Delhi litigation firm Karanjawala & Co has withdrawn as advocate-on-record (AoR) in senior advocate Ram Jethmalani’s Supreme Court case to get black money held by Indian nationals abroad returned to the country, reported the Times of India.
Managing partner Raian Karanjawala told the TOI: “When he came to us with the case five years ago in public interest and knowing him to be a public spirited person, we had associated with it... In the light of his latest innuendo, which I do not agree with, we have decided not to associate with the case. We have communicated our decision to Jethmalani. We are taking steps to intimate the Supreme Court registry about our decision.”
Jethmalani had slammed the government in court last week over its excuse that it could not disclose the names of foreign bank account holders because of international treaty’s confidentiality provisions. The former BJP member also said that the Narendra Modi government was like “crooks” who have “illegally parked their ill-gotten money abroad” and who were protecting corporates.
