‘Brutal killing’, self-defence or tragic over-reaction in chaotic scuffle? Watch video of UP lawyer shot dead by cop that BCI is calling a strike over

Allahabad advocate Nabi Ahmad was allegedly shot dead by police sub-inspector Shailendra Singh on Wednesday, 11 March, resulting in local riots by enraged lawyers and a call by the Bar Council of India (BCI) for a national strike by lawyers, demanding the police officer’s arrest and Rs 50 lakh compensation by the state government to Ahmad’s family.

Singh has since been arrested and Uttar Pradesh state has initiated a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry.

The video appears to have been recorded by a bystander on a cameraphone and has been doing the rounds between lawyers on social media. The authenticity of the recording could not be verified.

The video, in which shakiness has been auto-corrected by software, appears to show a group of lawyers attacking Singh (in khaki) before Singh firing his weapon.

The footage seems to corroborate media reports that the officer was allegedly in a “heated argument with a group of lawyers”, after which the lawyers “allegedly threatened to thrash him”, followed by Singh allegedly firing his service weapon.

The BCI called it a “ghastly and brutal killing of a lawyer by the police officials in court premises”, calling for a national strike, Singh’s immediate arrest and the state government to pay Rs 50 lakh compensation to the family.

Kian, The 'next' and 'previous' arrow buttons of this page have disappeared for past some time on my screen... (both phone and laptop) as such I have to keep going back to my mailbox to go to the next/previous news item.
Can you please help me as to how to fix this?

This cop as I understand came to depose before the court. Why a person coming to depose should be armed be it a cop. Is it legally permitted.

As such, the cops of this country are rustic, brutal and mentally retarded, and do not understand the difference between right and wrong or where to draw the line. Most of the cops in India are class 8 pass (except for IPS) and failure as human beings (including IPS).

I believe unless the entire police system is scrapped and a new trained police battalion is formed, incidents of this nature will be repeated time and again. It is no point just wasting time, money and efforts in training the existing ones. Old habits die hard.

Fully agree except on IPS. IPS people also become educated goons carrying 8th fail brains, after going through training imparted by 8th pass inspectors! Also, if you scrap/disband the present force all these personnel will go back to their gangs!
