SC again risks showing little subtlety in approach, slaps contempt notice on lawyer Nisha Priya Bhatia

Bhatia has long led a campaign, the facts of which are hard to substantiate, against a former RAW chief for sexual harassment, regularly alleging the complicity of a series of judicial members and many others.

The case may be reminiscent of when in 2015 the Supreme Court heavy-handedly sentenced lawyer Seema Sapra to one month jail for contempt.

The Indian Express reported:

Supreme Court initiates contempt proceedings against lawyer

THE SUPREME Court on Thursday initiated contempt proceedings against a woman lawyer who “made derogatory remarks against the court” and “dared” it to take action against her.

A bench of Justices A K Goel, [Rohinton] Fali Nariman and U U Lalit, which issued notice to lawyer Nisha Priya Bhatia, said “in our view, her conduct amounts to contempt in the face of the court”. But the bench “instead of straightway punishing her for contempt,” deemed it “appropriate to issue notice.”

The court asked her to file an affidavit “explaining her conduct within two weeks”.
