JGLS ties up with Delhi Daredevils for sports law guest lectures & more

JGLS Sonepat students will now have sports law guest lectures by cricket team Delhi Daredevils (DD) as part of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that DD signed with the law school’s Centre for India Australia Studies (CIAS).

DD - one of the teams part of the seasonal cricket event the Indian Premiere League - signed the MoU at Delhi’s Feroz Shah Kotla cricket stadium with Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting as a guest at the event, to “actively participate and contribute in educating students and academics about sports law and governance issues that arise in one of the biggest sporting leagues in the world – the IPL”, according to JGLS’ press release.

The release states:

DD will assist by providing guest lectures for programmes run by the CIAS and facilitate tours and site visits to its facilities. In addition, DD will encourage interactions with team management and players as it is hoped that this will catalyse a more practical insight into the business and governance of sports from the perspective of a leading IPL franchise.

The MoU is presided over by the Australian high commissioner to India Harinder Sidhu who commented in the release: “India and Australia share a longstanding relationship and have been constantly working together in sports, a field that is a natural fit between our two countries. This MoU will offer an opportunity to further expand sports partnership beyond the cricket field – allowing academics and students to work in this emerging area of collaboration. I hope that this partnership between Delhi Daredevils, the Centre for India Australia Studies and Jindal Global University will act as a stepping stone to help build stronger sporting ties between our nations.”

JGU vice chancellor Prof C Raj Kumar added in the release: “The MoU will provide insights into practical experiences of the sporting world to our university students. This is a significant step forward in building on the existing Sports Law and Governance course which we have at JGU. This will also help build and strengthen awareness and opportunity of key challenges and opportunities in the field of sport. The practice of sports law and governance is global, and while DD’s insights will I’m sure be invaluable, it is important that we also consider other sports and other jurisdictions when teaching our students about this area of law.”

DD chief executive officer Hemant Dua commented: “We are happy to partner and work with O.P. Jindal Global University and the Centre for India Australia Studies on closely understanding sports law and governance. As part of the partnership DD is to provide insights, guidance and hands-on experience of working with a Cricket franchise to promising lawyers. I am certain that this will be a great exchange programme which will lead to greater sharing of knowledge.”
