Vodafone asks for more time in SC tax appeal after $2.5bn tax bill

The Supreme Court yesterday adjourned the hearing in Vodafone’s appeal against the 8 September Bombay High Court order to 15 November, following a Rs 11,218 crore tax liability notice served by the income tax department on the telecom giant on Friday.

Vodafone pleaded that it needed time to consider the tax liability computed by the department and asked the court to grant more time, The Hindu reported.

On 27 September, the Supreme Court had directed the income tax department to calculate the amount Vodafone was supposed to pay on the capital gains accrued from the 2007 Hutchison Essar’s acquisition in India by 25 October.

A Supreme Court bench comprising of Chief Justice SH Kapadia and justices KS Radhakrishnan and Swatantra Kumar considered the arguments advanced by senior advocate Harish Salve who asked for time to reply to the tax notice on behalf of Vodafone.

Well I am completely against the Indian Government in Vodafone Tax Case. The laws in India keep on changing just like one is costumes on daily basis. The government is constantly putting pressures to pay of the taxes but have they ever thought that they are providing the job opportunity in India which our government is not able to do from past so many years. I don’t see any point Vodafone paying Indian Government on a gain made by someone else. Even if Vodafone pay off the taxes what will happen. Nothing these ministers like Pranab Mukherjee will keep piling the money in the Swiss accounts ruining the country. They are not asking this money for the sake of the country but to fill in their own pockets…Before they actually ask Vodafone to pay the taxes they should actually ask their Ministers to get their black money from Swiss to India.
We should all understand that from the day Vodafone has entered the Indian market, there have been a competition in the telecom sector due to which we are getting the best of the services. Moreover, Vodafone is still thinking to safeguard the interests of its stakeholders. This is how a competitive and transparent firm’s work likes and we should also remember that Vodafone is one of the largest taxpayer in India.
