kiit is new to law and will take quite some time to come up in the law scene.if u hav option to join some other law school (like amity noida)then go for those.but then if u hav no option then join kiit and by the time u pass it’ll improve a lot.evn u can try contributing to its growth :)

@Rahul - I can assure you that KLS would be an better option rather than in any traditional law colleges (this doesn’t include the famous traditional ones). You get the best course structure in India (I can bet with any one). The new campus is coming up in a few months. Even the temporary building has AC classrooms, adequate number of books in the library, the faculty is good… We have senior faculty like G.V. Ajjappa, Dr. Sebastian, NK Chakraborti… Dr. Faizan Mustafa our ex-director takes regualr classes even after joining NLUO as VC… our Chief Advisor is Dr. N.L. Mitra; Martin Hunter takes classes as visiting faculty every year… Our moot teams have started participating in national and international competitions… though there is no outgoing batch… the internship is moderately good with a few people have already completed their internship abroad… the BCI moot court, the Law Teacher’s Association Conference are going to be held this year… the overall placements in KIIT University in other disciplines are good enough..

take my word, and dont goto KIIT half the seats there are management seats, u dont want to sit next to someone who was a backbencher all his life and has bought his way there, rather than toil his way thru(im guessing ure the latter).

@NALSARian34- For your information admission is done through an all India Entrance (KLSAT) and also CLAT score is accepted on the discretion of the management. Though i will accept that there are a few management seats which most of the private colleges have as well. if u want 2 study it doesn’t matter where u r.

1st, KLS called about 350 students to come with 50,000/- draft though there are not so many seats. Presumed, very very few took admission. Then they again put ad in paper for admission based on clat. What is this? Why the fees are so high when a single batch has not passed till now.

@ABCD - some of the top rankers in KLSAT has scored top in CLAT as well… being a private and a new institutions most of them have chosen NLUs which is a general reaction. those who have not got a seat in CLAT may apply in the courses. There is a total number of 240 seats in each batch (80 in each stream)(i guess that is the highest number of seats offered in india in a single institution of legal studies).

Further, regarding the fees there is difference of around 50 thousand from NLSIU.. NLUs are government institutions so they are provided with subsidies and grants, KIIT being a private institution does not get any kind of such subsidies. Further, KIIT’S sister concern KISS (KALINGA INSTITUTTE OF SOCIAL SCIENCES) is a charitable institute which provides free education and lodging to the poorest of poor tribal children and is the world’s largest tribal school providing this kind of education from KG TO PG (Limca Book of World Records). There is no kind of profit in this institution as most of the extra goes to development of the institution.

KIIT is NOT BAD AT ALL. Thought its new, its full of resources and immense potential. I am being given admission in KIIT..but the only problem is fee structure. For a student, who doesn’t belong to Tribal class, what about them ? What about a simple middle class student ? Naturally, money is still an important barrier to better legal education.

ya, money is nowadays a concern 4 any kind of educational institutions (except the fully aided government ones). Not only NLUs but IIMs charges very high fees. It is easy to get educational loans from Banks nowadays. KIIT being a reputed institution, it will not be very hard to get educational loans provided you have good educational history (read above 65 % at minimum).

i am with one of the top Indian law firms..recently two students of the above-named college interned at our firm..sorry if i may sound a little harsh..both were not at all upto the mark..they were deplorable in research, decorum and etiquettes. I know I shud not be making a generalization based on d performance of 2 students..But, if the first impression from a new college like yours is this bad it would invariably affect your future internship and employment opportunities at firms like ours..

As i have stated, i am with a top law firm..taking name of the firm is uncalled for in this forum..

why deplorable in research: would submit any copy pasted research from Google, no skills in legal database handling and case law research not at all on the issue. So much so, work assigned to them had to be transferred to interns from other NLSs. May i say, their research was to the point and highly satisfactory.

etiquettes and decorum: spoken english and soft skills very poor. Other interns started complaining about these interns as they would disturb them and pass lewd comments. Even after several warnings behavior of the students did not change.

Well not sure what you meant to say, “And how can one work for having a good standards or research and etiquettes while interning.” Good research skills, decorum and etiquettes are needed for a good intern as well as a budding lawyer. Sadly the students from the above-mentioned college came up short on all these.

sir, you must be well versed with facet that most of internships are availed through jugaad… I believe that you had tagency with student who are not proficient … n not serious with their studies. I am convinced that are heaps of students in our law school that are of potency to address your midazolam. Students from our law school are working as a consultant for an Australian based law firm. They are also working as a research assistant with London school of economics and Columbia University.

We are holding jessup and BCI moot this year. Students are also involved in PIL’s, NGO’s etc…

KLS was also awarded for best memorial in commonwealth moot…

We are new in this field.. n still we have achieved number of things…

@ICFAI Aspirant… I have some good friends from ICFAI. Suresh rightly said that the college has a great brand name and i agree though too. But the problem with that college is they pay a very little heal to extra curriculum such as Internships, moot courts, paper writing, seminars etc, which are essential with academics to get decent placement ( U know the exposure plays a vital role for ur placements and all.) . As far as studies r concern it is no doubt a good college. The students are also study oriented and i don’t think its a good approach in this competitive arena(With no grudge to ICFAI Students). Mr ICFAI Aspirant, as suresh said if u have any other option such as Christ or Symbi, then u better those them. Keep ICFAI ur first resort only if u wana be some academician in Law . (Please Correct me if me wrong!!)

@ICFAI Aspirant… As far as my knowledge is concern, the college not at all help in getting internship and if me not wrong there is no student body such as Internship cell/committee. No doubt ICFAI brochure shows some really good internships but those all are arranged by the students themselves with their great efforts [I hope u got my point ;)]. I don’t want to criticise the college as the students are really laborious but what is the point to be so if college is so disinterested (ICFAI being MBA and Engineering College behave stepbrotherly with Law college, that’s a sham).

Now the most important poiunt is that wherever u go, instead of looking into college u must see into ur own ability. Being a topper in a second tier college is better then being a last grade in a NLU.

Y u are so confused if u trust in urself. Don’t think the NLU guys are guaranteed of great placement. I know many ppl who are really doing well in ICFAI and also know some ppl who are hopeless even in NLU. GOT ME???

Well ICFAI is a year or two older than KIIT..That way i did come across a few students from ICFAI..to be very frank, a few of them were exceptionally good while the rest were very decent..

ICFAI students have interned with almost all top firms/mnc’s and in my knowledge are also placed there.. The initial two batches are very good and most achievements of the college, placement activities can be attributed to them.. Besides, i personally feel ICFAI’s course is better than quite a few law schools..

law is an internsting subject…you have competitiors not only in your batch but all across the country…

Well I am a student of KIIT Law School. I am giving you an update as to how are things and how it is done with a reference to myself.

Our students have done exceedingly well in their internships especially in firms like amarchand, Luthra, fox mandal, khaitan and so on. We need not produce any records. Let them get pre placement offers or let the students be called for interview then the reality would be disclosed.

Our students have interned in places like competition commission of india, TDSAT, law commission, companies like TATA, Britania, Pepsi co and so on, Banks like ICICI…

various senior advocates.

some have even done their internships in international law firms and other institutions.

conferences - some of the students have presented papers in harvard, cambridge university… a few have gone to seoul to represent india as a youth delegate. many have presented papers in various international and national conferences.. the list goes on…

publication ---- our students have publications in various.. places… in india..national law school bangalore review.. n various law school review.. IJEEBA.. international journal…

moot courts.. we have participated in umpteen number of moots n to name a few…common wealth.. jessups.. willen c vis.. BCI… n in many of the moot swe have been awarded the best memorial prizes…

faculty… we have a blend of seniors n fresh graduates teaching us..

top three national law schools yeah many of them r good n rest… they feel they have good alumini so they need not do nething… so thy dnt do nething… rest most of it is garbage…

we have lost the glory of the national law schools.. go to ne firm.. the partners u will find is a past our of early 90s.. yes those were the days.. till 2004 it was fine.. after dat everything has just gone down… every law school is fine… it depends on students.. u cant do sppon feeding to a law student…

Dear all, Kiit Law School is still in its nascent stage. Still, in this year i.e.,2011, its hosting the prestigious Bar Council of India moot, as well as the Jessup southern rounds. The months of December 2010 - January 2011 witnessed 2 International Conferences and 1 National Conference. Students have already represented the School at Harvard and Cambridge, and some have interned in law firms in London. The new faculty are drawn from Universities like NUS, NLSIU, NALSAR etc. All classes are air-conditioned, and students have access to Westlaw, Lexis Nexis, Manupatra etc. The School has made a great start, and is rapidly rising. But nevertheless, the next 5 years will be extremely crucial for the School to make its mark in the domain of Indian legal education.

I don’t think it is a great idea to defame a college like this only on the basis of some ‘experience’ of yours with just two students you took as interns in your firm. I would rather blame it on you to take students without following proper recruitment process. A student with a strong CV, good academic records, etc wouldn’t do things like what you mention during internship. However, in the end its your call as to who you take as interns in your firm. But very unprofessional to criticize, form opinions, and give others a bad picture of a college on a global forum. There must be good, hard working students from the college but might never get an opportunity to intern in a good law firm that will come across this post of yours. Anyway, good luck to you and your reputed firm.

Here’s my opinion on Kiit Law -

Short answer - Well, it’s decent.. Not as good as the top Law Schools, but not too bad..

Long answer - I’m going to break it down here -

1. Infrastructure - Better than most law colleges.. A/C Classrooms, 3-floor library, office-like environment. Not bad at all.

2. Faculty - Young and (honestly speaking) inexperienced, especially the ones who are teaching the first years. BUt they are good in terms of actual teaching. So, it’s not an area of concern

3. Students - Well, it’s a private law college with high fees, I’m guessing you know the quality of students.. Some real idiots who have got in through “donations”, and some superhuman geeks who somehow missed the NLUs, but have an awesome future as lawyers.. Rest are decent, average students.

4. Rules/Policies - Really strict.. We have to wear uniforms everyday. And they take attendance REALLY seriously.

5. Placement/Recruitment - Improving every year. The first batch passed out last year with 100% placement, which sounds impossible, but happened because of less no. of students in that batch (48 I guess). Most of the corporates like Relaince, Kotak, ICICI get attracted due to the BBALLB degree offered here.

6. Bhubaneswar - Bbsr is an AMAZING city for those who like urban life but hate the crowd and pollution of metro cities. It’s a well-planned, almost completely developed city that has every required facility (except KFC and McDonalds!) ;)

That’s all I guess. My advice would be to keep this college as a 3rd option after the good NLUs and the really good private colleges (like Symbiosis Pune). If you don’t get into those, try for this one.. Since it’s under Kiit University (the biggest and most popular university in Odisha), funding is never an issue, and the future looks pretty darn good. Anyone following the legal education scene will gladly say that Kiit will be on level will top pvt colleges like Symbiosis with the next 3-4 years…[/size]

I think the most important question is, how much of a loan will you be taking out and what kind of budget do you need for your minimum necessities?

I think a minimum salary expectation on graduation, if you do fairly ok, should be at least 15,000 - 20,000 per month if you go into litigation, but could go up to Rs 30,000 or Rs 40,000 or so if you start going for litigation law firms or corporate firms, or if you work really hard at internships and the rest, you could even get a job up to Rs 1 lakh per month, although there aren’t many of those, so I wouldn’t necessarily count on it…

do KLS also take thos students who gave their clat?? do they consider clat marks and do they accept application in june????

They do consider CLAT marks. Many of the better students get in through CLAT scores. The admission process may be at it’s ending stages, so I’d suggest applying immediately…

If you are concerned about placement in KLS, I can assure you that one may get a decent salary with jobs in good companies, LPOs and law firms from campus recruitment. The batch of 2013 was recruited by 8-9 recruiters (campusing), all offering salary between 3 lakhs to 4 lakhs p.a.:

One word of caution, this year the recruitment was not 100% like last year. But considering the fact that almost 55-60 students has been placed through campus recruitment and another 10-15 were placed through off-campus recruitment, out of around 100-110 students (total batch strength 148) who registered for campusing, it a significant achievement for a comparatively new law school Many students have opted for higher studies both abroad and in India. I have also not mentioned those students who have opted for litigation.

KIIT SCHOOL OF LAW IS A BAALER CHAL

For all the hype about infrastructure, KLS provides nothing, really. The engineering campuses of KIIT are good, and the MBA campus is really great, no doubt. But as far as KLS is concerned, it leaves a lot to be desired. The entire law school is just one building which has 5-6 floors 3 floors for classes, 3 for library, the former, I’m not so sure.Anyway, one building? Doesn’t appeal to me.

That “one building” has enough (all Air-Conditioned) rooms for 1000+ students’ classrooms, an Auditorium, a Library, a Moot Court, etc. The size of that “one building” is being doubled right now, and the whole thing will be pretty damn HUGE by the end of this year. And remember that Kiit is an University ; it has almost everything a student would ever require in his/her college life. Every BRANCH of engineering has a separate college here. Kiit International School is one of the prettiest-looking schools you’ll ever see in any non-metro Indian city (seriously, look it up). The Law School is new, which is why construction isn’t done yet, and it isn’t that “pretty” as of now. So yeah, calling it “one building” might be the truth, but it isn’t the whole truth.

And since when is a three-floor library a disadvantage? If you’re more interested in the size of a library rather than it’s content, there is a Central Library for the whole University too. It’s a whole damn building.

Yes, Kiit has it’s problems (esp. the law school), but from an infrastructural point of view, it’s better than most of the lower/mid-level NLUs.

My friend I am in the first year at kiit and at kiit you get ample amount of benefits like participating in parliamentary debate and enjoy your life king size and mainly the best thing is that you can take part in pd’s in first year itself.

KIIT Law School has gone to the dogs. The administration is weak. The Examination department sucks in every respect. They take out notices just 1 or 2 days before the exams being conducted. Pathetically, the core teachers have left the institution. By core teachers, I mean the late Karthik Sir( Great constituional Law Prof), Shyam Kishore Sir ( Contract and Company Law Prof), Ajappa Sir ( Legal Methods, Jurisprudence), Ali Sir (Legal Methods/Jurisprudence),Tyagi Sir ( Company Law/ Company Honors), Nandi Sir (Procedural Law). The Director is spineless being not aware of his own powers and deflecting his works and responsibilities to other departments making a complete chaos in times of needs. Be aware of some teachers like Jinia Kundu and Dipanwita Sinha. They have the attitude of my way or the highway, they are rubbish in class room teachings and are not helpful in any way. They also take out personal vendetta by flunking students and taunting them in their VIVA sessions (which precisely shows their quality). There are still some good teachers left like paromita chattoraj, parimita dash,Souvik sir and some good ba/bba teachers. Thus to keep it short dont join KIIT SCHOOL OF LAW by paying that amount that you can spend on a better institution.
