Should one start interning from the first year itself? If yes then where..and does the college help or one has to manage himself??

It is quite important to start internship from the first year itself… In first year you can try working in a NGO, Human Rights Commission, trial courts… As of arragnging internship… most NLUs do provide internship but arranging it by self would be better

I agree with Legal Tiger. Intern as much as you can. Network with them too. If you search properly, you can get good work from the beginning. Working on projects at internships can then be converted into research papers so don’t take it lightly.
1st Year NGO
2nd Year Trial Court
3rd Year Trial Court
4th Year High Court/Firm/ Company (depending on your choice)
5th Year Continue with the 4th year internship to increase a possibility of a pre placement offer.
:)
I have inteened at 4 places till now. I never miss to intern in a vacation. It might seem a bit hectic but it will pay off. Trust me. :)

@viku - some of the famous NGOs which have a lot of legal or para-legal works includes CRY, WWF, PUCL, PUDR, Narmada Baanchao Andalan, etc…
Check out this website for list of NGOs and their contact details.
Write to them on the email id or snail mail. Howver, you can always call them up if they take interns.
Further, ask seniors, class mates, relatives for getting contacts.

It depends on which NGO you choose.
Some NGOs ask you to draft RTIs.
Some ask you to research in their area of working.
The place at which I was interning worked on legal and political issues so it was a great experience for me. I read up on a lot of important things. They explained to me the importance of all government bodies.
I took part in debates organised by the NGO. Met a lot of intellectual people.
NGO internships generally do not have a lot of work because mostly only first year students intern there. First years are not aware of any of the laws till then and so cannot do proper legal work. They can taught about it though. :)

Hi,
You can’t intern with the UN unless you’re in your third year. I suggest you look at international NGOs in India like the Clinton Foundation.

Am from a small town n wanna intern with a well known Ngo r law firm..its difficult for me to go to different cities for that purpose..so anyone aware of firms r NGos which offer online interning…plzz help…

@ AM GOOD - i don’t know if there is any NGo which gives online internship… the whole thin of doin things in the virtual world wont really help you in real life…

*Considering the fact that we have totally 3 months off in a year, can we intern at 3 different places- an NGO , Media Agency and The Law commission.
*How exactly do we contribute to a media agency ?
*could u plz give us an idea of the NGO’s suitable for internship
that would help us in our future legal career.

Intern in every vacation. It will be sufficient. Its not necessary to intern at different places. What you learn at an internship is much more important, in the long run.
I am not too sure about internship at a media agency. I haven’t do it.
I suggest you first intern with a renowned NGO in your area of residence. So that you can know what all things are done there. So that will take care of one month.
In the second and the third month you can intern at an NGO which works in the field you are interested in. This way you can learn stuff easily and quickly.
You can choose NGOs from the list given in the forum above. If you don’t get them then tell me your area of interest and the place where you stay. I’ll try to find out. :)
I agree with legaltiger on the fact that online internships are not the same as real life internships. I guess you can do an online internship along with a normal internship.

@ All…I m agree with napster that it is not necessary to intern at different places. During first year it is really better to be into an NGO, commission or any Media agency (Coz of lack of legal knowledge).
But before leaving for an internship make it a point that you be ready to work hard, it will help u in two ways, Firstly, u will learn how to handle professional responsibility. second and most important u make contacts there. Yes friends, Where ever u work try ur best to impress your senior, and it will certainly help u getting further internship (Or may be placement). I got my internship this years courtesy of my last employer. u know one day i got a call from him asking me “Do u wana intern there??”.. U see we never know who can be helpful n where.
Napster rightly said that doing one internship at a time is enough and i suppose his indication was to do quality of internship rather running after quantity. I don’t know about the others but i felt that we learn very little from the internships, They expect us to work rather training us (In a good firm people have hardly any time for all this).
Further never forget to make friend while internship. Thanks to my internships i have a lot of good friends all around the country and this certainly help. Among all this this i will sincerely advise all friends to do as much musty as u can do during internship but in proportionate to ur work. Always remember “work hard and Party harder!!!”

Human Rights Law Network (HRLN) is probably the best NGO to intern…for a 1st year law student.
On international v. local NGOs…well, both have their pros and cons. Reputed international names look good on CVs. On the other hand local NGOs might provide you more exposure and give you good grass-root work.
In an international NGO the air conditioned rooms and the corporate style work culture might not provide you with an experience/insight which can goad a socially motivated individual into bigger things.
