ELP moves to new Delhi office with twice the space (for 70)

Economic Laws Practice (ELP) has moved to a new office in New Delhi, near Connaught Place.

According to managing partner Rohan Shah, the new office was around 6,900 square feet in size, with a current headcount in the city of around 29 professionals, including 6 partners and associate partners.

The earlier office had a seating capacity of around 30 lawyers, while the new office space could house close to 70, according to Shah.

The new office is located at 801A, 8th Floor, Konnectus Tower on Bhavbuti Marg, opposite Ajmeri Gate Railway Station near Minto Bridge. The old office was around a kilometre to the South on Barakhamba Lane.

I am told by someone that their Mumbai office is also quite fancy!

They are well on their way to being a Tier I firm in another 5yrs maybe.

I'm not sure I agree with Virage, what you see at T1 firms like Khaitan, JSA, AZB in particular, is that they have multiple super stars. Rohan is the only real superstar at ELP, Delhi has no one to carry a office, while the among the other equity partners in Bombay, Rohit & Nishant seem to be developing in to very good lawyers but a distance away from being superstars....the remaining "founding partners" while successful & respected, aren't superstars in their respective fields...

Just a point, my definition of superstar - I mean generally regarded among the top 3 lawyers in a field, and a significant practice or "book" as many now say of 35cr++

JSA will not be the same again, we'll have to wait & see. So that 1 spot may be vacant in the next 4-5yrs.
And ELP is among the better Tier II firms to take their spot , what say?
Which are the other Tier II firms?

LOL - JSA is tier I. ELP is good but far from being a Tier I. and JSA still has Amit, Som, Dina, Farhad, Sumanto etc. Dream on - fancy furniture doth not a Tier I firm make~

I don't know if that's a criteria. Even among the Tier I firms, there are several good but not great lawyers. Most Indian law firms have one-three excellent partners and then those of tapering quality. It's about size and the ability to churn things out rather than an abundance of superstars. I'm not saying that ELP will be a tier I firm or not, just that tier I law firms aren't a smorgasbord of towering figures.

Also how does one decide whether someone is top 3 in a field? Most rankings are based on self reporting and some firms put more resources on that than others.

I agree with that. What I think Guest is trying to get at is that ELP is more heavily reliant one partner than most other firms you see a Rabindra etc at Khaitan or Sahay carrying Delhi in AZB or Som + Amit + Deena at JSA, even after Akshays exit.

Also, it's quite evident if you speak to people in the know in Indian law what partners practices are and what their pay packages are.....take Alshay joining SAM...:

Behold! Guest has spoketh! And who do you think you really are to pass such great judgments and sermons over people's careers which have spanned over 20-30 years! and how exactly do you know what are the books of the other founding partners! WHO ARE YOU, O SON OF ZEUS! Pray tell!

What about all those traders in surrounding areas like paharganj; sadar; daryaganj; Chandni Chowk etc? They are really filthy rich clients! Needless to mention the railway Sector itself is gearing up to emerge a potentially large billing opportunity!
