Jodhpur nabs MPL 3rd from NUJS after advancing to ICC, Commonwealth moot semis; Nalsar 7th

MPL 4: The home of Indian mooting
MPL 4: The home of Indian mooting

NLU Jodhpur displaced NUJS Kolkata in third place of the Herbert Smith Freehills-sponsored Mooting Premiere League (MPL) 4 by lodging semi-finalist scores in two Tier 2 World Class moots: the Commonwealth world rounds, and The Hague’s ICC Trial moot.

Nalsar Hyderabad climbed up to rung seven by also reaching the semi-finals of the ICC Trial moot, with a citation.

NLU J battles till semis at Hague, ICC

NLU Jodhpur docketed a total of 35 Tier 2 points by winning the overall second best speaker citation at the Commonwealth world rounds where it faced Oxford Brooks University in the semi-finals.

The college also reached the semi-final rounds at the ICC Trial moot in The Hague.

At Commonwealth, NLU Jodhpur was represented by overall second best speaker Shikhar Saha, speaker Thomas Vallianeth, and researcher Garima Shahani.

Saha, who particularly savoured being judged by commonwealth judicial officers such as chief justices of Trinidad & Tobago and Falkland among others, said: “The one thing that [emerged from the experience] is that advocacy skills [are] something we need to focus on more. In Indian moots […] our focus is more on law which is okay but we don’t focus enough on advocacy.”

At the ICC Trial, the Jodhpur team comprised of Namrata Amarnath, Ishita Das, Varun Natarajan, Lakshana CV and Mohit Maheshwari. The team could not be reached at the time of going to press as they are touring Europe.

Nalsar Hague semis

Nalsar’s Ishita Bhardwaj, Arushi Garg, Swati, and Shuchita qualified for the Hague, which selects two law schools from each interested country based on 2000-page written submissions. In addition to reaching the top nine of the 38-participant-strong criminal law moot, they also won the overall best defence citation.

Nalsar was knocked out by Osgood University Canada in the semi-finals.

Bhardwaj, who was the team’s “counsel for the victim”, said: “It is a policy based moot. We have to not only research the law but also give suggestions on how the court should decide and on any new trends […] there isn’t any settled law one way or another, and the entire point of this moot is to suggest policy […]”.

Garg, who was the team’s counsel for the prosecutor, won the Rhodes scholarship in November and plans to practice international criminal law after a BCL, MPhil and DPhil at the Oxford University, as reported by Legally India.

With 20 points from this feat, Nalsar has left behind HNLU Raipur and RMLNLU Lucknow on the MPL 4 table in seventh place.
