Sex harass charges by 1st year student against Jharkhand national law school ass’t registrar spark internal & BCI inquiry

NUSRL Ranchi’s assistant registrar was suspended from his position after a first year student of the law school filed a complaint of sexual harassment against him.

Two committees have been set up to inquire into the complaint against the assistant registrar Dr Narendra Narottam, who was the university’s registrar-in-charge when the complaint was made.

NUSRL’s public relations officer SK Sinha told Legally India that a committee comprising of five faculty members of the law school was formed 20 days ago and that its report was awaited to decide on the action to be taken against the assistant registrar. Sinha said that the law school was on vacation until 2 February and that there was no decision from NUSRL vice chancellor BC Nirmal on whether or not the accused would resume his duties from 2 February.

Nirmal said: “As far as I understand the committee had already submitted its report to the chancellor but I am not in town so I do not know the complete facts or anything further.”

Jharkhand state bar council chairman Rajiv Ranjan, who is heading the second enquiry committee to look into complaint, told Legally India that this committee was formed by the Bar Council of India (BCI) and consists of BCI members Nilesh Kumar and Anil Kumar, other than Ranjan. Ranjan said that the BCI committee was yet to visit the NUSRL campus and begin the inquiry, but the law school’s internal inquiry committee had already submitted its report to the chancellor around 15 days ago.

An NUSRL source with knowledge of the matter told Legally India that following the internal enquiry committee report Jharkhand high court chief justice and NUSRL chancellor R Banumathi had “debarred” the assistant registrar from resuming his duties at the university.

Narottam was not reachable for comment on his phone number.
