sought after no matter where you go.

3. And mind you the corporate houses aren’t fools either. They make you toil like every other fresher coz well they bloody pay you out of their nose.

Here I wouldn’t say much at all. As I cant prove that this is not through here. I cant make you read something and explain you least you wish to agree to what I say.

They do lead a very decent life. Barring a very few profiles, they live by balanced working hours and make huge tons of money in the initial years. Corporate houses employee them for the brand name and smartness. They are valued and held in high esteem that’s all I will say. If you still doubt and hold your stand that they are made made to slog go meet a grad once, no matter how much he may crib just compare them to working hours in a law firm and he will make you realise this if you fail to.

4. Those MBA grads too slog themselves to sustain coz if you don’t perform you are no good to them.

Brother if an IIM grad doesn’t gel well in one company he will switch to another and negotiate a better salary. Switching jobs is not a problem whereas my friend switching a law firm job is and mostly one may have to let go of salary quotient.

5. And instant recognition? Can you name one MBA grad who got instant recognition within two years?

Well starting off at a salary close to 2 L a month or even 1 for next 2 years is nowhere less an achievement. Rest people do not ask any further questions if you are a passout from a B school they would dream themselves or their kids to get in. No one will be bothered if your bahelors was from IIT or BA pass course from a local college.

6. ‘The grass is always greener on the other side’, as they say.

Well my friend with IIM alone offering 2, 016 seats every year and rest other prominent B schools as well the people who make it to national law schools would be 1000 alone and of these a National law schools may be as old as 1 or 2 batches or even none.

Lastly in every other course legal subjects are taught as part of curriculum. Competition law, company law alone involves a good deal of management related understanding. Since we already are contributing in this manner why not broaden our horizons and get competing for CAT.

“The grass is indeed greener on the other side “

PS. ”

It has taken me 2 years to realize this, will take you some time too my friend.”
