Breaking: Senior counsel UU Lalit to become SC judge after Gopal Subramanium bowed out

Supreme Court senior advocate Uday U Lalit will be elevated to the apex court’s roster, it has been confirmed, as former solicitor general Gopal Subramanium withdrew his candidature facing controversy over his elevation.

Lalit will meet the Chief Justice of India (CJI) RM Lodha on 29 June to accept his appointment, confirmed two independent authoritative sources.

Lalit had been the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) special public prosecutor to investigate the 2G scam, but his appointment as prosecutor had been opposed by the Congress government on the ground that he had not worked under a state government or the central government for at least seven years, which was an eligibility requirement.

The collegium had recommended Subramanium’s elevation alongside senior counsel Rohinton Nariman, and chief justices Adarsh Goel and Arun Mishra.

Lalit’s office was not reachable for comment at the time of going to press but a formal announcement is expected on 30 June.

GS should have shown a little bit of restraint before going all out to the media yesterday. CJI is travelling and is not in town. He would have returned this Saturday and then would have surely taken stock of the situation. There was already communication in progress between the Judiciary and the Executive. It was the headache between them (the two departments) to sort it out and then give their reasonings on the next steps. GS's name would have been cleared by mid-August and then he would have been elevated by Sept just before CJI's superannuation. But GS was a bit impatient and just messed up the whole situation. Anyway, the question remains - whether the 'sixth sense' tricked him this time! If I may, I would say that its the sense and sensibility of 'I' and 'Me' that intends to lead to 'loss and longing' for the rest of one's life. 'We' are indeed living in interesting times!

Sit and wait while the world mocks his credibility as a lawyer and potential Chief Justice??? !!! No person of his position and stature would take such B.S. The problem, with your view and the many who share it, is that it hinges on presumptions, which at a subconscious level, require correction. I think, it has something to do with us, Indians, seeing too many pliable people occupy public offices, which matter... Only a pliable person would be willing to undergo such public-mockery to become a Supreme Court-Judge/ Chief Justice. Having said all of this, I must add that Mr. U.U. Lalit is a fine human being and a competent lawyer. He would make a sound judge..

The problem with your view is that it hinges on presumptions, which demand much reflection..Only a pliable candidate can be willing to undergo such public-ridicule to become a Supreme Court-Judge/ Chief Justice. Having said all of this, I must add that Mr. U.U. Lalit is a competent lawyer and fine human being. He would make a sound judge, without a doubt. Hats off to the collegium for atleast attempting to bring capable candidates with good antecedents..

Good to see Senior Advocates agreed to become supreme court Judges, New Senior Advocates shall get room to place their matter much better before them other Advocates practicing in supreme court of India shall get motivation to follow senior Advocates with whom they worked,learned and shared the common bar.
