NUJS Kolkata has won the ELSA Moot Court Competition on WTO law in the Dominican Republic last Sunday (30 May) beating GNLU Ghandinagar in the semi-finals and topping 14 other international teams, according to the winning team.
The NUJS final round team consisted of team captain Sneha Janakiraman, Vallishree Chandra, while Shan Kohli also participated in the final round as the team's researcher, having had visa difficulties and being unable to accompany the team. Medha Marathe was the team coach and Trisha Singhvi the junior researcher.
Janakiraman told Legally India: "We met GNLU in one semi-finals and the Canadian team faced the Australian in the second semi-final. We beat GNLU in the semi-finals and the Canadian team beat the Australian in the second semi-finals."
The four teams with the highest scores after the two preliminary rounds made the cut to the semi-finals, she explained, where the Australian team was ranked first, GNLU second, NUJS third and the Canadian team was fourth.
But she added that under ELSA rules if two teams from the same region qualified for the knock-out rounds of the last four, they would have to face off in the semi-finals, which is where NUJS met GNLU.
"We met a team from Geneva and Netherlands in the preliminary rounds and top four make it to the semi finals," said Janakiraman.
The grand final was between NUJS and the Canadian team […], which she noted that NUJS won.
This story is an early confirmation of the win and as the points of this Tier 2 competition will not be tallied into the Mooting Premier League (MPL) sponsored by Clifford Chance until we get sufficient confirmation from the convenors or third parties, as we do in other cases in the MPL.
Due to the competition having taken place in the Dominican Republic and campus holidays, it has been impossible for us to get in touch with any second sources to confirm this information at present. However, we will do so ASAP and tabulate the final ranking in the competition. We are also still confirming two further honourable mentions at the Space Moot and will publish this.
The MPL is sponsored by Clifford Chance and the top eight ranked law colleges will share a generous prize fund of Rs 1.5 lakhs provided by the firm.
Indian world glory: NUJS wins ELSA WTO moot in Dominican Republic; GNLU to semis

Missing from Legally India since rumours started flying that NUJS had won ELSA world finals.
Anyone with information as to the whereabouts of this person, please inform Legally India, NUJS, the nearest police station or the nearest mental asylum.
and also thanks goes to the faculty we hv at present. i think it can be argued that we hv the best or one of the best faculties among the national law schools and the credit for tht goes to our VC..
"This has nothing to do with the faculty of NUJS - it is purely because of students and their effort that NUJS has done well at this competition. It would be incorrect to attribute the victory to any other source whatsoever, least of all to the faculty. "
True. The faculty in NLS/NALSAR/NUJS and all other places are rubbish. Even my friends in IIT and IIM complain about how bad their faculty is. The plain fact is that all the leading Indian colleges do well only because the students are bright.
The faculty is not rubbish. At NUJS, actually, its pretty kickass. The VC is luring in good teachers and showing the door to bad ones...
Wat 19 meant to say (I suppose) was that their role in Moots is close to nil... It's quite sad really... Considering the kind of assistance/guidance students of foreign universities get from their faculty....
For the infrastructure and inputs in terms of funding and othethat GNLU students get I am very impressed by their achievements. The students representing their university abroad have had no support from the University over the years and getting sponsorship is always a major hassle being in Gujarat. For them to go first to Taiwan and subsequently to Dominican Republic costs a bomb. Congratulations to them too.
and finally - yes faculty might not be directly involved in coaching students for moots - but then faculty members do play a role thorugh their quality teaching and research to generate the interest of students in subjects.
[The details should be published in a day - the convenors are currently travelling back from the Dominican Republic and were unavailable. They have promised to be in touch soon. -Ed]
Real proud, guys!
And good going GNLU :-)

A far more important indicator (and this is the norm in the US and UK) is the reputation enjoyed by the law school journal. This shows not merely the quality of legal research, but also the ability to analyze legal issues and draw conclusions. The same contributes towards legal literature which is the very basis of law.
Seen in this light, the law journal of NUJS - NUJS Law Review- enjoys international reputation and is considered the best Indian law journal (by some distance). See for example lawlib.wlu.edu/LJ, ranking by Washington University School of Law. This is another feather in the already well adorned NUJS cap.
But I think, ranking of law schools (if there is any point in such ranking) should be done by considering all relevant factors including the journals, mooting, faculty, placements, etc. The analogy with SRCC and debating is flawed. Debating does not necessarily teach skills essential specifically to students in any particular field. So the quality of SRCC as a commerce college cannot be judged on it. However, mooting is very much a part of legal training.
We are the crazed mavericks of the law school world!
Just in... These are the latest Jessup memorial results!
