An NLU Jodhpur team comprising of speakers Pranjal Mehta, Ashwin Mishra and researcher Naseeruddin defeated a team from Northumbria University, Newcastle, UK at the 2013 edition of the KK Luthra Memorial Criminal Law Moot last weekend.
NLU J has now consolidated its position in 3d place in the Mooting Premier League (MPL) 4 sponsored by Herbert Smith Freehills
This year’s competition saw the participation of 60 teams, both national and international and was held at Campus Law Centre, New Delhi on Sunday 20 January 2013.
The best memo was won by a team from HNLU Raipur consisting of Apoorva Neral, Kamini Jaiswal and Peeyuse Prakhar.
Akansha Mahapatra of NUJS Kolkata won the best speaker award.
Both universities have added 8 points each to their tally: HNLU has now reached fourth place of the MPL table with 57 points, but only a single point separates it from NUJS in fifth place with 56 points.
The runner-up team from Northumbria consisted of Benjamin Crystal, Matthew Windle and Natalie Bernal. The other semi-finalists were from NLSIU Bangalore and Campus Law Centre Delhi, who were fighting on home turf.
MPL 4 Quicklinks:
Campus Law Centre has now opened its account in the MPL at 33rd place with 4 points. NLSIU also earned 4 points to take its total to 157 and has retained its place at the top of the table.
Pranjal Mehta, one of the team members from the winning team told Legally India: “It was a very rewarding experience. We had to face 60 teams. When we faced Northumbria University, it was the first time we were opposite an international team.”
She also praised the quality and versatility of the judges at the competition, “Each bench had something different to offer, and had its own quality.”
Practicing advocates acted as judges for the prelims and quarters, senior advocates for the semi-finals and three sitting judges of the Delhi High Court comprised the bench for the Finals.
When asked about the quality of the other teams, she said: “In a holistic sense , our most challenging opponents were NALSAR and Campus Law Centre, it was a close call with both in terms of research and speaking skills.”
In other mooting news, NLSIU liveblogged the NLS–TIOL Tax Moot here. Team MPL is considering including it in the next edition of the MPL. This year’s winner was HNLU Raipur and the runner-up was NLU Delhi.
Note: The previous table contained some errors in addition. We’ve corrected the figures and our spreadsheet to avoid such errors in future. Apologies for any inconvenience caused.
International law firm Herbert Smith is sponsoring the Mooting Premier League (MPL) and will contribute a prize pool of Rs 60,000 for the top three winning colleges.

NLSIU doesnt seem its team A to moots like these. To some extent its good because it opens the competition for law schools like NLU-J to have some awards in their cupboard!
It appears NLSIU has only one A-Team which they send to Man Lachs. If we remove those 100 points, they'll go to 5th rank.
Oh Boy! Is this that a mistake of other law schools?
Time to shade your arrogance 'school'.
NLSIU doesn't seem??
That was obviously a typo! IDIOT!
The full list of moots included in MPL is published here:
www.legallyindia.com/wiki/MPL_4_rulebook
This is substantially the same as in MPL 3.
Amity International had a good start this year and is pegged for inclusion next year, as is NLS Tax.
Sathe has not been part of MPL since season 2, when the organisers said they did not want to participate in the MPL. If that has changed, we would welcome the organisers to get in touch.
Chagla and Tulsi are also not a part of the MPL at present. If you think they should be included, please do make a case for it in the comments or send us an email at explaining in detail why it should be incorporated.
But please avoid comments simply saying, "Please include Eminent Jurist Memorial Moot because it is awesome", because that doesn't really give us much to go on and those points have been made a fair number of times (in some cases, by just one person trying to push their own moot into the MPL).
We've got a mailing list which goes to MCCs of top MPL colleges asking them for inclusion of various moots, which has yielded useful feedback about not including certain moots, but if you have any ideas for other fair ways of deciding on the inclusion of a moot in the MPL, we would certainly welcome suggestions.
Many thanks and best wishes,
Kian
If NLS-Tax moot and Amity Int'l moot are poised to be included from the next season of MPL because of great public support and considering the level of competition, then atleast mention the declare the results of the moots that were conducted this season. I recommend the views of 3.1 Clarity. You should atleast declare their results as you did for NLS-Tax this time.
