SC orders DC judges to supervise committees regulating animal welfare in slaughterhouses

The Supreme Court today asked all high court chief justices to nominate a retired district judge each, to serve for two years on State Committees overseeing the implementation of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Rules 2000.

The serving judges will be paid Rs 20,000 per month for their work on the committees, to be borne by the state governments, said Justices KS Radhakrishnan and Pinaki Chandra Ghose in their order.

The Supreme Court had passed two earlier orders, which has now resulted in the formation of the committees [Order (PDF 55 KB)]
