NUJS staffer files FIR over colleague’s acid attack threat & sex harassment, after admin inaction

The NUJS Kolkata employee’s internal sexual harassment complaint against another staffer has become a criminal matter, after she filed a First Information Report (FIR) with the police alleging sexual harassment, physical assault and criminal intimidation by threatening to attack her with acid.

The Times of India reported on Saturday that the victim alleged in her complaint: “The accused tried to foster personal interaction with me despite a clear indication of disinterest on my part. He regularly spied on me, even when I was at home. He tracked my movements, both inside and outside the college. I have sufficient evidence to substantiate my claims.

“He made physical contact and advances that involved explicit sexual overtures. He used to gesticulate to show me signs of sexual intercourse. I resisted vehemently and on one occasion, I even threw a paper weight at him to escape his physical overtures. He kept on telling me that ‘he has fallen in love with me’ and won’t stop unless I went to bed with him.”

She also alleged that he had threatened to physically attack her with acid unless she “bedded with him”, allegedly showing her a bottle that he claimed contained acid, and showing her a picture of an acid attack victim.

While the other accused member of staff was currently on leave on medical grounds, the inquiry into the matter had been put on hold on 19 July, as reported by Legally India at the time.

The TOI reported that the victim wrote: “I fear that on his return from leave on August 2, he will make an attempt to throw acid on me and cause permanent damage and deformity to my face.”

Why is my dear college becoming a ground for sleaze? Reading the news these days, sometimes I wonder if this is place where I spent the best 5 years of my life.... Very disappointed, hurt and sad.

I appeal to the administration to please clean up the muck and restore its name as an institution of excellence. When you judge a college, not only its academic credentials matters, but also the atmosphere that it throws out to the fresher that matters.

The way things are turning out in NUJS, I am not sure, if now as a student I would aspire to be part of this.

What's with the disappointment about a sexual harassment case? Criminal behaviour is so normal, expected. It is unworthy of you to disown your alma mater on account of such claims when such incidents are rampant in India. Would you disown India as well and settle abroad, in some other planet?

It was always a college of sleaze.. Right from day 1 , year 1... but we have no disowned it, have we.. Just that, in the days of yore, even the sleaze was civilized.. the present crew are just irritants who should be dealt with appropriately..

Though it is the right of the employee to file a complaint with the police, in this case I guess she was pushed to file this complaint

The University seems to have put the complaint on hold till a distant future date. To utter dismay of many the committee formed to look into the complaint sanctioning leave (as per the news in legally India) to the accused on medical grounds.

One member of faculty who is openly supporting the accused and declared that she will go to any length to see that the accused is restored to position, spending hours on end at VC's chamber

The accused to join back soon and with his clout and influence with VC thwart the process further

A self-proclaimed gender sensitive member of faculty who is also a member of the committee negotiating for the accused

What else was left to the complainant to protect her rights and dignity

I am glad she filed the FIR, which is what she should have done in the first place. Women should file FIRs rather than leave it to "internal committees" which mostly do no good. If the allegations are true, the man must be jailed.

She did the right thing. Threat of acid attack is a matter for the police. If she is found out to be lying that is another thing, but she seems to have the evidence. Why is this dude acting like weird creepy Ranjhanaa style stalker?

Bravo well done the victim staff of NUJS ......... we are all with you........

All mis deeds of the accused will be brought to the public forum...........

Where is the accused now?

Some NUJS Faculty are trying to shield the accused...... What a sorry state of affair in NUJS......
What is the interest of those Fcaulties (some) to sheild the accussed? Are they afraid that some of their story will leaked by teh accussed ?

What Prof. Bhatt , GC , EC and AC are doing ? Don't they have any moral responsibility ?

Do they want the public to come to NUJS ?
