NLU Delhi pushes AILET admissions exam all the way to 9 August, to ‘explore’ online proctored possibilities

NLU Delhi’s All India Law Entrance Test (AILET) has been postponed for the second time, now to be held on 9 August 2020, according to a notification on NLU Delhi’s website (see above).

The original exam date was 3 May 2020, which had initially been pushed to 31 May 2020.

That date is later than both the currently (very tentatively) scheduled 1-21 July dates of rival Common Law Admission Test (CLAT), which is used by all other national law schools and is currently slated to be a physical exam, as well as the private sector LSAT-India, which is currently targeting 19 July for its completely online proctored test.

AILET is still going for a physical exam, though intriguingly, the announcement noted that it might also go the LSAT route:

In case of any problem in conducting pen and paper examination, the University will also explore the possibilities of conducting online AI-ENABLED REMOTE-PROCTORED EXAMINATION. In such a case, the candidates will be informed well in advance.

Very good that NLUD is being practical and considering an online test. High time CLAT does the same. The students cannot suffer anymore. They will riot like in the US if this farce goes on.

NLUD and JGLS should have a joint entrance test. Both colleges are Delhi centric anyway.

And right there, with one fell sweep, NLUD proved that all the vaunted social justice research by its faculty comes to naught if they are even thinking of having an online national level entrance examination for a public university in India, which would basically exclude a sizable number of the candidates from contention at one go. Just setting up research centres and churning out white papers aren't enough, you need to practice what you preach. If this indeed comes to fruition and people like Anup, Mrinalini, Atul or Daniel do not protest against it, then my respect for them all would take a considerable hit.

p.s. Waiting for all the attacks including name-calling, especially amusing stuff like 'commie', 'bleeding heart' etc. and claims about how either students lacking access are just 'from village area' and wouldn't have cracked AILET anyway, or how 99.99% of all AILET aspirants already have an IBM PC located in their basements. Until I get at least a few of those, it's just not fun!

Hope you're aware of the demographic at NLUs my friend. Its just a bunch of insanely rich folk (so much for shitting on private colleges amiride?). Sure the demographic is a little more diverse, but not as much as commentators on this website seem to make it out to be.

Which is why the solution is to make the exam even more exclusive, instead of the other way around? Even if one student out of 1000 from a disadvantaged background makes it through an offline exam, I'd prefer that. Anyone who has actually been educated should do the same.

What nonsense logic is this? 1 in 1000 means 0.1 percent. So the remaining 99.9 percent will suffer?

What exactly are they suffering from? And the people responsible for such suffering are the elected government, for failing to make public university entrance exams accessible to the entire populace. So take it up with them. I would rather that one person gets in to law school than a hundred entitled brats. Would help the society more and give Menon's spirit peace.

@4.1.1.1: You are planning to crack CLAT with that logic and maths? He said 1 in a 1000 for every 1000 poor students who are appearing, genius. That's not 0.1% of all the CLAT aspirants! And these people claim that they crack law school exams on 'merit'! Sigh.

No one is name-calling but stating facts. CLAT and AILET are not exams for village citizens. They are in English and lead to law schools with fees that rural people cannot afford. Just because IDIA may have a few rural students does not mean the vast majority should suffer. Already the incoming first years are under stress. Their careers cannot be jeopardised any more.

Simply because nobody knows who are going to crack the exam. Afraid that the village people would take away your seat if you are forced to compete with them on equal level? Yeah, in theory. In practice, plenty of douches still graduate from law schools and remain exactly thus. I'd rather have people in who aren't already douches, and only needs to be taught law, not basic humanity.

No need of separate exam for NLU Delhi. AILET must be stopped now and made part of CLAT. After state reservation, only 24 seats for open category. Why students write this test for 24 seats???
