Niche focus gifts start-up Sand Hill two PE education deal roles opposite AZB, JSA, Wadia Ghandy

Young private equity boutique Sand Hill Counsel has closed two private equity (PE) deals in the education sector for US-based venture capital firm Foundation Capital opposite AZB & Partners, J Sagar Associates (JSA) and Wadia Ghandy.

The firm led by partners Shantanu Surpure and Anand Kumar along with associates Nischal Reddy and Rashi Saraf acted  for clients Foundation Capital in the acquisition of a minority stake in an education services firm Aspire Human Capital for nearly Rs 20 crores.

JSA partner Lalit Kumar advised Aspire which provides training in communication skills and spoken English and will utilise the funds raised for further expansion in other cities.

On the other deal, Surpure and Kumar assisted by associates Nisha Mallik and Varun Shah helped Foundation Capital infuse fresh funding of Rs 40 crores in Mumbai based Tree House that runs elementary schools.

AZB partner Abhijit Joshi and associate Pooja Garg acted for existing investor Matrix Partners in this latest round of funding that totalled Rs 100 crores.

Tree House's promoters were represented by Wadia Ghandy.

"Since January 2010, the education sector in India witnessed Rs 624.75 crore investments across eight deals. Of these, six were in PE, while the rest were in VC stage," reported financial news portal VC Circle.

Both deals were completed earlier this month.
