GNLU Gandhinagar is again in the Gujarat high court, this time as three administrative staff members have alleged that GNLU director Bimal Patel made illegal appointments at the law school.
We understand from sources close to the litigation that the dispute is regarding Patel having advertised for new posts instead of converting the petitioners’ existing contractual appointments to permanent appointments.
Swaminadhan, who is one of the petitioners in the case, declined to comment at the time of going to press.
Gujarat high court justice JB Pardiwala passed an order in favour of the petitioners on 18 April, stating that “the petitioners have been able to make out a strong prima facie case to have an interim order”.
The next date of hearing in the case is 7 July.
An independent inquiry at GNLU was ordered by the Gujarat HC this month, into alleged cheating by student Brahmbatt, after a single-judge bench of the same high court had overturned the law school's earlier investigation into the matter terming it malafide, unreasonable and illegal, and had observed in his order that Patel had turned GNLU into an oligarchy violating human rights.
Patel did not respond to Legally India's emailed request for comment since yesterday. In fact Patel did not respond to a single request for comment from us on any of the stories we reported recently on Brahmbatt's battle against GNLU, but he sent an internal email to GNLU's faculty on 23 June, alleging the existence of "defamatory news" on the oligarchy case.

1. Re GNLU: We follow where the stories are. Right now, the stories we are getting are at GNLU. If a high court makes a decision on GNLU, or some staff members sue the institution, then that's a story, and is not our fault in any way.
2. Covering negative stories is to a large extent, our job. Avoding writing about negative stories because it upsets some alumni or staff or VC would be wrong.
THis act of his has his evil intentions exposed. The guy intitally harassed the god permanent faculties to leave. And now hes hiring guys on contractrual basis to keep a sword dangling above their necks so that they make no decision against his will and nor do they raise their voices. To make the contractual emplyees viraully his servants, he also is trying to hijack the Executive Committee. As a matter of fact, to make faculties independent, it is highly imperative that Conractual appointment be banned atleast for teaching posts, and posts which are directly involved in management of students.
