Justice AK Ganguly resigned as West Bengal Human Rights Commission chairman today, reported IBN Live citing sources.

Ganguly reportedly met West Bengal governor MK Narayanan in Kolkata to submit his resignation.

Senior counsel and ex-attorney general Soli Sorabjee told The Hindu yesterday that Ganguly had told him that he was considering resigning, after the presidential reference to remove him was cleared by the Cabinet last week.

I'm a little confused by that argument - surely the resignation was Ganguly's own choice and he could just as well have chosen to clear his name before the presidential reference?

No one forced him to resign, and he seems to have been able to take the political and media pressure perfectly well until now...

I whole heartedly agree. Being a law student i always had the idea that in any criminal allegations, the accused is regarded as innocent until proven guilty. In the case of justice ganguly, such a principle seems to have been shown the door. It sets a dangerous precedent as any person aggrieved by the decision of a judge may bring about an allegation which would be supported by the trp hungry media and the scandalous gossip hungry common man.
