Former and current NLU Delhi students have reportedly approached the Delhi high court against the 50% state reservation, which we had first reported in January.
LiveLaw had just tweeted the news earlier today.
NLU Delhi alumni & students have moved the Delhi HC, in a bid to challenge the domicile reservation instituted by the Delhi Govt. which calls for 50% reservation of seats in the University for students residing in Delhi. The matter is listed on June 11...
A similar petition had been recently filed by NLUD LL.M candidate Pia Singh which sought for the quashing of the provision giving 50% reservation to those students who had appeared in their qualifying exam from Delhi. Notice had been issued in the plea.

We just live next to its stories passed down by batches. Apparently people fished in it once!
1) This petition has officially been filed by students and alumni and has everyone's full support.
2) The petition is filed on 6 grounds.
3) Ground 1 is that NLUD is ranked as the #2 law school in India and has students from all over India. Domicile reservation will deprive meritorious students from other states in India.
4) Ground 2 is that the percentage of reservation is too high.
5) Ground 3 is that since domicile reservation is restricted to Delhi, it will favour the rich and hurt diversity. Delhi is a fully urban area where incomes levels are higher than elsewhere. So it discriminates against the poor. This is unlike NUJS or NLUO, which are situated in states with large rural pockets and reservation is not confined to urban areas.
5) Ground 4 is that NLUD was set up an an institution of national character on a similar basis as NLSIU. The NLSIU reservation has not been approved by the Chief Justice of India. A letter by NLSIU alumni has been given to the CJI expressing concerns. Thus, at the very least, we should wait for NLSIU to implement the reservation and then apply it to NLUD.
6) Ground 5, continuing from Ground 4, is that a new Vice Chancellor has been nominated and an outgoing administration should not take such decisions. Thus, let us first wait for NLSIU to go ahead and for the new VC to be appointed.
7) Ground 6 is regarding the procedure followed to implement the reservation. It is submitted that a wide-ranging prior consultation should have been held, as well as legislative discussion.
