NLSIU Bangalore has wrested back the top spot in the Mooting Premier League (MPL) after beating rival Nalsar Hyderabad at the Philip C. Jessup South India rounds.
The finals of the competition witnessed the top two teams of the MPL slugging it out against each other at the competition organised by the University of Madras from 29 to 31 January 2010.
The NLSIU Bangalore team of Raag Yadava, V.Niranjan, Gautam Bhatia and Subhana Nair ultimately defeated the Nalsar Hyderebad team of Shatadru Chakraborthy, Dhananjaya Mishra, Ashish Pareek and Brajendru Bhaskar in the finals.
The team from NUALS Kochi bagged the best memorial and climbed to 12th position in the MPL table.
NLSIU's win for 10 points in the MPL and Nalsar's runner-up score of 7 points would have meant that the two teams were tied for first place.
However, NLSIU veteran mooter V. Niranjan broke the tie after winning the best orator award, thus giving NLSIU 7 valuable points and re-gifting it the pole position. Niranjan was also awarded best speaker in the finals.
Both NLSIU and Nalsar have now qualified for the world finals of Jessup that will be held in Washington D.C. from 21 to 27 March 2010.
They will be accompanied by the teams from NLU, Jodhpur and LC-1, Delhi University who have qualified from the Jessups North India rounds.
NLS points gain of 17 from Jessups South means the law school now again leads the MPL rankings with 73 points.
Nalsar Hyderabad is now 7 points behind with 66 points, having won the top spot for the first time in mid-January after its KK Luthra win.
Nalsar's Ashish Pareek said: "Jessup is just an exciting competition and no other competition even comes close. It was amazing to work on the Jessup problem this year which, of course, was factually complex and demanded a grasp on the fundamental concepts of the subjects involved."
"Although, we could not win the Jessup Nationals, we hope that we would better our performance in the World Rounds," he said, adding that he would hope to level the scores with NLSIU at the Jessup World Rounds.
NLU Jodhpur is a distant third with 37 points, with NLIU Bhopal hot on its heels with 34.
The battle for the pole position continues this weekend where NLSIU and Nalsar will be battling for the top honours at GIMC organised by GNLU Gandhinagar.

number one . . .
@6: unfortunately we have also decided not to include GLC, Thrisshur moots for this season. However, congrats to NLS for winning that too.
@7 : rahul Gulati from BVP, Pune did not win the 2nd best advocate. It was won by NLS only. However, BVP, Pune was adjudged as the 3rd best team and congrats for the performance.
@8: we also hope that the world cup comes back to India again this year.
Good luck to all the teams.
Its kind of late, but as the saying goes better late than never. So, kindly check and confirm if NLIU, Bhopal won the best memo at BR Sawhney Moot, because during the presentation ceremony it was NLU, Jodhpur whose name was announced for the same.
Thanks
you seriously think performance in moots tell how good or bad a law college is.
Just to give you an example...a magic circle law firm has an essay contest running for the past 2 years...only students for NLSIU, NUJS, NALSAR and NLUJ can take it. :P
And one bad year doesn't make NUJS bad at mooting.
It has seen a meteoretic rise the past couple of years. Renowned foreign univs want tieups to such an extent that the people are having a tough time choosing which univs to include. Even LST and Halsbury don't rank NLS/NUJS/NALSAR. All 3 are recognised as tier one instis.
Regarding placements LI has done enough of coverage. I don't need to speak anything more.
@ Legally Blonde: Get your facts right man before making loose statements.
Nalsar , nlsiu are the only colgs which compete with us.
any idea who won the GIMC moot?
[It was Washington and no major change at the top of the rankings - we will publish an update soon. -Kian]
I think you people have made a mistake with the Best Memorial Award of the BR Sawhney Moot. It was NLU Jodhpur that won the best memo. Please clarify and confirm.
[Thanks - we are just double-checking with the convenors. -Kian]
@18-i was going to make the same reply as no. 20 has given. To add to the 'facts' I think the recent MCS Embezzlement controversy( members of the Moot Court Society embezzled considerable amounts of funds into their personal accounts, convenor gets funds to the tune of 25G sanctioned fr going to Lucknow from kolkatta) proves my point more than enough. Some members of the very same MCS actually overlap to the esteemed journal u referred 2 in ur post. SO I rest my case.
On another point, mooting DOESN'T measure the credit worthiness of a college solely. But what else are u looking at?
Placements--frankly dependent on the type of student, if you are outta top 20 AMSS wont even look @ u twice, even at NUJS.
Debates-havent heard of any(pls make a point if u ppl know).
Faculty- The less said the better, the ongoing examination system controversy can be evidence of that.
