Madras bar leads 5000 person rally; protests disciplinarian amendment to Advocates Act Rules

The Madras High Court Advocates Association (MHAA) registered its protest against the Advocates Act amendment that enables the high court to debar errant lawyers, by leading a 5000 person rally, reported the Deccan Chronicle.

5000 advocates from over 135 bar associates from 35 districts, including an advocate dressed as a Chola emperor, walked and rode chariots and vehicles in Chennai carrying placards. The MHAA asserts that advocates would face “serious difficulties in pursuing their profession in the courts” if the amendment comes into force.

The Madras bar frequently witnesses violence and disruption by its lawyers, and the Bar Council of India (BCI) recently suspended over a dozen Madras advocates for violence.
