*Exclusive: Pravin Parekh has won the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) election, defeating former vice chairman Adish Aggarwala by a margin of only two votes, also leaving behind the incumbent Ram Jethmalani.

Supreme Court advocate Parekh, who has contested a number of SCBA elections and had a place on the committee several times since 2003, yesterday won the election with 757 votes.

Adish Agarwal, who was a previous vice chairman and supported the incumbent Jethmalani in last year’s elections, managed to gather 755 votes – only two fewer than the victor Parekh.

Jethmalani also finished behind Parekh by only a slim margin on 735 votes. Last year Jethmalani won the post by 367 votes after Raju Ramachandran had stepped up at the last minute for the post, as reported by Legally India in May 2010.

Rakesh Khanna won the post of vice-president and KC Kaushik won to become the SCBA’s new secretary.

Parekh was unavailable for comment at the time of going to press. Vishal Prasad, an advocate in Parekh’s chambers, confirmed the results to Legally India.

Congratulations to Mr. Parikh.Probably, it will be his fifth term as a President of SCBA.This victory is more notable and must be more sweeter for him as he has sailed through despite severe tides against him.During the Elections, several promises were made by three main Presidential candidates including him.Now that he has been elected as President, he should try not only to come up to the promises made by him to the SCBA members but also try to pick up and implement some of the genuine promises made by his opponents. Most importantly, he must make a conscious effort so that nobody gets an opportunity to point a finger(Whether right or wrong,as was during the elections) towards him.As he is among the most prominent Advocates in India and also since,he will be holding most coveted and highest position in most reverred bar Association in India, he would have greater responsibility to play the twin responsibilities well so as to act as the role model for others in the legal fraternity and also for the subordinate Bar Associations in India. In this context, he should know that CAESAR's WIFE SHOULD BE ABOVE ANY SUSPICION.Let's Hope and wish his fifth inning as Presidnet SCBA to be the brightest, worth emulating for others and most fulfilling for him.
Regards,

It is sad to note that lawyers with good networking skills are getting elected to the bar as opposed to lawyers with great lawyering skills. Several lawyers who filed their nominations were well known, not for their lawyering skills, but for organizing several conferences and other social events across the country. While networking is an acquired skill and is certainly important for all professionals in today's world, the determinative factor while electing the candidate for the post of a president should, in my view, be his/ her lawyering skills.
