The Supreme Court yesterday declined to entertain three review petitions of its original 7 May 2014 judgment banning Jallikattu, reported The Hindu, only a week after the Supreme Court had ordered that the Centre’s restarting of Jallikattu was illegal and declined to vacate its order.

As reported by Legally India on 20 January, the bench of Justices V Gopala Gowda and Pinaki Chandra Ghose had allocated five minutes for the review hearing.

The uncertainty surrounding the Supreme Court’s extension of protection from arrest of social activist, Teesta Setalvad and her husband Javed Anand, will be cleared tomorrow, 14 October, as matter has been listed before justices Anil R Dave, Fakkir mohammed Ibrahim Kalifulla and V Gopala Gowda at 2 p.m. at Court 3. The bench will hear the matter till 2.55 p.m.

The India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO) has provided Supreme Court lawyers nearly 300 parking spaces across the road from the court complex to allay advocates’ parking troubles, after solicitor general Ranjit Kumar put the court-requested proposal to the Urban Development Ministry.

Justice V Gopala Gowda then dismissed a public interest litigation (PIL) from 2000 that in-part prayed for additional parking and a multi-level automatic car park for Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) members. SCBA president Dushyant Dave expressed gratitude” toward the bench, reported PTI.

The Supreme Court roster increased to 28 on 24 December after the swearing in of three new judges – former Madras high court chief justice MY Eqbal, former Karnataka high court chief justice Vikramjit Sen, and Orissa high court judge V Gopala Gowda.

62 years-old Sen who fills the Christian representation on the roster since former SC judge Cyriac Joseph’s retirement a year ago, will enjoy the shortest tenure out of the three.

Eqbal and Gowda, aged 61, will retire after a little over three and four years respectively. [The Hindu]

The recommendations for the three judges were made on 5 December.

Three high court chief justices - MY Eqbal from Madras, Vikramajit Sen from Karnataka and V Gopalagowda from the Orissa high court - will be elevated to the apex court soon, according to The Hindu.

Citing law ministry sources, the paper reported that the recommendations made on Wednesday’s would be notified within a fortnight.

The Hindu wrote:

Justice Eqbal (61), who hails from Jharkhand, will have a tenure of a little over three and half years; Justice Sen (62), who hails from Delhi, three years and Justice Gowda (61), who hails from Karnataka, a little over four years.
