Mukul Rohatgi AG appointment in limbo after RamJet slams his anti-black money credentials

The appointment of Mukul Rohatgi, who was considered a shoo-in to become the next Attorney General of India, appears to have been put on hold following a critical letter by senior counsel and former BJP member Ram Jethmalani to the BJP leadership.

Jethmalani told the Indian Express: “Yes, I have written to the Prime Minister, asking him to not appoint Rohatgi to the post. I have asked Modi to not appoint anybody who is opposed to the move to bring back black money from foreign accounts to any post. It will send a wrong signal since one of the major reasons for the electoral victory of the BJP was the reluctance of the previous government to take effective steps to bring back black money.”

Jethmalani had filed a petition in the Supreme Court on the issue of black money held overseas.

Ram Jethmalani has the audacity to object when he appears for every scamster responsible for black money from Subrata Roy to Mulayam and Prakash Singh Badal and Anil Ambani and The Hindujas. This is a laugh.

RamJet is doing his duty as a lawyer in appearing for Subroto Roy..I think its stupid to equate that with his personal views on black money.

The question here is about whether Ram is doing his duty by randomly making bald and baseless allegations against a fellow practitioner at the Bar simply because he has a personal agenda.

Those standards of professional ethics relate to a time when advocacy was considered to be a noble profession, not when it becomes a bread winning preposition for the modern lawyer. There is nothing under professional ethics that compel a person to take a case that he loathes on account of his principles. If the standards of the profession are to be interpreted otherwise, then you are not doing justice to your client, for now you argue for something that you yourself don't believe in, in which case you are not being professional by not doing a proper job. Ethics demands that in such cases you convince your client to seek professional help from elsewhere, or convince the client to accept your principled view. Professional excuse cannot be a cover for the scoundrel to hunt with the hounds and to run with the hare!
