NUJS Kolkata’s administration implied that the death of Wasim Iqbal, an NUJS fourth-year student who fell from the terrace of the hostel last week (13 August), was not a suicide, contrary to “unsubstantiated and factually incorrect news reports”.
The college stated in its press release, which was prepared on Saturday:
It has been noticed that there are various unsubstantiated and factually incorrect news reports in print and internet media where the incident has been reported as a case of suicide. Mr. Iqbal has been portrayed as a student of questionable health who could not cope with the academic requirements of the university. On the contrary, the university would like to state that Mr. Iqbal was a student with the calibre to cope with the regular rigours of academic and extra-curricular activities.
Legally India had reported on 14 August that Iqbal’s death was “presumed to have been a suicide”, with several authoritative campus sources confirming that Iqbal had suffered from psychological issues and had failed several repeat exams, despite being a “super bright” student.
A number of other newspapers and publications reported at the time that Wasim’s death was a suicide.
The release adds that the local police, after carrying out investigation into the incident, “concluded that it was a case of Unnatural Death”, resulting from the injuries sustained by the fall, according to a post mortem.
“The University would like to reiterate the same and all contradictory statements and reports, previous and in future are to be disregarded,” concluded the release.
Unnatural death includes death caused intentionally, such as murder or suicide, as well as unintentional death, such as by accident.

First of all it was the Registrar who said he could not cope. Secondly, prima facie this appears to be a case of suicide. If it turns out that the press release is a cover-up job then the VC should be sacked at once.
This was written on his public Facebook profile.
Thankfully the NUJS faculty/students (try as they may) cannot choose to conveniently rewrite history when it comes to an event happening in their campus.
It is pretty rich to blame the administration for EVERYTHING. What were his batchmates doing? Were they too worried about their moots, grades and jobs to see that one of their friends was suffering? Shame!
And why the hell would any sane person leave the terrace open to a bunch of nincompoops who could be potentially high on drugs and alcohol?
Introspect! Instead of pointing fingers at everyone.
