Its amazing to note that when I try to post, I need to enter the code. How can a spammer get away with it?

Indeed - it’s the bane of my life!
I have the feeling most of the forum spammers are not automated but actually involve someone manually signing up to create an account with a disposable email and captcha.
Once you have an account, you do not need to fill in the captcha to make a post.
Not many ways around it except for deleting the post and banning the IP as soon as someone spams, I guess…
