Intern allegedly harassed by ex-SC judge will depose before judicial inquiry, asks for privacy

The NUJS Kolkata graduate who blogged about having been allegedly sexually assaulted by a former Supreme Court judge in 2012, released a statement requesting privacy until she would depose before the Supreme Court’s three-judge inquiry, which was set up yesterday.

Late last night, she wrote on the blog of the Journal of Indian Law and Society, which first hosted her post containing the initial allegations:

Since yesterday, a lot of media persons have tried to contact me – either directly or through the journal. Since the committee has now been constituted, I will depose before the Hon’ble judges. Thus, it won’t be appropriate for me to speak to members of the media anymore. Moreover, I have nothing more to say than whatever I have already said in my blog post and the interview I gave to Legally India. I hope all of you will understand my need for privacy.

I thank everyone who have been sending me supportive messages. In times like this, words of wisdom from seniors and good luck messages from friends help a lot. I was particularly touched by the numerous messages which I received from girls who have been at the receiving end of sexual harassment themselves.

The Supreme Court has taken suo-moto cognizance, and appointed a judicial inquiry. We all should wait for the report before forming any opinion. Of course, the culprit must be punished, and let it be decided first, then the law would take appropriate action.

she needs privacy and protection. we must respect her privacy But if necessary we should speak for her right on our own forum. Treat this case as a starting point for reforms in Higher Judiciary. Administrative side and appointment process of higher judiciary is least transparent in our democracy. system of transparency and accountability in appointments in the The higher judiciary is much needed. Grievance redressal system against the Judges, being sexual harassment or corruptions or misbehavior or other conduct or otherwise is necessary . Quite a few Judges behaves like neo Czar/Neo Jamindars which is not acceptable in democracy but members of bar has no option but to suffer and gossip in corridors of Courts and vent their frustration outside the court.

I agree! At present, Indian judiciary is held captive of a coterie of senior judges and handful of senior counsels and this coterie has a strong tie-up with ruling class.

NUJS has been sending/ placing such internships with Supreme Court judges. It should be inquired whether Boys were also sent for such internships to a set of judges or only Girls were placed as interns with those particular judges. Chief Justice of Supreme Court is the Chancellor of NUJS. It should be seen how long this practice has been going and what was the role of earlier chief justice or VCs in the matter. Role of present VC, Registrar, Assistant Registrar etc must be looked into deeply. For the last few years NUJS has been in news for bad reasons. Several good teachers have left. A student committed suicide last year in campus. Queries of parents are not responded. Results are delayed. Weak students are not given special attention. Fees were enhanced all of a sudden and made applicable to existing/ ongoing batch also i.e. students admitted in earlier years too. Many universities revise fees only for prospective students.

Her blog states.. her own words state: For my supposed diligence, I was rewarded with sexual assault (not physically injurious, but nevertheless violating) from a man old enough to be my grandfather.

Nothing else is revealed. I think before we start crying FOUL...and nail people to the cross even before they are condemned to be crucified.... become all too moralistic, it would be better if the SC committee is given time and chance to uncover the truth whilst respecting the privacy of the person(s) involved.

Of course.. those who want to either "sensationalize" the issue or worse.. use this as a means to satisfy their " I EXIST TOO..." desires.. would not care any less and do whatever it is they do best.... bang the drum till it tears!
