CBI jails SC registry officials for seeking early-listing bribe from Anuradha Saha husband

The US NRI widower who won a Rs 6 crore compensation battle in October at the apex court for medical negligence that caused the death of his wife, Anuradha Saha, has yesterday won in a special CBI court that convicted two ex-Supreme Court registry officials of corruption.

The two officials, C Perumal and Kudallur Srinivas Badrinatham, have been sentenced to two and three years in jail respectively, reported the Times of India.

CBI judge Dinesh Kumar Sharma convicted the registry staff for demanding a Rs 75,000 bribe from Dr Kunal Saha to list his case early for a final hearing and threatened him that non-payment would result in a delayed hearing.

Sharma said: “There cannot be duality of opinion that corrupt practices adopted by officials of the court tarnish image of the judicial system as such... The cancer of corruption is more dangerous to judicial system, which is the only institution in which a common man has still certain amount of faith. The instances like present one give serious jolt to the faith of litigants in the judicial system… The convicts before this court being the employees of the highest court of this land, deserves appropriate punishment.”
