Even, I had the same questions regarding NLIU till a few days back. Before that I got in touch with quite a lot of guys at NLIU. They said that students are allotted double occupancy rooms in the first year and single rooms frm the second year. The campus is situated away from the city hence, all the fun is restricted to the campus only. However, there are a couple of lakes and other places to visit nearby. The academic schedule is quite demanding. You can make or break your career at NLIU. It has a pretty decent debating culture and if you have the gift of the gab, then you are up for some real fun. You will be having exams once every 30-40 days.

when do they provide laptop?i mean at subsidized rate?when is it vailable?and do we have to wear uniform?

Well 5-odd years or 5-years full of fun/disappointment/anger/depression would be determined in the first month of your stay in college.

Campus ain’t “very” far from the city as everyone claim, it’s just far from the railway station and airport which is 14 and 15 km respectively and this is the state with every national law school. Yes the college is situated in the reserved forests and the schedule is pretty hectic and as a senior said you can make or break your career here. You do have human habitation around your college which includes the house where Rajneeti was shot which is right next to NLIU. Also the main area where you will find people/shops/houses/petrol pumps and everything else one “desires” just approx. 4km from the campus.

The mess food is “tolerable” and you will have numerous places to go and eat food if you do not like the mess food. In Bhopal you will get really good food whether north Indian or south Indian or whether you want veg or non-veg.

Transport- A lot of NLIU students have bikes/cars on campus and you are allowed to keep one. You have autos right outside the college gate taking you to any place you want. Few months back NLIU administration also started providing vehicles (cars) to students to go anywhere in the city at fixed reasonable rates. We have 2 college buses which take the students to the market on Thu and Sundays and 2 rounds each of those days. These buses are also used for court visits, etc.

Laptops (according to me) is essential in your first year itself. The college won’t help you in purchase of laptops but might just discourage you from getting one in the start. But it would make more sense getting it in the beginning.

Sim cards your “close” seniors would help you getting one and your seniors will also help you get adjusted with the campus and city.

Rooms: First years are given double rooms. The rooms are hugh and you will get all the things you would require in that room. TLast batch got single rooms i think in their 2nd or third trimester and now they would shift into the old hostel which has only single rooms. he hostels have common toilet/bathrooms and are generally very clean but that depends on how you keep it later on.

Lastly, the whole campus is wi-fied, beautiful and if your depressed visit the Kerwa Dam close by (or drown in it :P )

Your seniors are really sweet and will help you overcome all your fears. So you wouldn’t need to worry much. Any other clarifications please post a comment and I will be obliged to help you out.

1)do i have to wear uniform in the college?i mean in the regular classes?

2)does fm radio catch in the campus?

3)is there wifi in the hostel?if not then how do i access net there?

4)are the classrooms air-conditioned?

5)and last but not the least,is there bsnl free india plan there?(its 606 plan here in jharkhand)

And even what the fourth year nliuits said had logic.rajneeti and law go hand in hand.now if the film was shot there it certainly means that they liked the place and the students nearby(who possibly may be selected by the film guys as legal advisor in bollywood).

Hey everyone, im back…

firstly…im sad at the really poor sense of humour exhibited by the NLUJ student if SK claims to be one of them.

and…I don’t think NLIU is loosing out to NLUJ in any aspect and I guess you would know that better than anyone else too knowing the internal things in your college.

firstly, you dint get the sarcasm in rajneeti and secondly it was to prove a point that our college does have things around and is not in the middle of a dessert… :P

now coming back to the purpose of this thread… the answers to your questions viku…

1. no uniform whatsoever… wear whatever you like for classes… do carry formals cos you will need it for guest lectures and other programs/events, etc… (better dont shop for them in bhopal)

2. yes you get radio and its clear too…

3. the whole campus (50 acre) is wi-fied and not a single spot in the university that does not catch wireless signals, in fact you would get it arounf 100-200 m outside campus too. we have routers at the remotest locations of the college too.

4. classrooms are not air conditioned…in fact it is not needed because the temperatures would be really low in winters (10 degree or less)..1 month of summer is tolerable during the rainy season its really pleasant..

5. and about the bsnl plan i dont know..ask your customer care.. and since im not employed there I cannot answer that… but yes our college provides bsnl sim cards so if u want one u can speak about it with someone in the office.. thats all i know about bsnl..but ask your seniors which sim should you take depending on which room you get and the network u get there…

and yes your seniors are really sweet…you’ll have a really good time interacting with them… and make sure to get most of your queries answered in the first week itself (regarding college and life not a job)

it depends if you can eat the same kind of food…its generally not oily but its good… if your bored of the same food you have a lot of places to eat outside… so dont worry you’ll know the rest when you come down…

Lol this chap from NLU-J actually comes on this thread to complain about what NLIU students are bothered about. Hes so bothered about what NLIU chaps are chatting and even complain about it. Looks like he dint get an internship from college and has no life so he decided to vent his frustrations on this place. I have never seen NLIU students complain here or even NALSAR. We at NUJS anyway don’t need to prove ourselves.

Well I’m starting at National Law University, Jodhpur this year [unless there will be a 3rd List in which if I’m very lucky I may slip into Kolkata] and I gave Jodhpur as my 4th Preference after the Big 3 [missed Kolkata by 1 Mark in the 1st List and by 0 Marks but by 1 Mark in the tie-breaker section in the 2nd List, darn!]. My brother who is starting his final year at NALSAR and has interned with Amarchand and Mangaldas and Luthra and Luthra told me that Jodhpur is much better than Bhopal. I did not take Bhopal despite my paternal home being in M.P. I would have got into Bhopal general category anyway. Also after reading from other sources I think I have made no mistake by taking Jodhpur ahead of Bhopal. So I think National Law University, Jodhpur is the better Law School.

haha…who cares by what you think. No one is least bothered. My brother has passed out from NLSIU and he spoke to people in his firm and in addition with people in Khaitan and ICICI and they said NLIU is anyday better. Im going to Bhopal and I don’t regret it. Ive read a lot about it and I know its one of the best law schools. Atleast its not in a dessert and i won’t roast there. Post your pics of your camel ride on the way to college out here. lol

Why so serious? I don’t plan on going to work for Khaitan or ICICI that’s what you’ll get out of Bhopal. I plan on working with a Top Law Firm. The DESERT (not dessert) affects your College decision? That’s pathetic. Both your criterion and your spelling.

And also, a cliched line, is it fun there ? i mean i know it all depends on your personality, but truthfully, i am not exactly what one could conveniently call a ‘social butterfly’. so my question exactly is, do people get left out there ?

From what i hear and read you wont get time to travel much.and,you are lucky too,mumbai is nearby(i think 6 hours),you dont have to travel for 24 hrs atleast.

hey Akansha…im from bombay and in the 4th year currently. You do not have many people from bombay at Nliu. 3 girls and 2 boys including me in the 4th year, 2 girls in the 2nd year and no1 in the first year. You can travel with these people from bombay to bhopal. Advantages- You have a lot of trains from bombay to Bhopal other than trains. We normally travel in 3-tier AC and even 3-4 flights a day from Bombay-Bhopal and vice versa. You will definately enjoy college (after 1 month) …first one month ull take to know college and try to adjust. You wont fell lonely n stuff n im sure withing a month ull start enjoying college life. for travelling you have many people from college coming down to bombay for internships and even returning back to college from there… so do not worry abt travelling ull always have some1 or the other… tc and enjoy ur vacation b4 college

ull have a 1-2 months break in sep last week or oct and a 1 mth break in dec jan..followed by a 2 months break throughout may n june… always book ur tickets 1-2 mths in advance…anyway ur seniors will help u out with tht…

@Bombay-ite again - at NLIU do you really get so much holidays?? We poor fellows at KLS are just made to accustomed to join Indian Army soon or to face the situations in law firms. You get holidays of only 10 days during oct and dec each… no inter-sem break. (Once our winter break was shortened to five days) In summer you get 2 months holiday… sundays extra classes, guest lectures, classes after normal schedule… I guess i have joined an army school rather a law school… how is the situations in other NLUs.??

We have full 3 and a half month break every year other than every saturdays and sundays being off.

Looks like your brother did not teach you anything about a top tier firm. […] Khaitan is a top tier firm and for your information, ICICI pays more than many of your “top tier firms” and is a big client of Amarchand. Most of the students then switch. I pity NLUJ or NUJS considering the kind of students going to enter and their lack of knowledge in vital issues and baseless arguments.

not to forget NALSAR stedents not only claim Khaitan to be a 2-tir or 3-tier firm but also spread it to their friends and family. This is sad on the part of NALSAR students and going to be NLUJ or NUJS students.

Khaitan might be an okay firm, however I consider Amarchand, Luthra, AZB, Trilegal and J.Sagar to be top firms and according to the Legallyindia survey they pay more than Khaitan and ICICI. As you can see neither of them pay more than the Firms I was talking about. So there’s no need to pity me.

Get your fact right kid. Khaitan is the highest paying recruiter in India, and if you check out any other rankings it is always placed above Luthra. Only AZB and Amarchand are better. Looks like your brother has given you no info whatsoever, or well he must be dumb and having no knowledge on national Law firms. Check out the RSG-Rankings on Bar & Bench, Capital Markets Rankings or any other rankings in India and show me Luthra is better. Luthra is an OK firm in front of Khaitan, and Khaitan is a regular recruiter of NLIU. You need to get your facts right dude or you’ll be mocked all your life.

PS- Go into law school through a quota or did you pay? Your brother sure did pay.

All pay scales have been revised and khaitan has paid the highest any Indian recruiter has ever paid. That kid surely needs to know such things if hes in a National. I wish hes not in my University. The legallyindia pay table is updated to this year and even mentions data for 2011. Khatan is nowhere near the top of that. I would appreciate it if you don’t get personal. No need for you to bless National Law University, Jodhpur because its on the way up as it is.

I’m from NLIU and the university is doing very well.

And the for the first year kid, Its good you are getting what you chose; whether NLUJ OR LUTHRA or whatever; we are equally blessed with a talented pool of students here.

I think none of us(neither NLIU nor you) need each other. So it would be better we don’t discuss ranks at this forum (which was meant for discussing life in NLIU and not which institute is better).

PS Moreover choosing law schools in CLAT is a personal choice driven by a number of factors I chose NLIU as my third choice even though I belong to Jaipur. Some different choices hardly make a difference in law school rankings.

yes we don’t need students who have no knowledge of the Indian Legal market. I guess such students land up at NLU-J apparently.

I just read this whole convo just now, and I really pity my college if this kiddo really made it here. Hes not only spiling our relationship with prospective employers but also showing his lack of knowledge on these issues. I just hope I get hold of him. Nluj students are not like this, but we do get few like these every year, who are dumb but think they are brainy. Thats the case with every college I think

Look, I didn’t say any firm is bad, I even said Khaitan is a pretty nice firm. I was just discussing pay scale. I was also defending my College when somebody was saying another College was better. I’ll leave it at that.
