SC ‘zeroes in’ on alleged harasser judge via intern register, reports Telegraph

The Supreme Court registry has checked the records of interns assigned to judges, on the directions of the Chief Justice of India P Sathasivam, allowing the court to identify the alleged former judge accused of sexual harassment, according to The Calcutta Telegraph yesterday.

The paper reported that “convention demanded that an intern work with a particular judge for only a month, the accused judge seemed to have insisted that the women interns work with him for six months”.

“According to the sources,” added the paper, “the feeling among the higher judiciary is that the judge should be named, if only to end the speculation about the other judges who retired recently. So far, the accused judge has not been named.”

The allegations against the unnamed judge first surfaced on 6 November in a blog post by a former student (“SJ”) who said she had interned with him. She expanded upon her experience in an interview with Legally India on Monday (11 November), with the CJI constituting a three-judge inquiry the following day.

SJ is expected to appear before the inquiry on Monday. [Click here for more coverage of this story]

BREAKING NEWS: Outlook has become the first media outlet to practically reveal the identity of the judge. Just read the first 2 paras:

Kian, I think you should either formally name the judge now or let us name him without censoring.

Kian, you are truly milking this story for every paisa. More than the judge it is your penchant for overdosing on this story that has me disgusted.

When a story is this important it's called coverage, not milking. If you don't think this issue is important and deserves transparency and the light of publicity, please feel free to cancel your LI membership, I won't take it personally.

You can use whatever euphemism you like but half a dozen stories in as many days on the same topic where the 3-member panel is the only one real 'development' that has taken place. Is there really a need to report what Shamnad Basheer or Hamnad Shasheer have to say? Do you think anyone speaking to the media will give any comment other than wholehearted support? Christ, if Tendulkar was asked he would also totally be on the intern's side.

Truly you have brought the UK tabloid culture into India, Kian. You will doubtless be remembered for this even if not as a journalist. We do not have this prying culture in India as you have in UK. Try to keep that in mind.

I, as many national newspapers, lawyers and members of civil society, think that this is an important story that should not be ignored.

The support of a faculty member of the intern's former college is worth recording, as is his call for the college to investigate the matter, as it has a responsibility towarsd its interns and where they are placed.

As mentioned, if you disagree with our editorial decisions or line on this issue, please feel free to stop reading LI or those stories that you don't like, or to leave comments.

Best wishes,
Kian

This is the problem of debating with you when youre on a slippery slope Kian. All you can say is "Please stop reading LI". How ostrich-like.

Pretty much proves my point.

Also the fact that youve "recorded" the statement of Mr Basheer instead of a university official such as the VC or the Registrar goes to show what a tabloid-like approach you have. Does it ever strike you that Mr Basheer's views are not those of the university ? But of course you are only interested in getting a "sensational" statement.

It may be that an injustice has been done to this girl. But shes an adult and is aware of her rights. No one appointed you to be the self-proclaimed messiah on her behalf or start the media circus that this has degenerated into. Remember you are only a guest in this country. Take back your uncouth journalism to the UK or wherever you come from.

Until you think about these things which are part of serious journalism your site will remain nothing more than a tabloid where bored law students and the occasional bored associate gripe about bosses or teachers and the occasional bored partner tries to do some cheap publicity by sending you details of "deals".

You'll clearly always hate this website and me personally, so I'll stop arguing with this troll. Take care, Kian :)

what a ridiculous comment ! Anybody who watches the 24 hours news cycle will know what "milking" a story for all its worth is in india (this is certainly not an example of that and we definitely haven't adopted this from the uk) - the only people who hate legallyindia are the masters of law firms and members of the legal establishment like senior counsels whose stupidity, mean spiritedness and true character was hidden under a veneer of mystery and "respectability" (now no more because as they can be exposed to the entire fraternity by legal news websites). which one are you?

Thanks for your support but I think it's partly my fault for having published / responded to this obvious trolling in the first place...

While you have a guaranteed right to free speech, I find this argument relying on so-called "Indian" culture disconcerting. Is "sexual harassment at workplace" part of "Indian" culture or contrary to it? Is adherence to the constitutional promise of "rule of law" part of "Indian" culture or against it?

Or, did you just get a really bad grade in Shamnad's course?

Is there a reason that "Another Guest" wants this story to be given less importance?

you don't find the conduct of the SC judge disgusting? you don't feel that the news should get this kind of coverage?

Even in the worst case scenario, "if" (and its a very big if) LI is milking this story. then also, so what?

This is an extremely serious issue.

My biggest worry is this case being politicized. The accused judge has a very bad equation with a certain Chief Minister. My prediction is that this Chief Minister will start going after the judge next week, since Outlook has now disclosed his identity. In the meantimne, opponents of the Chief Minister will start slandering the girl. Mark my words, these pathetic developments will happen next. There will be full-blown politics.
