SC hit by hattrick retirements as it breaks up for summer (and Winter is Coming)

Supreme Court justices AK Patnaik, KS Radhakrishnan and SS Nijjar are effectively retiring today with the long Supreme Court summer vacations starting from today, leaving the bench that had briefly enjoyed a full and unprecedented strength of 31 during the tenure of former CJI P Sathasivam, severely diminished.

In 2014 a total of 10 of the Supreme Court’s 15 most-senior judges are set to retire.

@barandbench tweeted from the farewell ceremony at the Supreme Court today that solicitor general Mohan Parasaran said in a speech that “all three judges retiring today are the greatest of gems, all three of them have unanimously declined post retirement jobs”.

@CourtWitness1, tweeting opinions on the outgoing three judges, said:

I'll miss J Patnaik the most. But for his RTE and medium of instruction judgements he left a good legacy of judgements behind. Hearings in Patnaik's courts were lively without being chaotic and rarely dull. He was very much an active listener and posed thoughtful qs.

I must confess I wasn't very impressed by J Radhakrishnan but he's grown on me over the years and I've grown to like his judicial work. Radhakrishnan one of those judges who put in the effort and time at writing well researched judgements even if he wasn't active on bench.

J Nijjar, as good as he was in arbitration law and some aspects of commercial law, he wasn't easiest to argue before if you're not a senior.
